Yes indeed, but you saw much more than a prophet. For John is the one of whom the scripture says: ‘God said, I will send my Messenger ahead of you to open the way for you.’ I assure you that John the Baptist Is greater than any man who has ever lived. But he who is least in the Kingdom of heaven is greater than John. From the time John preached his message until this very day the Kingdom of heaven has suffered violent attacks, and violent men try to seize it. Until the time of John all the prophets and the Law of Moses spoke about the Kingdom; and if you are willing to believe their message, John is Elijah, whose coming was predicted. Listen, then, if you have ears! "Now, to what can I compare the people of this day? They are like children sitting in the market-place. One group shouts to the other, 'We played wedding music to the you, but you would not dance! We sang funeral songs, but you wouldn't cry!' When John came, he fasted & drank no wine, & everyone said, 'He has a demon in him!' When the Son of Man came, he ate & drank, & everyone said, 'Look at this man! Jesus and Abraham
They asked Jesus, “Were we not right in saying that you are a Samaritan and have a demon in you?”
“I have no demon,” Jesus answered. “I honour my Father, but you dishonour me. I am not seeking honour for myself. But there is one who seeking it and who Judges in my favour. I am telling you the truth: whoever obeys my teaching will never die.”
They said to him, “Now we are certain that you have a demon! Abraham died, and the prophets died, yet you say that whoever obeys your teaching will never die. Our father Abraham died; you do not claim to be greater than Abraham, do you? And the prophets also died. Who do you think you are?”
Jesus answered, “If I were to honour myself, that honour would be worth nothing. The one who Honours me is my Father- the very one you say is your God. You have never known him, but I know him. If I were to say that I do not know him, I would be a liar like you. But I do know him, and I obey his word. Your father Abraham rejoiced that he was to see the time of my coming; he saw it and was glad.”
They said to him, “You are not even fifty years old - and you have seen Abraham?”
“I am telling you the truth,” Jesus replied. “Before Abraham was born, ‘I Am’.”
Then they picked up stones to throw at him, but Jesus hid himself and left the Temple.
Matthew 11:1-19
The Messengers from John the Baptist
When Jesus finished giving these instructions to his twelve disciples, he left that place and went off to teach and preach in the town near there.
When John the Baptist heard in prison about the things that Christ was doing, he sent some of his disciples to him. “Tell us,” they asked Jesus, “are you the one John said was going to come, or should we expect someone else? “
Jesus answered, “Go back and tell John what you are hearing and seeing: the blind can see, the lame can walk, those who suffer from dreaded skin-diseases are made clean, the deal hear, the dead are brought back to life, and the Good News is preached to the poor. How happy are those who have no doubts about me!”
While John’s disciples were leaving, Jesus spoke about him to the crowds: “When you went out to John in the desert, what did you expect to see? A blade of grass bending in the wind? What did you go out to see? A man dressed up in fancy clothes? People who dress like that live in palace! Tell me, what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes indeed, but you saw much more than a prophet. For John is the one of whom the scripture says: ‘God said, I will send my Messenger ahead of you to open the way for you.’ I assure you that John the Baptist Is greater than any man who has ever lived. But he who is least in the Kingdom of heaven is greater than John. From the time John preached his message until this very day the Kingdom of heaven has suffered violent attacks, and violent men try to seize it. Until the time of John all the prophets and the Law of Moses spoke about the Kingdom; and if you are willing to believe their message, John is Elijah, whose coming was predicted. Listen, then, if you have ears!
"Now, to what can I compare the people of this day? They are like children sitting in the market-place. One group shouts to the other, 'We played wedding music to the you, but you would not dance! We sang funeral songs, but you wouldn't cry!' When John came, he fasted & drank no wine, & everyone said, 'He has a demon in him!' When the Son of Man came, he ate & drank, & everyone said, 'Look at this man! He is a glutton & a drinker, a friend of tax collectors & other outcasts!' God's wisdom, however, is shown to be true by its results."
