Subtext has a tone of plausible deniability and places the burden entirely on the viewer (i.e. we didn't write it/I didn't play it that way, that's how YOU interpreted it)... So my point still stands, we have no way of knowing if Jensen Ackles is comfortable playing a gay/bisexual character coz he's. Never. Played. One. Before.

I personally feel that they are more like brothers in a sense and that the "love" is simply a family like bond that's been created. I have nothing against gay people but I personally don't ship any of the boys with each other.

just like he said "I need you" which is (in my opinion) basically the same thing xD

Actually it's confirmed by the writers that it was in the script, Misha wasn't joking. Jensen didn't think that Dean would ever openly say I love you to anyone so they changed it to either "I need you" or "we are family" I can't remember which.
It was in the scene where cas was being controlled by one of the top angels and they were trying to make cas take away the tablet with the word of God on it and cas was beating dean to death and dean said something along the lines of "cas, please, I need you, we are family." To snap cas out of it. In the script it original had him saying I love you but Jensen changed it at the right moment because he thought that it was or of character for dean but I think it was just because Jensen was uncomfortable saying it to a man.
