Mercedes 116 gear shifter bushings

  • If there is 'slop' in the automatic gear shifter bushings, or your car wont start, the bushings could be badly worn on your 40 year old Mercedes! The gear shifter influences what's called the neutral safety switch so it may even explain why your car wont start. The parts to do this job are only about 15-20 dollars, and it takes about 90 minutes for all. Doing the one lower bushing is ideally done on a hoist, although it may be easier on smaller edge cars (compared to the 6.9 where there is little room). You would also benefit from the tool seen in the, video, I bought this off eBay.

I love Aussie videos. Well done and I could feel your relief when it fired up first time. Give your (now) 8yo some Roblox time as payment!

G’day. Many thanks for the video. Just did this for my slc 450, all the bushings were gone and I wasn’t aware that there were bushing holding the spring in. All I had was lots of white powder, for a second I thought the car had been owned by a Colombian cartel! But all it was was disintegrated bushings. Thanks again, keep enjoying the 6.9 and be well.

A cheap but rewarding job Marcus and you describe the disintegrated ones to a tea!

I forgot, re the washer and c clip. They way you did it makes perfect sense, washer protects bushing from C clip. However, for the life of me, I could not get the c clip back on with the washer so I put the washer in as per the MB manual. Makes no sense as the washer just floats about but short of cutting the bushing I could not get the c clip to clip on. And the bushing are MB parts not Febi etc. Thanks again and take care. @@w116036

Excellent video, thanks. A certain mercedes expert recommends finding a scrap shifter for the first set of bushings you installed, lol.

It's really pretty easy bunga and cheap. Takes less than an hour and it's awesome when done, such a difference!

Great video! Appreciate the thoroughness. And the sturdy clicks between the gears in the end were quite satisfying!
