- The U.S. agreed on Monday to return 30 looted antiquities to Cambodia, including statues of Buddhist and Hindi deities carved more than 1,000 years ago. The items, which were stolen during civil conflicts between the 1960s and 1990s and sold to Westerners using fake documents, were voluntarily relinquished by U.S. museums and private collectors.

This is the right thing to do. These gorgeous artifacts belong to the people of Cambodia. To art lover's they are beautiful art pieces to be treasured, to the people of Cambodia they are sacred and holy. We appreciate that fact. Runs much deeper than just a few crusty old statues - these priceless artifacts are representative of who the Cambodian people are and an important part of their culture and how they represent themselves to the world. This also has to do with respect. It doesn't matter if it's an ancient artifact or a cheap t-shirt -

So true, they owe the people their heritage and ancestral world view. The wars were brutal enough. I am very pleased with reconsideration. A no return policy and practice needs to be continuously challenged. Return to the people what belongs to them. It's the right thing to do.
I’m not sure if it represents who they are today since the people are adjusted to modern society. It does represent ancient civilization of humanity. The region of Angkor Wat was recently discovered it once was the biggest and most populous city in the world.
They were in much better hands before they were returned.

They're ancient and are better off in the hands of those who can keep them safe until it's gaurenteed their country can keep them safe too. They certainly don't belong in the hands of private collectors though. We should also pay those countries until we give them back.

You would be surprised if I tell you this but the looter are Cambodian, the bad one of course. They looted this artifacts, and sold it in a black market for money. It is still going on today unless it is being guarded in a museum. But sometimes couldn’t blame them either; they just want money to survive.

Have all of them been identified to be looted from Cambodia. Certain pieces bear resemblance to art styles found in Thailand, could it be that some of those pieces were looted from Thailand as well. I understand that the two countries shared a very connected history, but the standing buddha statue with the “unibrow” resembles a family of buddhist art from the “Theravadi” period, which predominated within the boundaries of modern Thailand in the 11th century. Would those have been taken from Thailand, they should return to Thailand.

The Angkor empire of Cambodia once included what is now Thailand. Then when the Angkor empire collapsed, the Ayutthaya empire of Thailand rose to power and incorporated what is now Cambodia. So yes, both of these countries have intertwined histories.
Could also include Vietnam too. Parts of Vietnam used to be controlled by Cambodia

Apart from saying I'm proud of America as a whole. There's nothing that we can really say we're proud of when it comes to antiques. Because we'll we conqured / bought this land. We have no ancient history. Our cultures are that of the world since many people live here. I'm glad they got their items back and I hope they take care of them and we don't see a headline 2 years from now "items given back from USA destroyed in riot"
