While he was search for clues on what happened, he saw a warp pipe, he thought to himself that maybe the pipe would warp him to clues on what happened, when Mario went through the warp pipe, he spotted something that would leave him shocked, he saw the head of Luigi on a pike and began to question everything on what led to this moment while not looking at the Luigi head.
If we're being honest here, if Mario found out someone either harmed or killed Luigi, no matter who it is, Mario will make sure that person pays for their crimes.
