Had 2 red ones, j reg and a L , and the J reg one was tuned with a bit of porting and polishing exhaust port opened up, the case's were matched to the barrel and all polished, it was bored out to the maximum, ( probably closer to 130cc than 100cc ) the carb was a 32mm and jetted fairly well, if not a bit rich😶🌫️ and from a RD 125 I used the micron exhaust ( had to cut it up and re weld it as well as a rew repairs) forks and bar's, front and back wheel, the front light and that little bit fairing and screen, and that belly pan , added a tooth to the front sprocket and tried a 36,37,38 teeth sprockets on the back and it was better with the 38 tooth 97mph at 10k RPM in any weather and 102mph with a tail wind and slight down hill, the 36 tooth could get 102mph on a straight road with a slight tail wind and 105mph down the hill, I only done it a few times! I put 8,000 miles on that engine, hard miles most of the time 😂 And it was just so reliable 🫢🤷♂️💪 That was 23 years ago now and having a bit more age & experience, I wish I had it now, it was cheap to run , roughly 60 miles to the gallon and nearly 200 ish miles to the tank , and castrol 2 stroke was £3-4 a liter The good old day's 😊
Beautiful ride and sound ! All my friends had the RD250 ,s back in the 70,s ! Never saw the 400 ! Lovely machine ! Definately bogging the carb in the lower revs, jetting maybe a little high !
Looks great, runs sweet, rides nice on the smooth tarmac, nice build & colours too, the only thing missing is the 2 analogue clocks in the view & the wonderfull scent of 2 stroke castrol r bean oil scenting the roads for 20 minutes... My mates knew if id been in town as they could smell the castrol r lingering on the main street... Happy dayz..
Omg I was playing this video through my hifi my Klipsch speaker's were playing the sound track to my teens , oh to be young again from a very jealous Brit.
@@andrewshore262 I think you're right. I'd swear though that one of my mates had one with twin front discs. It was a race bike, so it might well have been modified, but then again, my memory of it might be totally wrong, also.
@@davidbrayshaw3529 I think your mate probably upgraded and modified especially if he was racing, the brakes were definitely not a strong point! The 350LC which followed the RD400 did of course have a twin disc setup so Yamaha obviously knew something had to be done 👍
Nothing beats the sound of a 2-stroke when it clears its throat and starts to open up. I miss my RG.
That sound brings back so many amazing memories. Miss it so much!!
Had an Rd400 when I was 18. All speed pipes fitted with a great note. A flying machine and handled a dream. Wish I had never sold her.
Sure puts a smile on my face Phil, the sound the smell, caster oil can’t beat it.👍
Yamaha RD400...when I was 18 they were my dream....and my parent's nightmare.
2-stroke you got to love it! Had a yamaha RXS 100 energy induction.. in blue. Cool machine.

That could be in England if it wasn’t for the sun shining
Elle est magnifique cette bécane, et le son avec les deux pot de détentes c'est de la musique.

Top job mate, sounds great!
Now that really is a screamer !!, also watch out for the Shaaarks when you are blasting down the coast road :)
Lovely Yam RD 400 Daytona yellow is my colour of choice then this wonderful example in white rocks.
Thanks Matt I do like the yellow it would’ve been my second choice.👍
You have done a fantastic job on this bike as you do on all of them. Merry Christmas. CHEERS

That’s awesome Rob, 👍
I'd swear that I can smell this thing in my office. I've only just got out of the shower, too, and I'm covered in an oily mist.
It’s the new Cologne, caster oil mist. 😆👍

Nice video...i have a couple of RD 350's...what part of Victoria are you from?...I'm in Leongatha .

I had a wee rd125 as a kid black tank red graphics for a wee 125 it went like f_-k .
Don't be afraid to get the RPMs up way higher. You're going to foul your sparkplugs changing the gears so early.
not if its running right. but ths sounds like it needs setting up at lower revs
Two stroke more poke. RDs and Khs happy days. Getting old.
sounds great
Nice smell two stroke with some synthetic oil and the burbling exhaust
That sound is music
Oooooh that's a lovely bike 😮
Thanks Jim, still some more modifications to come.👍
All Rds sound sweater with a micron two stroke at ifs best
Should have twin front discs
that speedo looks like its needs recalibrating at 100 kph looked like it wasn't going faster tham 40 mph
Yes it does, definitely not correct.👍
Give her some welly mate..the UK model had twin disks upfront..
No don’t think so……single disc up front
@@andrewshore262 400's got a twin disc front in Australia, I'm sure. The 250 and the 350 definitely didn't, though.
@@davidbrayshaw3529 In Europe / North America it was a single disc, can’t see Yamaha adding an additional disc for the tiny Australian market 🤔

was 17 could not afford one
I always thought that the 400's had twin front discs, the 250 had a single.
Hi Patrick, the later RZ250/350 had twin rotors mines a 76 only had one rotor on the front, 2 would be nice though.👍
Fast bike 😂
