well as far as looking for a good spot to fish, i would go out in the fall with your depthfinder and look for and spots in the bay where a bar comes out or a dropoff and also watch the water looking at the weed structure. a point is a good spot to look for fish as they come from deep water around the points to come in shallow and feed then back out. to get rid of weeds, drop your decoy down close to the bottom and use it as a mower to cut the weeds off! @mistacleve Thanks again for the advice, i greatly appreciate this especially from an experienced spearer. I think, since we always pike fish in the summer i kind of have an idea of where to go. We do have a point in the 250 acre lake that has been know to produce some quality fish. I actually caught my first northern over 5 lbs off that point. The live fish is a sucker minnow used as a decoy just like the fake ones. There are many people who spear that just use live decoys, my dad is one of them, and there are others that use nothing but fake ones like your dad. The sucker minnow is attached by a harness there isn't a hook, but it would be legal to use a hook instead of a harness here in Minnesota. However It would be illegal to spear a fish that was hooked.
my lake up at my cabin is FILLED with 5-6lb northerns and is about 12- 13ft deep all around the shore for about 50 yards. But the thing of it is is that it is also real weedy, i mean the weeds are about 3 feet under the surface. My dad and i just bought a spear house and we were wondering if this problem is solveable. Any help please, it would be very appreciated. Thanks

On on of all the work, we pay an extra $18 to take pike a different way, so yeah a lot more revenue is generated for the fisheries than your average angler, highly reccomend people to check the facts before giving us spear guys some shit about not catching fish on a line.
