  • In this video, I talk about applying for jobs as an artist in the game industry. you can use these tips in the VFX industry as well. Also these rules could apply to other jobs in the industry as well. applying for jobs could be frustrating but once you get more experienced, you will eventually learn the best practices and you will be able to increase your chances to get hired.

I realized that I wasn't clear enough about the " Connections " in this video. When I said apply using your " Connections " I mean to apply, you can reach out to anyone that you personally know and now that person is working in the industry! Or you can reach out to someone that you have worked with in the past and now that person works in the studio that you want to apply for.

As always, great content man... Btw I really appreciate it when cover letters are not required. Investing 15 minutes to write a cover letter to a company that you will most likely never hear from is a big waste of time in my opinion. Cover letters at least to me seem to be an outdated concept. If they are interested in you after seeing your work, they can check you artstation/website or contact you. In the companies that I have worked for, the bulk of applications, being from all over the world is insane. When you separate the good portfolios, normally the next step is to read their info and make an interview (online or in person). If a cover letter gets a view, it will be just a quick glance, especially if the person recruiting has been going over portfolios all day, chances are they will not remember who wrote what. But anyway, Id love if you cover why you think Cover letters are important and how to make a good one. :)

I agree with everything you said 100%. I was basically trying to cover everything in this video but as you said cover letter is not always required.

Hi, what is the exact url of the google job search featured around 4:30 ? I've never seen that and when I do the exact same search than you I don't get the same result.... or is it a US-only feature?

Your channel is very helpful, can I suggest a video about what is the minimum level to entry in the industry? Maybe is a tough question. Some people say that I should see what is trending in Artstation and try to achieve something similar but I don't think is good to compare with people who have been working for 5 o 10 years when you don't have experience. What do you think? And thank you.

Really appreciate your videos. I'm finishing my 3D studies in school now but I feel like I haven't even started. Hope I could keep up and in a year two and have enough skills to apply for a studio.

Thank you for this. May I email you some questions please? I am rather stuck and could use some help from someone in the field. Right now the only advice i've gotten was from a academia. Heck one professor told me that college counted as experience in the field and I didn't need experience in the field. Since he was in the field and like an idiot I believed him.

Wow! This video was super cool! Thank you!
Your idea about making a booklet artwork and 3d print was so cool!! I'm a game animator and I wonder how can I surprise my dream company just like you said (Also they are in different country T_T )
You said one of the best ways is to ask our connections. Do you mean people that we know like our colleague or friends or....? Is it Ok to ask our Linkdin connections who work at that company even if they are not close to us? Isn't it rude?
And again thank you for this cool video!

Glad you like the video. I should have been more clear on that. I mean connections that you know personally! if you have a friend working in a studio or if you worked with someone but that person moved to another studio and you want to get a job in that studio as well. let me know if that clears it up for you. Siamak R I liked yours though ;). Thanks for taking the time to answer my comment. It wasn’t meant as a negative remark though. I was just trying to keep it grounded. I have been trying to land some work in the toy sculpting biz for quite some tome and it just seems like there’s always a reason not to hire me. They never give a valid reason though. Funny enough I have no trouble landing clients for graphic and webdesign (visual communications) and I als have no problem selling my sculpts as 3D prints. It’s just a difficult industry to get in I suppose.
