  • Odessey and Oracle is the second studio album by English rock band The Zombies. Mainly recorded between June and August 1967 at Abbey Road and Olympic Studios, it was released on 19 April 1968 by CBS Records. "Time of the Season" was released as a single and became a surprise hit in early 1969. The album was received indifferently on release, but has since become critically acclaimed. It ranked #100 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.

    I'm 68 years old and a lifetime music fan and I just discovered this album. What a masterpiece in my humble opinion. Even though I don't remember hearing it before, when I listen to the songs I have vivid flashbacks of my childhood in the 60s. To me this music encapsulates the feeling of that decade: the hippy-peace movement, mod clothes, flower-power, psychedelia, etc. The intricate melodies, vocal harmonies, interesting arrangements, and the ever-present mystical, magical, mellotron has made this one of my all-time favorite albums.

    So high an accomplishment for an album, it is baroque and elegant, but also hard rocking and psychedelic, the singing is irreverent and rebellious, yet soft and professional, it's amazing, it's been 8 years now that I listen to this album, still amazes me....
    That's one of the traits of good music, real good music, that you can listen to the piece for the 100th time and you still learn something new, you stil get amazed by something new, you can discover something you didn't know.
    I can see how people choose their music based on their own psyche, their needs and particular idiosyncrasy, say, the music can be somewhere from 1 to 10, but you will choose that particular style that fits your criteria, your own psyche.

      @danielvlee 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +Kyle Sanders Agreed. I wonder what they would have become had they stayed together as The Zombies. In retrospect, it seems like breaking up the group because one album didn't produce any hits was weak-minded, and it seems like it was poor management not to find a way to keep them together.
      Compare them to Pink Floyd, who lost their front man/creative force, but stayed together, and years later created 'Dark Side of the Moon', 'Wish You Were Here', and 'The Wall'. The world would be a worse place without those albums (and all the other Floyd albums besides 'Ummagumma')... which makes one wonder what Zombies albums _could have been_.

    I remember Rod, Hugh, Chris and Paul (RIP) at school although a couple of years younger than them. My year was at CCF camp when She's Not There was on ToTP. No-one else there was allowed to say a word during their performance! They were, are and always will be masters of their art.

    I'd only heard Time of the Season before but I'm glad I just gave this full album a listen. Really liked it a lot. Not a bad song on here but Cell 44, Beechwood and Butcher were my favorites. Gonna start listening to more of these older albums. New mainstream music doesn't do much for me.

    Love the Zombies. Our band does Time of the Season. This is a beautiful album. I agree with the influences of Beatles and Beach Boys. However; The band most influential on the Beatles, Zombies and Led Zeplin at the time, is, the nearly unheard of "Incredible String Band". Search for "My Father Was A Light House Keeper" its a fun song. Rumour has it all the great British pop bands bought 2 albums and played the hell out them Pet Sounds and anything by "The Incredible String Band". If you are a songwriter I suggest listening to every Incredible String Band song you can find. Some are rough as stones others are diamonds. You will be less afraid of writing your own songs.

    A rose for Emily, beechwood park, hung up on a dream. butcher's Tale, and Time of the Season, are probably the best songs in this LP. All the couples of "friend of mine" were real Friends of the Zombies, that were happy in love when the LP was recorded. Six months later, when it was released, all of them were separated. It's real! Funny thing...

    • @mikefoley3785
      @mikefoley3785 7 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      My Autobiography A Fanfic The Beatles were influenced to some degree by the Beach Boys, but no way did they copy them. And they definitely did not copy the Zombies.

    • @AlternativeSack123
      @AlternativeSack123 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      they were influenced massively by the beach boys, if it weren't for pet sounds Sgt pepper's wouldn't exist. and they recorded Sgt pepper at the same time this album was recorded in the same studio, so they probably heard some of this music

    • @mrkncr
      @mrkncr 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      In fact, according to Colin Blunstone, they used John Lennon's Mellotron that was left behind in the studio.

      Peep Peep Odessey was recorded after Sgt Pepper's. The Zombies hit it out of the park with this album but it's safe to say that the Beatles weren't influenced by them
