This is very much what my first breathwork experience was like. I went in open to trying the practice but was not prepared for the immense impact and emotional release I experienced. That initial session was definitely like trying a drug for the first time-- I've done breathwork a few times after that but none have been as impactful as that first high.
I got the "crab hands" that Matt experienced (which our guide had cautioned us about before we started the practice). I had cold sweats, I cried, I laughed and my limbs shook and contorted in ways I wasn't able to control. The whole experience is similar to what I imagine an ayahuasca ceremony to be like. After the practice ended, I was in an incredibly lifted/ euphoric state. It was surreal.
If you have the opportunity to experience a guided breathwork class, I highly recommend it. If nothing else, it makes for an interesting afternoon and story to tell.

    - CO2 decrease in blood causes alkalosis- increased ph- which causes calcium decrease in blood as it binds with albumin protein which increases the excitability of nerves which causes tetany and the other tingling sensations .......
-it decreases oxygen transport by blood due to increased ph
-it also decreases blood and oxygen supply to brain by about 30-45 percent as the blood vessels there gets squeezed due to it . - give us a high
-There is also some evidence that brain when is in stress can release dmt .
-it also activates parasympathetic system which gives us increased alpha and theta brain activity and the calm feeling ..........

I was a skeptic for years. I put everything you talked about under the same umbrella. Until I started breath work and meditation. It opened up a lot of doors to me. Someone who was never spiritual before, it was hard to discount the effects. Especially from someone who used to have intense dreams on a regular basis and resorted to substances to subdue them. Meditating and breath work almost immediately allowed me to control my dreams and emotions. If it works, it works.

Doing it for a couple hours will send your ass into the cosmos. I believe in this amazing work. The reason why people don’t like to do it is because it takes work… And people love to take a pill or anything else to get them in the feels. It’s a true healing practice.

For three reasons it will not be the same at home:
    1) being in nature alone without distractions is meditational and healing
    2) doing any activities in a group is always more effective. Thats why muslims are recommended to do praying in groups than alone.
    3) anything first time experience is always novel and spontaneous. You have no experience and your mind is open. When you try to force yourself to repeat the experience and you have some expectations as how it should go then you have already closed your mind.

Breathwork is the most powerful, free and easy way to create well-being that I know. As a result, I avoid doing it as much as possible. I'm now down to about 1 minute a day - the most joy I can let in at the moment. I've come to the conclusion that some part of me is not OK feeling joyful and happy because it's a huge identity shift and then "I don't know who I am, why I am or who I will become or what comes next." It's worth noting that most people stay chronically miserable or just comfortable in mediocre lives rather than go through this uncertainty. I love how easy breathwork is - because it highlights that the real challenge is not knowing what works or how to be happier, but navigating the fear of the unknown that every ego feels when they face fundamental change of self-definition.

  • @Saadabd912
    @Saadabd912 4 ปีที่แล้ว +10

TLDR: hyperventilation -> temporarily low calcium level in blood -> inability of muscles to relax -> spasms
As a doctor, the cause for the tetany (carpopedal spasm in this instance) is quite simple. Hyperventilation of any cause leads to your serum ionised calcium binding with proteins and giving you a transient low-calcium state. Without calcium your muscles have difficulty relaxing and you get the spasms you showed us in the video. Hope this helps!

The hand thing is called Carpopedal spasm and can occur in the hands and feet, its often as a result of lowered C02 tension (not, Carbon Dioxide, not Monoxide as mentioned in the video) as a result of hyperventilation and is a classical / hallmark sign of an anxiety or panic attack and is often associated with painful spasms and numbness / tingling sensations. Fascinating that you didn't experience these sensations during what would normally be a painful experience.

For all those who stuff their feelings and perceptions in the name of science, we are physically made from dust...minerals, which have very specific, varied and unique qualities as they interact with eachother, and with sunlight, temperature, water, oxygen, co², etc...and IMO, "breath work" is a good example of the ways that our bodies are miraculously made to operate and self-heal, as well as how the physical connects to the spiritual. The caveat that I see being foolishly ignored most is forgetting that just as the existence of good and evil exist very clearly in our physical world, both good and evil also exist in the spiritual world...and evil always masquerades as something good...in the same way that food, sex and even water can result in both good and evil...life and death...depending on how it is pursued and/or utilized, as well as the underlying motives.
The vital aspect of our motives circles back to one of the promises that our Creator has made: that He will give us the desires of our heart! The scary part is how easily our temporary physical perception and understanding is deceived when ignorant of the spiritual realm and its various influences...such as the ignorant desires of a child to run away from good parents and a good home because hebis not getting his way all the time...which correlates to 1/3rd of the angels doing the same thing, which resulted in the creation of hell which is the exact manifestation of their once naive understanding of being independent of their Creator and the WAY OF LIFE He has made clear to all in ancient Scripture. If you are not a father, try to imagine putting your life on the line regularly for your children, in love, and protecting them from things that you don't even want them to know about, for their own peace of mind...only to have them assume that you too operate with their own juvenile level of self-orientation and entitlement, and rebel against the authority and headship that virtually every living species recognizes in their parents. Of course, everyone has done that at some point or another, and every parent has experienced some degree of rebellion from their children, which our Creator designed to teach us about His love and hopeful guidance unto goodness, Truth and Light. †

I've been a drug addict for years (4,5 years clean nowadays) and you're right, it absolutely is a drug like experience!

They also do this in Jewish Churches, as well. It happened to me. I walked up to the front of the church. One person praying, who was standing in front of me. Another guy was standing behind me. He blew air on the back of my neck with his mouth. Next thing you know, I ended up falling to the ground. As I laid on the flour, I started to feel this sense of joy & happiness overcome me. I started uncontrollably chuckling for no apparent reason at all. All of a sudden.. I couldn't move! I tried as hard as I could to sit up, but I couldn't. It was like some powerful force that over came me & held me down. Weird? Definitely yes! But this experience gave me amazing positive + feelings inside, similarly to your own meditation experience!
    God Blessed!

You can also research polyvagal theory (sympathetic/parasympathetic nervous system) and see how breathwork helps release trapped trauma in the body. My thought is that your hand 'posture' could have been you intuitively doing a mudra.

While doing most kinds of “breathwork” can certainly yield benefits for most people, PLEASE TEACH PEOPLE TO BREATHE THROUGH THEIR NOSE!!
The nose and nasal cavities are evolutionarily designed for breathing. The mouth is just a backup system in the event that you cannot use your nose. Nasal breathing filters and humidifies air- the mouth does not. Nasal breathing harnesses nitric oxide which facilitates oxygen delivery to your blood cells. The mouth does not do this. Consistent and prolonged mouth breathing has many
negative effects. Get James Nestor’s book “Breath”. Good luck.

the science behind the 'tetany' Matt experienced:
repressed emotion has a relationship with the sympathetic nervous system (SNS) where it leads to muscle tension. There are degrees of severity to this where the higher the degree, the more unhealthy the repression is. Skeletal muscle is the lowest degree where it leads to skeletal muscle contractions, next is smooth muscle which is where there are smooth muscle contractions like consistent burping/farting, next is conversions which is temporary loss of certain functions/sensations like numbness in the body, loss of vision or hearing. There are other degrees of severity but these are the most common ones seen in the general population by psychiatrists/psychologists
The association between repressing emotion and the SNS is currently under research. Learn more about this from searching 'tension myositis syndrome' or 'psychosomatic muscle tension'

8:15 is not quite right. From what I have read I think it is: hyperventilation is leading to lower CO2 (dioxide, not monoxide) in your blood which leads to temporary alkalosis. That is the tingling in your arms and legs and also correlates with a lowered ability of your body to absorb oxygen.
