  • On February 18th and 19th 2012, I went to the Bunker Studios in Brooklyn to record a new album with Jojo Mayer, Mark Guiliana, Tim Miller, John Ellis, and Justin Vasquez. With John Davis at the console, we spent two days playing completely improvised music and "It Only Happens Once" was the resulting album.
There was a plan to make a documentary about these sessions, but in the end all that materialized was this very rough edit that is out of sync in some places, doesn't tell the complete story, and is missing titles and credits.
But as this is what there is, this is what I shall share on the 10th anniversary of making this record. Maybe the freest I've ever allowed myself to be as a band leader, and perfect timing to remind how to get back to that head space as we depart for Spain in a few weeks to record album number 13.
You can stream this, and all of my other records, on all major platforms should you wish to check out the music in more detail.

This album saved my life. Janek is highly underrated and Tim Miller is an absolute master. The conviction from everyone’s playing on this record is inspiring.

Amazing! I just ordered the album. I own American Elm, The Union, Theatre by the Sea, but missed this. Now, late in the night, doing some work, I listen to it over and over. So great!

    Love this documentary!
I had no idea that the record was made like that. I thought the name of the album had to do with the combination of session players, but never thought it also referring to the compositions.
The record is epic and undoubtedly inspiring. Thank you all!

not only the beauty of the music that Janek shared but also seeing that while creating this beautiful music; this human being remains modest, humble and inspiring....this is something that radiates through the space along with the sound waves....

Thank you so much for this full video! I've waited for this particular video since you released the short version of it. It is my favourite album of yours, as it helped me to develop a broader vision of how musical creativity can be expressed. Thank you and thanks to everyone who participated in creating this album!

I’ve listened to a lot of records in my 39 years old! From progressive rock, metal, punk, hard core, fusion, world music, electronic music and more. Whether it's solo musicians or bands! This Janek album is an exquisite beauty, for me who am a musician it was a watershed, along with Jojo Mayer and Nerve. I say this because after listening to so many songs, I didn't expect to be surprised by something new, that's what I listened to this album long after its release.

this is soooooo TRUE , just realistic! I hope a lot of you guys starting out there with music and wanting to be the "NEXT BIG THING" (in jazz especially) WHATCH THIS, as it is the real deal. JUST SO TRUE how music is done, and how musicians are. We are humans FIRST, and you should be TOO. Than.... music comes. Please remember that
