Bob Ryan, Jeff Goodman and Gary Tanguay examine and remark on Danny Ainge Legacy as a player and executive with the Boston Celtics.
They also discuss where things went wrong in what looked like such a promising basketball future in Boston and how they an right the ship under the inexperienced GM Brad Stevens and 1st time head coach Ime Udoka.
My (Nick Gelso) opinion of the recent front office explosion is as usual, a bit emotional, bordering on #boomerrage -ish. Lol. Here goes…
Danny Ainge is the modern day (closest to) equivalent of Red Auerbach. Ainge is the closest thing that fans under 30 can even sniff a faint smell of Red’s cigar when Danny would come around or fleece an opposing GM. I loved Danny as a player and GM. The link below is super interesting opinions and questions so Ainge from our CLNS reporters who cover the current team. Plus my opinion on Danny Ainge below… thx for watching and commenting 😀
I love him too. Seems like todays fan doesn’t account for the fact that he kept celtics traditions and pride alive during another 10+ year championship drought. Think about 1992-2002. What a mess. Even w Red, Russell, Tommy, Havlicek, JOJO, KC, Cowens all alive and ever present at games and many practices, it’s was not our golden era and by time pitino quit, he had gutted the pride of the franchise, only Ainge and new ownership miraculously brought that back in 5 short seasons. And while Boston hasn’t been in the NBA finals in 11 years and saw 2019-21 be the lowest points for the franchise in two decades, Ainge was there. We knew what to expect, we knew at the end of the day he’d preserve the great traditions Red, Brown, Russell, Heinsohn, Most and Cousy built. Now, as semi retired media, consuming games on tv only magnifies how much the culture in Boston changed the min Danny got “cancelled” and i do believe, though not in the traditional sense of the word “cancelled” in this context, Kyrie’s comments were what brought everything to the forefront and even when (CURRENT) players perceptions of our city (and opponents) became very pronounced, and a change was so obviously needed, i never thought it Would go down like it did. CLNS current reporters and personalities did a segment on this very topic when Danny announced his taking (whatever his new position is) the job w Utah, they really shed some light on the subject. Though ownership seemed to move towards the decision that was best for business (Ainge out and BRAD ‘fired up’), at the end of the day, Danny won. Find out from our guys here, i think you’ll find perspective interesting.

Video contains a lot of statements ("it had run it's course", "wasn't going to win another title in Boston") that haven't aged well and show how little the "media" (and we fans, included) on the periphery of the team/league know how or why one team consistently beats the others. Everything that is currently good about the Celtics can be traced to Danny. Watching from home, problems arose first because of Hayward's injury, then Kyrie Irving, and lastly, for whatever reason, because Jason Tatum and Jaylen Brown refused to buy in on the defensive end and to pass the ball on the offensive end. I would have kept Danny and traded any player not buying in .... and, of course, Danny would be in charge of making the trades.

I mean it's hard to trace Derek White to Danny Ainge. I guess you could say that they used the 2019 Sacramento pick, but if they didn't use that, they would have used a different draft pick. But don't get me wrong. I mean he is more responsible for this roster than just about anybody. But it's hard to argue that his decision to leave wasn't the right one

You still stand by this statement now if they want a title?

@@navyguyinva I thought that was weird as well, must have confused the Boston Celtics with the Toronto Blue Jays.

Ainge was a good player on some great teams who ultimately bailed on the Celtics when they declined. Always thought he'd develop into a better offensive player like Havlicek did after others retired. As an exec he's a great talent evaluator who had trouble putting complimentary teams together. And he hired coaches from outside the Celtic family. Stevens now being paid huge $$ after being kicked upstairs.

I LOVE Danny. I don’t care. He’s never gotten any respect which I think is a SHAME.

Personally nobody else’s opinions are going to change my attitude toward Danny Ainge, whether positive or negative. Perhaps I’ll give it a listen but I did already see the vid with Bob Ryan & I got the impression that overall, Boston is cordial toward Danny…as it should be. Danny was a supremely gifted athlete and a valuable member of the Big 5 in the Bird era. He’s been loyal to The Celtics & what more could you ask for?
It’s unfortunate that he got tangled in that Kyrie mess (I’m not a fan of athletes grandstanding for Social Justice during games. Whatever their politics or causes may be, they need to promote that OUTSIDE the arenas) but whatever he does & wherever he goes, he will ALWAYS be a CELTIC as far as I’m concerned.

@@NBAHistoryCLNSA laugh at whose expense? Ownership. It's never been clear to me who it's decision it ultimately was. Whether it was A and she decided to leave or whether or not he was fired.. People say it's mutual, but would he have left if they didn't fire him? Or would they have asked him to stay?
