    Description: Powerline is an established technology that offers a cheap and easy to install solution to anyone experiencing home Wi-Fi issues.
    In this video we look at how you can use Powerline Communication technology to extend the wireless range of your home network. We worked with the TP-Link AV600 Powerline Wi-Fi Kit (Model No. TL-WPA4220 Kit), but the TP-Link AV500 and TP-Link AV1200 kits both work in the same way.

    Nice tutorial video. Can this device be used to extend a WiFi network to a separate building that's on a different electrical system? The buildings are approximately 300feet away.

    • @mydoodads
      @mydoodads  6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Hi Tech,
      In theory, I think the answer is yes. I have this vague recollection of people complaining about other people being able to intercept data travelling over Powerline outside of a home. This was fixed by adding encryption on both the adapter and the extender.
      Also, if I remember correctly a Scottish power company ran a trial scheme running data over their power cables. However, the trial was abandoned because the data could be heard traveling through the cables.
      While Im no expert on electricity I am also wondering if the electrical technology between the two buildings and the road would stop the PowerLine signal from reaching its destination.
      An alternative option to Powerline might be a Wireless Mesh network but it will be more expensive.
      If you do try using Powerline technology to link the two buildings could you please let us know how you got on. Its a really interesting problem.

    Hi! Great video! Thanks for so detailed review! Just wanted to ask please if it is possible to connect these adapters to the splitter of electricity, so they will not occupy the plug? And if it is possible to connect 2 kits from one router, I mean that I will connect just one (the smaller adapter) to the router and will place the two others at different places at home. Will it work? Thanks!!!

    • @mydoodads
      @mydoodads  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think that using a splitter will cause issues with your Powerline network. So a better option for you might be to get a kit that has passthrough built in. Perhaps something like the TL-WPA8630p kit?
      As to your other query. It is possible to connect multiple adapters to your electric mains.
      These articles might help to give you some additional information.

    Hi Mydoodads, thanks for the comprehensive setup tutorial. Could you please tell me what the purpose of having the UTP connected permanently to the router is (apposed to just repeating the wifi signal)? I'm thinking specifically in my case I have and ADSL router supplying the internet which feeds a Tomato/Shibby packet shaping router to which people connect via wifi. The wifi and LAN connections are served entirely different IP ranges and for security and routing they need to connect to the wifi. In the method you've shown, having the extender connected via UTP, would that mean people are being served the LAN or the Wifi IP? Many thanks.

    • @mydoodads
      @mydoodads  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi JustifyJustin
      The process shown in the video, disables DHCP on the TP-Link PowerLine extender so that users receive an IP address from the routers DHCP. A network cable (UTP) is permanently connected to the router so that anyone connecting to the PowerLine Extenders wireless access point or its network ports, will not only be able to access the internet, but also access the LAN created by the router.
      Because of the way a WiFi repeater works, it will typically cut the speeds of a wireless network in half. This is because a WiFi repeater will have to create a backhaul to the wireless access point it is looking to extend. This backhaul is created by dividing half of the repeaters wireless signal, which creates slower data transfer speeds.
      The nodes in a wireless Mesh network, get around the problems experienced by wireless repeaters by using three wireless signals. Typically, a mesh node uses a 2.4Ghz, and a 5Ghz wireless signal to allow devices to connect wirelessly. Then it uses a second 5Ghz signal to create a backhaul to the Mesh networks primary node. The primary node is the device connected via a network cable to our broadband connection and is providing DHCP to our whole network.
      On a Powerline extender, as it is using the mains cables in a house to transfer data. The buildings electrical system is acting a the backhaul. This means that we get faster data transfer speeds than if we were to use a WiFi repeater.
      Hope this helps to answer your query.

    • @mydoodads
      @mydoodads  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Adam, good question and one I don't think anyone has asked this before.
      I usually start by testing which channels are the most used in my area. Then set both the router and tp link adapters to one of the primary channels that is being least used. For example 1, 6 or 11
      Then after the initial setup, I will spend a couple of days monitoring and testing the connections. Adjusting devices if I think I need to.
      Hope that answers you question.

    • @mydoodads
      @mydoodads  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The number of additional Powerline extenders that you can connect to the same network will depend on the model of extender you use www.tp-link.com/uk/support/faq/434/
      You can then connect existing power line adapters using the network pair button - www.tp-link.com/uk/support/faq/319/
      Hope this helps to answer your query.

    Great vid, but for models that do not have wireless access point (Ethernet only connections), is it possible to connect a wireless router to the other end to create a wireless access point?

    • @mydoodads
      @mydoodads  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, you can use a second wireless access point with any PowerLine extender that only has Network ports. However, the instructions would be a little different, as most of the configuration would be done on your second wireless access point. If I were in your situation. I probably would configure my second wireless access point to bridge mode and just replicate the SSID and password to my main wireless access point.
      Hope that helps

    Hi there, once youve paired the tp link close together can you unplug it and take it to a different socket and it will stay paired or do you have to do that a different way?

      Yes, once you have paired the plugs you can unplug the extender and plug it into another plug socket in your house.

    You know the smaller 1 with 1 ethernet port, does that also bounce/extend the WiFi signal or is that just an intermediate?

      Hi Haatib G
      The smaller one with a single ethernet port, is only used to get your broadband from your router to the electric circuit of your house. It is only the larger unit which acts as a wireless access point.

    Does this work without that adapter?
