    I'd love to see information about that RIOT replacement board, I know the actual RIOT chips are still out there to be able to buy, but they're dwindling. The same for the TIA and the 6507. It would be awesome to have a modernish equivalent like this (probably use even less power, generate less heat, and probably more reliable), because like many others have ran into, buying replacements only to have them DOA, and it will come a time where you won't be able to buy them anymore.

    • @jnharton
      @jnharton ปีที่แล้ว

      You can probably substitute a plain 6502 for it's cut-down sibling (6507) either via an adapter or with a custom designed board.
      And much of the 6532's functionality is available in the 6522 (I/O and timers) even if modifying the original Atari ROM might be necessary to make that work.
      At some point you might as well just use a CPLD or an FPGA to replace all the chips though.

    • @madmax2069
      @madmax2069 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jnharton yeah, I believe FPGA is what they used for the pokey replacements (but I could be wrong), that's pretty much what I was getting at. They're getting to the point of being harder to find a good chip as many are just reclaimed junk and slapped onto the bay, and sometimes even other electronic component sites.

      The RIOT replacement module I designed might not fit in the actual ATARI 2600. The module is wider than the chip so in the ATARI it will probably interfere with cartridge connector. Also, my RIOT doesn't support the paddle... only joysticks... but even there, the CPLD on the module does not have built in pull up resistors so to get things working I opened a Sega Genesis controller and installed pull up resistors in there. For that reason I don't publicly share the design other than on Circuit Maker. I can email extra details if you are interested in making improvements to my design.

    This is amazing work. I looked at your Gerbers and BOM but am confused how the BOM is listed. Many of the part location only shows a specific location, but the qty seems to be double what you listed. Here's an example: 4.7k R2, R5 S4.7KCACT-ND qty=4. Assuming R2, R5 is for this part, but why 4? It goes all the way with a few components missing qty from the txt file. I think this would be a fun build and will attempt if you could clarify the BOM File. Thanks!
