- Daniel Mason’s North Woods follows one house in the woods of New England as it passes through families (with inhabitants both human and not) and endures natural and human history. Mason joins us to talk about how he connected with his setting, writing a novel covering a large timespan, playing with form and more.
The Bee Sting by Paul Murray chronicles the saga of a family in a post-economic-collapse Ireland. Murray joins us to talk about the cultural background of his novel, writing a dysfunctional family, the influences of Joyce and Faulkner and more.
Listen in as these authors speak separately with Miwa Messer, host of Poured Over.
This episode of Poured Over was hosted by Miwa Messer and mixed by Harry Liang.

Just finished reading North Woods for the second time, in anticipation of our upcoming book club discussion. It is so amazing, my favorite book of 2023. Even better the second time.
I really enjoyed this book and LOVED the ending!!!! Bravo Daniel Mason!!!!
Daniel Mason’s book= my favorite of the year
read both of these, and they were both mind-blowing
Great interviews! I just finished The Bee Sting and loved it! Wasn’t familiar with North Woods but it also sounds intriguing
Two excellent books. Each author is so adept at threading the resonance of the past into the present.
I don't know how I'll get along with Northwoods since it's it sounds very ambitious and I'm so bad at keeping track of names but elements of it sound very interesting and to me and I am intrigued enough to want to pick it up!
I was a bit worried about that too but it was easy to follow. I actually listened to the audio version and it's wonderful. The different readers really add to the story.

Just jump in. I sampled the book on a Kindle sample and was instantly captivated. So try that. This book is magic! No problems keeping track of the characters. Truly.
@@chrisgreene3908 I'll take your word for it!
It builds on itself. You got this.
