Hello, friends from Ukraine! Recently this video has received a new breath of life thanks to the time you've dedicated to watching it. I am overwhelmed by your messages of gratitude and I am very glad that you find that the video does justice your country's cultural representations in the game. BTW, "Duty" kinda represents russians in stalker, in Ukrainian localization they speak russian, and almost every in-game anekdote about "Duty" is modified ukrainian anekdote about russians
Didn't know the stuff about the origin of jokes about Duty. A confusing part of the ukrainian dub, on that note, is that the Military still speaks in Russian
@@cdru515I don’t think that means much considering most “Ukrainians” who are sent to fight against Russia come from Russian speaking regions. Ukrainian government prefers to draft people from those areas rather than the Western parts like Lviv.
@@thecossackcrusaderofholybr8448 That's not true, man, Ukrainians from all regions are fighting at the front. Indeed, more volunteers will join the army from the east, since there are much more people there who lost everything due to Russian shelling, but to say that the Ukrainian authorities somehow choose who to send to the front and who not is stupid.
@@thecossackcrusaderofholybr8448 This is not entirely true. part of what makes stalker such an amazing game is the fact that all of its history interlinks with the past and the future. From a novel, to a movie, to the names of the people behind them (andrew tarkovsky). The factions are so easily now replaceable with their real-life counterparts. And everything the game showcases is in part inspired by what is really happening. Makes you forget your supposed to be playing a game, not a reminder of whats happening right now
Ukrainian here. Man! I have NEVER ever looked at this game from this angle. Not only you cracked our „time being“ but gave the whole new meaning to the game I love and am currently playing. Thank you so much for your support!
I'm Mexican but I have to thank you for this video, as quality content is getting scarce in this platform. It's well structured and nuanced, it's easy to understand and I love that you're putting things in their place. I really hate it when people think Russia and Ukraine are the same and, thus, are interchangeable, which is effed up. On another note: I hope Ukraine wins the war 🙌❤️
On side note from Ukrainian - we need more content about Mexico, Aztecs, all Their Empires, some shit like Assassins Creed with interesting culture information. Pretty please 🤩
Thank you! It's so nice to hear that there are Mexicans that actually dig it. Majority that surrounds me barely knows where Ukraine is and loves pinsche ..uto Putin.
@mexicobeachlife the avg Mexican can't even point Mexico on a map lol, but I get you it's infuriating that half of the population here loves russia despite russians being involved in shady sht in Tijuana and Cancún (and elsewhere in the country)

I express my sincere gratitude and respect for such a detailed and deep analysis of the game from a position that even my compatriots do not touch. Good job man ✌
Slavic brothers must stop killing each other, as a Croatian this conflict is similar to our own war for independence and that makes me sad as we only destroy our potential and our grudged make us nothing but puppets to either side.
@@deadset15-hrvavik17 Tell Russia to GTFO then. This was entirely their doing. "Brothers" don't dictate what economies they can align with for their own prosperity, "brothers" don't invade and annex territory, "brothers" don't launch cruise missiles at energy infrastructure to make them freeze in the winter without electricity, "brothers" don't grind cities to dust like Mariupol, Bakhmut, etc, "brothers" don't create mass graves, "brothers" don't do massacres like they did in Bucha, so on, so forth. There is no "puppet" here. It is absolute buffoonery to "both sides/either sides" this conflict. Russia is the aggressor, plain and simple. Any other spin on this is Russian apologia. Don't even put Russian people and Ukrainian people in the same sentence. In Ukraine, Yanukovych sent freaking IFVs to crush the protestors. You know what the protestors did? They burned those vehicles with Molotov cocktails before they could crush the barricade. At the end, Yanukovych fled to Moscow. Ukrainians have a fighting spirit, Russians do not. They are NOT the same people and NEVER WILL BE. One is a society that is young, and trying to find its place in the world. The other is a centuries old death cult empire that is rotten to the core. The absolute rot that is Russian society has allowed Putin to remain in power unchecked for more than a decade. Ask any of them, they will answer "oh I'm not interested in politics", or "I support Putin". This is the MAJORITY. This is their entity. 2:07 it's soooo true, i laughed so hard. Living in Spain, i heard so many times "ey ruso" even after i told them that "soy Ucraniano". "Dile algo en ruso" or "como se dice en ruso" - this was the usual words to start a conversation with me. And honestly it didn't offend me at that time like probably it would now. The russian authorities, propaganda and their muppets, did everything so that normal people distanced themselves from them and did not want any associations with them. Honestly, thank you for your caring. I'm surprised how much you know about my country, it's not usual for western people. Even some Ukrainians know less. I'm gonna try and learn more about Dominican Republic in it's sixties.
Thank you. You figured out things and put them more eloquently than I ever could. Back in 2013 when first meetings started forming in front of the main campus of my university, I did not go with mostly people of western Ukraine, as I was from the eastern side, and did not have that identity formed yet, confused. By a few weeks time it was obvious as day who am I. And this realization came to many ukrianinas just like me. Stalker was never a Russian game. It had Russian language for a profit reasons, none else.
The only thing that you miss about Ukraine is that in 2014 only a minor part of Ukrainians realized that russia is the enemy. So up to 2022 there were people who were against making the games for russia. And there was always a big wave of negative comments to each game made in Ukraine which was made for russia. I.e. there was no Ukrainian language only russian. But they were the minority. Most of the Ukrainians believed that these the politicians who "try to quarrel two brotherly people", and mocked the conscious minority by calling them "warmongering party". And even when the fullscale invasion started it took 2 more years, for Ukrainians to get the majority of the people to realize that russia is the enemy. Imagine how fucked up it is. There are rocket and bombs thrown at the cities, yet people are still reading russian news, watching their tv shows, listening to their music, and speaking russian, despite the know Ukrainian language.
A good friend of mine's father was like that for a while. It's frustrating to him that it took so long for his father to realize that his soviet nostalgia was long gone and buried. But it's also a sign that reality dawns on everyone eventually, the sad part is the price there is to pay before that happens. Stay strong Anton

Firstly, sowwy for my Engrish. Oh mate, what a video! It was surprising to find here such a DEEEP insight into my country's philosophy, history, politics, and circumstances. You've done a very great deed for the Stalker series and Ukrainians in general with this clarification of cultural confusion. Often I see Russians trying to monopolize the achievements of people from other nations. Still, because of people like you, it is possible to preserve the roots of all the different cultural "products". Appreciate your work!
I'm glad to have hopefully done justice to the truth. All I have is my curiosity and access to information, my biggest fear is being wrong and misguiding the truth so thank deeply you for watching and commenting!
Man, I'm happy to be one of your first 500 subs. Blowing me away with the quality, especially for such a new channel. I see no reason at all why you couldn't be one of the top video essay creators in gaming. TO THE MOON WITH YOU!
I highly appreciate what you did. Things like these MUST been heard widely so people who are unfamiliar with situation and (for numerous reason) won't dive deep into history would have a possibility to get honest brief explanation of what exactly were going on. Despite the fact what the video is about the game, you brought very important context. Thank you again.

"Monolith" is a metaphor for a totalitarian regime (or for the Soviet Union). The developers told this in the documentary about S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 on the TH-cam-channel of Xbox.
Shout out from NCD. This is what I call "earned a sub" kinda video. I feel you're mostly a stalker channel about mods and everything but personally I would love to see this kind of video about other games, not quite review but rather a nice retrospective that gives me yet another look into an oldie goldie. Anyway hope to see more of you.

Considering that in the Ukrainian localization, the Duty faction speaks Russian, it's really funny (in a good way) that you compared them to Ukrainian nationalists. And "Freedom" is literally a decipherment of the Ukrainian trident. However, your perspective on the Stalker trilogy is very fresh and makes me think. Thank you very much for your work, I turned on this video expecting to see another cheeki breeki meme video, but I found a really cool analysis 👍
@@jacksmiling07 I did think about it a lot, but if you consider that the main Ukrainian militant nationalist groups emerged in the East of the country and were originally russian-speaking as well as heavily outfitted by zenitco, it's almost duty's self fulfilling prophecy. I have Ukrainian friends from the east that painted a picture that the russian language was never really considered a pledge of allegiance to russia but rather a higher tier language, the same language that the elites and oligarchs spoke back then. It's also why Duty speaks it, elitism.
@@cantgameright You know, it really makes sense. Returning to USSR where higher education was exclusively in Russian. Russian language, as evidence of elitism in the post-soviet space, paradoxically suits Duty.
Thanks for the dubbing, bro. your video has been on my “to watch later” list for a long time, but I couldn't get to it because of the language barrier. Glory to Ukraine!
This is a very well thought out and explained video. As an artist and writer that does everything from tattoos, books, game quest and environment dialog/design - there are many times that I step back and start to see patterns and meaning in the things I've made that were so obviously linked to aspects of my life and past/present experiences. I never really noticed it before I had started seeing a therapist who was also an artist and had learned about the psychology of art. When tackling deeper issues she would sometimes have me draw certain objects, or have me bring in work I'd been doing. Some of the ways I subconsciously inserted into things was kinda wild. There were also a lot of details and deep seeded things that seemed to come to light through my work. I only describe this because there are so many times that I hear someone say, "Just because those things line up doesn't mean they're true. I highly doubt the writer was thinking about all these things when they wrote the story". There usually isn't any arguing with this opinion either, because they simply choose not to believe how active the subconscious mind is in our moment to moment decisions and actions. But honestly, there is so much that we still have to learn about these parts of human consciousness. I'm blabbering now though. ADHD lol
What a wonderful video, pretty interesting thoughts. Thank you for explaining the situation in Ukraine from your point of view. As a Ukrainian, I am very grateful to you.
I belive peapole call it russian fallout becuse someone from east says "russian" they mean everything that was part of soviet union Btw metro 2033 seems closer to fallout than stalker so they are dumb both ways
If those people even after 3 years of war can't realise that Ukraine is not Russia and Stalker is not Russian game, even tho it is plastered everywhere in the game and in the website, I don't know what to say about those people.
@@simulify8726 >even languages sound similar tell me you've never heard ukrainian without actually telling me. mate, ukrainian and russian are as similar as english and spanish/german so don't be offended if someone will call some Far Cry or whatever an achivement of Spain/Germany lol
The Spelling gets addressed at 16:37. But for pronunciation in English, it's a matter of English grammar rules and the stressing of the correct strong syllable. In English, it's actually not correct to say "CHORE"-noble, just like it's not correct to say "CHAIR"-noble which would be mimicking the muscovite pronunciation. The strong syllable in this word is in the middle, Chor-NO-byl, which usually leads to "o" sounds that lack roundness in the neighboring syllable in order to stress the main one. It's why you pronounce "Chocolate" the way you do, and not "chowe-cowe-late." Compare to how you say "Coral" next to "Corral," another example is how "correct" is not pronounced "CORE-ect," and you say "kuh-rekt" instead. English is actually my second language which means I actually studied it.
15:00 you are damn right about people being shy about carrying ukrainian culture. People were shy to even speak ukrainian, because there was a russian empire and then soviet stereotype that only stupid villagers speak ukrainain unlike people in cities. villages speak almost exlusively ukrainain (those that I visited at least). I was ukrainain speaker as a kid till about 3rd grade when we moved to a larger city where I become russian speaker. Now I dont speak russian again (except when talking to russians I am still in contact with) Alo, what is that cool mod that you have played on the background (seemingly shadow of chornobyl campaign?)
The war started when i was only in middle school and it really left a big impact on me. In just really grateful that people that are not Ukrainian understand all of the situation and struggles and tell others about it. Loved your video, will watch more ❤

As a Ukrainian - I have read the roadside picnic and other books written by Strugatsky brothers. The thing I noticed clearly reading those books - it is how they mask the rotten soviet union in texts of another planets, or "west", because in other circumstances their books would have been never published.
This is just... Wow. I'm an ukrainian and my guy, you really opened my eyes on this my favourite game from THIS perspective. Definitely subscribe and like and I'm looking for further videos!
Btw, about monolith guys, i don't think that in 2007 there was a question about russians and their fanaticism and all this context was a subject for discussion for everyday life of an ordinary citizen. Times were just different. And yes, it's a fact that there always was people that wanted distance themselves from russia, like people that cared about the national identity but again, not a discussion on daily basis in minds of ordinary people and definitely in other context - more like cultural. So, i guess it's just a lucky coincidence. But now it's different times and if this same game would see the light today, people in russia would say how russophobic it is, and how it's an allegory on Z-zombies and supporters of war.
People who know their history have never been happy with a fact that our neighbor is russia. Passive aggression between two counties was always there, more so from russians as they viewed ukrainians as their "little brother" who lost his roots which is very ignorant because ukrainians were never russians. Ukraine was part of USSR not by choice but by force, you can call it colony if it makes it easier to understand. USSR government did a good job over the years in creating a narrative that "we are the same" and other bs with language etc. For foreigners its even more confusing and much easier to fall for a false narrative as many slav namings can be confused between ukrainian and russian languages. For example famous Kievan Rus' has " Rus' " in the name, which can be confused as something russian when in reality those are two completely unrelated things. Russian leader back in the day were smart enough to realize that it will be very easy to confuse foreigners and came up with a very similar name to " Rus' ". Fun fact if you spell "Rus' " in ukrainian language and compare it to the spelling of "Russia" it wont have similar beginning like in english at all: Rus' - Русь. Russia - Росія. Русь - Росія First 3 letters arent the same, they just similar. This difference is lost in English translation which makes it confusing and very suspicious why the heck Russia has its name in English with "U" as a second letter cuz even in russian language itself its spelled with "O"
@@groovie444 The name Rus by itself have nothing to do with Russia. The just stole it (as always), changed it slightly and said "It's our name, look how similar it is"

part of what makes stalker such an amazing game is the fact that all of its history interlinks with the past and the future. @@deadset15-hrvavik17 Tell Russia to GTFO then. This was entirely their doing.

You sound like a trans person who "figured out" who he/she is, lmao.

Man, that was a majestic video. Thank you very much for such a great representation. I even teared up a bit. People like you keep me sane.

@cantgameright understandable, however i have no respect for the english language and as such pronounce it as i was thought
Thanks!

Fun fact if you spell "Rus' " in ukrainian language and compare it to the spelling of "Russia" it wont have similar beginning like in english at all:
Rus' - Русь.
Russia - Росія.
Русь - Росія
First 3 letters arent the same, they just similar.
