John Martyn, OBE (11 September 1948 -- 29 January 2009), born Iain David McGeachy, was a British singer-songwriter and guitarist. Over a forty-year career he released twenty studio albums, working with artists such as Eric Clapton and David Gilmour. He has been described by The Times as "an electrifying guitarist and singer whose music blurred the boundaries between folk, jazz, rock and blues".
I saw John Martyn so many times - sometimes two or three nights in a row. I met him once at a Radio promo recording in Lothian Road in Edinburgh, and one afternoon, bizarrely I was listening to John Martyn with my window wide open and he walked past my flat into the pub across the road. Amazing, amazing music from what appears to be a tortured soul. This was his outlet. And it is utterly incredible.
I met John Martyn once
.....which was nice
I am still buying his albums today. Not quite found them all yet, but I shall persevere.😊
One world is a gem, 1977
My favourite is Glorious Fool with Phil Collins
I first heard John in 75, dropped acid with a friend who played me 73’s ‘Solid Air’. What an introduction to this marvellous musical genius. One of my most musically formative moments, played that album over and over that night and onward into the future.
Was 'there' too...all the best sky rider...
likewise m'chum... first heard One World on psychedics in 79...and his music hasfollwed me across the World to this day...RIP John McGeachy!
Those who know...know😊😊😊
The Nelson in Hastings was a favourite haunt of John's he left a big mark on many peoples lives with his heartfelt harmonics loved him to bits ❤
I frequented the Nellie hundreds of times in the mid 70's....
my Amazing uncle, really does me proud :) r.i.p
+Rory Purdey
Your Uncle John Martyn was the most amazing Artist/Lyricist/Musician. I was lucky enough to see him live at least 4 times, each & every-time just as beautiful as the previous. To this day his music touches my Heart like no other. His humour was wicked too! Love love love
Rory Purdey I was lucky enough to see him at the Fairfield Halls in Croydon I think in 1984 when I was eighteen love John Martin a man that's not afraid to show his emotions which I can relate to x
Millie Williams
were you as proud of the way he treated his 2 wives?
Who are u? Why send me a mail? Stop please.😣

Would follow John around his London gigs back in 1972 like a little lost kitten, this man and his music meant so much 2 me.
2 great musicians not trying to be clever just making one gorgeous sound. marvellous.
Picking out John Martyn's most beautiful songs is well nigh impossible, but this song - and especially this performance - has a better claim than average. I imagine John is playing this on a regular basis for the Angels in Heaven. It's not of this world. Beauty overload.
As Richard Thompson wrote "God Loves a Drunk." And as he also wrote "Maybe That's Just the Price You Pay For the Chains You Refuse." As an alcoholic I don't believe most of us are searching for oblivion, we're searching for ecstasy.
John Martyn hit the mark. The best I can do is love the man and his music.
Love love the fretless bass playing by Allan Thomson.
I saw him live five times with John Martyn and he's one amazing bassist!
I remember him coming to play in HMP Long Lartin. I’ll never forget him for that. God Rest John.
One minute of john martyn change your mood for the rest of the day...
So much emotion in his voice I can’t help crying every time I hear this.
This will always be my favourite piece of music. I saw John many times and still miss him.Im 65 now.
We were so privileged to have witnessed this genius.
I played on the same bill with John way back in '71, had a chat with him backstage, what a nice guy, friendly and communicative intelligent great musician, his music will live forever.
Two great guitarists - not a shred in sight! :) Happiness!
Absolutely ..
Gorgeous. The OGWT version of this song with Danny Thompson is the best - has a real psychedelic feel to it. John was the real deal. I saw him live many times, including the shortest gig I ever saw, where he fell off the stage tuning up, and was carried away!
you lucky person to have discovered the incredible music of the late genius mr john martyn
Saw John martyn many times from the grace and danger tour onwards. I loved how he never played a song the same way twice. Would love to have heard him play acoustic but he was at a different stage of his journey then. Still awesome. Saw him in the half moon in Putney. Tiny room, full band, brilliant.
One of my top JM favourite songs, and this may just be my favourite rendition ever; Im listening as I write. Absolutely beautiful. To me, music doesnt come any better than this-and a masterclass in guitar from two exponents who utilise the electric guitar to create atmosphere. In that respect, their approach to the guitar is similar (as Gilmour hinted in the pre TV interview). Im glad Gilmour is still around. There was only one John Martyn and he will not be replaced. This is a genuine classic.
I love the way they respect each others playing .not trying to out-do each other. beautiful.
This gentleman is one of the GREATEST musicians in history!!! Small Hours is incredible... Respect to Gilmour!!!
These gentlemen where for sure one of the gratest in our time!!! Hard for all those who follow :)
I first heard this song from the album of the same name 30 plus years ago and it stuck in me and still is there today. Seeing this version for the first time....an absolute masterpiece and testimony to John's incredible talents. He left the world so much beautiful music.
John was made of music, he couldn't have done anything other than make this stuff. that's my definition of genius...
Some memories are special and make you smile, the memories of seeing him live do that to me...the best times
I'm in bits watching this sublime, exquisite performance, just over 3 years since your passing John. Couldn't love (& miss) you more. xx
Never too late to say that John Martyn was a True Artist who went above and beyond from the early Island years until the very end. Pure Genius
Had the priviledge to be at these Shaw Theatre gigs and was worried that Mr Gilmore would fill in all the space. It was an excellent collaboration and could not have been easy finding notes to play on standard tuned guitar when John was in CFCCGD and still keep the vibe.
Many thanks for posting.
Not really, you just use the same scale notes relevant to the key you're in, regardless of tunings
💓🌊 His voice, the guitar... oh
I don't even drink red wine but that's all I can taste when listening to this
@@YRFKDM8 damn right
The world is so alien to me as a child growing up in a civilised and secure society. This music is from the angels and so far from the rubbish of the Voice, X-Factor etc... it is an expression of the heart and the lonely heart we all have if only we admit it.....
I'll unashamedly agree and admit it! And I see that 65 others feel as you do as well (-:
♥
Share your lonely heart and it will get less lonely
What a real legend, seeing him live a few times still comes back every time I hear the amazing voice and each perfect pluck on that guitar. 😊
Pure genius, deserves a billion likes!
how amazing. reminds me of rolling ocean waves coming into the shore
Tears fall for a lost master, and I DO mean John Martyn. Such ethereal beauty here.
So sad that John left us before his time. The last time I saw him was in De Barras in Clonakilty in Ireland sometime around 04. At that stage he had lost a leg. He still blew us away. Legend.
John martyn may you rest in peace brother.
Brad Martin what is
see you after john x
RIP John and thanks for the music
Met John when he lived in Roberton in Scotland and had a right few drinks with him a long long time ago...lovely guy.
he played in lanark town hall many moons ago
Al Stewart was a (genuine) friend of his in London in the late sixties. He tells a story of meeting JM while going into a hotel in New York in the 1980s. He said "Hi John!". JM told him to "fook off ya stupid twat". He could be nasty. Great artist.
Fantastic performance
He goes directly to my soul..what a sensible artist
He evoked so much emotion with his voice.
Just stumbled upon this and watched/listened in stunned silence. Two of my favourite musicians sharing the stage! Can't get much better :)
I remember watching this on 'The Apprentice' VHS video. I had the pleasure of seeing John Martyn at Ritzy's nightclub in Aberdeen with keyboard player + drum machine in 1989. It was a tiny place. I also saw JM in Cambridge at The Junction when it was a beer stained gig venue. He had the full band, including saprano sax player and real drummer! That was a terrific gig. He was so into it playing Angeline that he could hardly speak. Such an emotional performer! I remember the 'Poland' keyboard!
The Cambridge Junction was late september 1990 and it was a fabulous gig.
The level of talent, artistry, musical beauty and sadness on display here is almost too much.
Why after so many years I now find this artist? Amazing how this all works.
He's a fortunate man. He left a Musical Legacy that is second to none.
This man still finds ways to touch me in the heart even though he’s gone. This is a sublime example of his ability to pour his soul out with his lyrics his voice and that guitar. God I miss him
If everyone had his heart, what a World it would be ... truly a One World ... God Bless you Johnny ... RIP ...
John was a fabulous guitarist, and an even better vocalist.
seen john at glasgow green 1990,runrig were playing mainstage and he was playin in a tent adjasent,,,,walking by with a cone in my hand ,,,this strange sound drew me in that night,, tent was packed he was rokin and i was blown away, that was me hooked,,me and my mate spent many a night after partying listening to the wonder,, trying wind down but still racing and your tunes carried us through perfectly until dawn ,,miss you john
Gets me every time. Just beautiful.
I saw him play live many times, one for the memorys
Some of us live like princes
Some of us live like queens
Most of us live just like me
We don't know what it means
To take our place in one world
To make our peace in one world
To make our way in one world
To have our say in one world
If you ain't got two words to say
Then I can't talk to you
No use crying, there's been no crime
I say it's just the way the wind blows
Just the name of the game
The way of the world, way of the world
Just the way of the world
Just the way of the world
So cold and lonely
Cold and lonely
Cold and lonely world
Such a cold and lonely
Cold and lonely
Cold and lonely world
It's just a cold and lonely world
It's one world, like it or not
It's one world, believe it or not
It's one world
It's one world, believe it or not
One world, like it or not
It's one world
Some of us live like princes
Some of us live like queens
Most of us live just like me
And we don't know what it means
To take our place in one world
To take our place in one world
To make our loving in one world
Make our way in one world
It's one world, one world, one world

They truly speak the same language. Amazing. Thank you. ❤️
You forgot to mention his best mate Phil Collins. Grace and Danger, Glorious Fool two of his absolute best recordings.
“If music be the food of life, play on, play on. John Martyn’s music could soothe even the most angry heart. Such a sad loss for us all. His passing was a shock we are just beginning to learn to live with.. Johnny Too Bad is looking down on us all. R.I.P., John Martyn.
That moment when Gilmour is your session musician... kidding))) R.I.P. John!!!
No words needed. Amazing. ..beyond amazing. Straight from the soul. ...straight into the soul. Wow.
sorry to be pedantic.. no words needed - why write?
So F'ing ineffable, in the words of TS Eliot, sort of.
A literal masterpiece.
Loved john. So did all the greats. These two brought out some of the best of each other here. Great show and check out the version of John Wayne. Best ever imo. Oh to have been there
John and Beverly Martyn!!! Simply sublime!!! Always loved your music and still do. Thanks to Mick H. for turning me on to this wonderful stuff!!! 🇨🇦
Boy just fucking oozed talent. Had the privilege of seeing live on a couple of occasions, greatly missed. Thanks for the legacy John.
Dear unique John, I miss you too much. Really too much...
This can't be an easy tune to play live, there are so many different colors of sound and harmonies.
Just beautiful music----
Still my favourite John Martyn track of all time. Much missed
You know Terry, If only the world could sit down and listen to the music.
Great and beautiful Live Concert by the late John Martyn and with the beautiful special participation of Master David Gilmour playing his Fender Stratocaster Guitar, all this wonder was filmed and recorded in 1990 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Love that man and his music!!!
And then there was an angel, who spoke of many things. Dreams and stories that would be true, and were real, his name was unknown to many, but known to the devoted few. And when he was gone, they carried on, listening to his words of wisdom, hoping one day, he would appear. If there is a god, and he is yours. Ask him or her, to grant us one wish. Bring John back, for one more gig.
Love Light and Peace, tot all those that believe.
Dearest John …..I miss you so much big man….you’re music was part of the sound track of my life.
Music such as this comes along only once in a life time and I’m so glad it was in mine.
Saw you only once ( Reading university….it was enough to get me hooked for life).
I never get fed up of hearing or watching this track, I've got it on cd, cassette tape, video and now dvd. Simply genius.
I still think this is pure magic when and where WTF enjoy!
Why is it we only recognise genius when it is no longer with us?ps:The bass player on this is really superb
i just love dave gilmour. that spacey sound
Great artist,I loved his music, and still do. His chill out music makes today's chill out music sound like hyperactive puppies. When he was on song his music was sublime. He was very influential . Innovator supreme
one of my favorite artists ever ! john martyn is truly a genius! and will be missed...
Wonderful, what more is needed.
Oh that’s lovely … the best version I have heard by far..
Lovely performance by both John and David.
The genius of John Martyn all the space for the soul to breathe between the drizzle and the drop .......
This sounds heartbreaking after a bottle of the finest red . So sad he has gone
Doesn`t have to be the finest either//Plonk! cheers John Martyn thanks for all the Music :)
Never forget you dear John R.I.P.
so Special so great part of my life - thx john
Just a beautiful performance !
Brilliant! Two Greats on stage doing a great song
So beautiful! Searched for Pink Floyd One World and came here, wonderful surprise! ♥
This is wonderful but I'd love to see Dave Gilmour a posthumous credit to John for 'Allons-y' from Pink Floyd's 'The Endless River'... as it's clearly an instrumental re-working of 'Grace & Danger'. John Martyn's troubled and inspired work deserves so much more appreciation.
very interesting!
The title " The endless river " was a line in a 70s or 80s Pink Floyd song ,, Not sure if that is relevant,
@@kevanbodsworth9868 the song you're talking about is high hopes:D
I've been very lucky and see john @ a small gig in Greenwich south London...was at the front with friends getting stoned on very good green...john said am liking the smell guys...he then went on to do a great performance with Danny thompson...A TRUE GENT AND PERFORMER...truly missed.....his up doing the big gig in the sky Now.
Wow - I'm transported!
Sometimes somethings so good you cant believe it's that good, and you throw it away.
A lot of creative artists have troubled lives just look back.I was lucky to see John 3 times and he was never short of amazing, unique ,inspirational and I always left vowing to set fire to my guitars. Now in later life I am learning some of his songs from various tutorials.Wow what a man .Agree he is to under rated.Love to hear you later.
A truly GREAT musician. R.I.P. John.
Now I'm gonna search 4 him with Lee Scratch Perry and Eric Clapton. Fantastic post. Thnx.
I'm going to play "May You Never" as one of my two numbers as my contribution to our virtual folk club tomorrow (Home Stage UK). I realise, listening to this astonishing version of "One World", that if you try to play like John Martyn you've got no chance. However, if you channel some of his spirit you can achieve absolutely anything. God bless you geezer, Love never dies.
Awesome person, never will you ever hear this music ever again. ❤
Such a smooth, open sound - beautiful beyond words. Flawless performance.
Such a blissful pairing of sensual/sensory musical sensibilities.
Could there be a trippier combination of musical magic, i havnt touched drugs in years and im out of me head listening to this.
Magnificent.
Absolutely perfect and absolutely magical! 🕉
i'm floating in space
saw him twice many moons ago at low key gigs - for me he’s right up there as in soul toutching masterclass - hits me where others barely touch the surface
You have echoed my thoughts ,had the pleasure of seeing him in Edinburgh .Hits my Soul every time
Aye he always gets me - he played a couple of wee hippy fests in the Scottish Borders in the 70’s - happy days
This! well said.
Saw him once play in my local pub back in the 80's he was smashed but no body appeared to notice
Folk Club above a pub in the Old Town, Hastings, just down the road from his home, c 1973, trying out his new album 'Solid Air' for live performance, for a room full of spellbound local hippies - or freaks, as we liked to call ourselves in those days... :-)
To think I sneeked in the back and watched this from behind the monitor desk!
Could never do that these days, great memories.
A true Giant. I first saw him in 1968?, QEH, supporting Fotheringay, he had a Yamaha Fg180 and an echo plex.
Blew me away. And then he strode through the foyer, barefoot, and seemed to encapsulate everything you'd want to be.
Died too young
It doesn't get much better than this. JM produced music that transcended the genres of pop music. This is naked soul music.
I remember John handing out his spliff to the audience in the Victoria Halls in Hanley Stoke on Trent for a quick couple of puffs and then he took it back. Early '80's, wonderful memories.
