    I complement you on your reading, you really channeled through words how the alien feels. I am fascinated by this short story and how It totally subverts the POV of the movie without contradicting or ruining the plot. It gives a very thoughtful and deep character study of the Alien and how it thinks, not much removed from how we humans view and not comprehend different species or how through history we have regarded different races.

    Joining all the fans to share the sentiment: THIS is the best reading of this story I've heard ! You not only read it as one would the shopping list (like most do ! ) you gave "The Thing" true character and personality with all the pauses, the moments of recollection, all the utter disgust and disbelief by the fact that we offshoots "don't take communion"D: ! Thank you for sharing your talents with us and voicing this piece which is also a masteclass in writing.
    I don't know if you're already a voice actor but I def imagine you working to create audiobooks for platforms like audible !

      Thanks so much for your supportive comment! I've been considering voice acting more seriously as time goes by; I never considered it more than a hobby until I started uploading videos. Two of them were copyright claimed by Stephen King when they got over 10k views, which was discouraging, but I want to continue pursuing this avenue of performance nonetheless.

    That ending was infinitely more disturbing than I anticipated. A whole new take on the 'alien coloniser' trope.

    • @GRasputin91
      @GRasputin91 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't feel like this is "colonizing" in the sense of Europeans taking over Native American land. This is the joining of biomass together, the complete sharing of everything--mind, resources, emotions. This isnt colonization, it's the bringing of mortal flesh into an immortal godlike being. Colonization involves stealing, mistreatment of natives, destruction and hoarding of resources. This is exactly the opposite of that, even if the assimilation process was a bit violent at first

    The ending to this one always hits such a note of alien melancholy.

    • @kenhunt6659
      @kenhunt6659  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good way of putting it...something like what we call melancholy but tinged with something inhuman.

      I definitely don’t want that salvation raped into me… jus sayen…. The short story was amazing! It was like the Rambo movie if played by an alien instead of Sylvester Stallone!

    Mr. Hunt, that reading was very good. Sublime, really.
    Understated and subtle yet with such impact. Wow, you could be an actor, I think.

      Thanks so much! I absolutely love this story and was lucky enough to meet its creator when he gave a talk years ago. Also, if you listen to this playlist of the OST for Carpenter's adaptation of The Thing, it goes pretty well with my reading (starting from the second video): th-cam.com/video/stzS_Snc2Zw/w-d-xo.html

      I always wanted to act but found the Hollywood system unattractive. I did a lot of acting in my late teens...I've been meaning to get involved with a local theater group for ages now; I'm finishing a PhD in literary criticism and, once that monkey's off my back, getting back into acting is on my long to-do list, lol. Thanks again for your supportive comment. It means a great deal to me.

    So….it’s the movie The Thing, but from the point of view of the creature, then? Yep…. even the names match. Well, that was a pretty cool idea! 😀

    I usually can't abide the overwrought "spooky campfire" voice. Just read the goddamn book. If it's spooky, we'll figure it out.
    But you have an excellent spooky campfire voice. Please consider Lovecraft.

    Of all the audiobook versios of this I found on TH-cam, this version is my favorite. The others just didn't have a voice or the channelling of the feelings The Thing had in my opinion.
    The only nitpick about this is that it's a bit too slow so I listened on x1.2 speed and a few places had a very audible exhale directly into the mic that made that "BOOM" sound which was very painful if listened on headphones.

    That’s an interesting take on the story, or rather the film, you’d have to be familiar with the film otherwise I don’t think you’d get it - but I am and I did get it, and I enjoyed it ✌🏻

      Imagine you find a world that has life but they only seem like drones, carrying out tasks but not thinking for themselves. You might call them soulless. Then it find that all the drones had been enslaved by a helpless mass of tissue ordering them around.
      That is how the thing sees us because it is used to seeing the intelligence in cells, not a centralized network, and it makes no sense for a clutch of tissue to be assisting it's will over the cells.
      Also, when it comes to nutritional demands the brain is more of a match for a tumor or cancer then it is for normal body cells.

      Unfortunately yes...I got a better mic after this, and that better mic broke recently, so now I'm without a decent pop filter once again. Ugh.

      @@kenhunt6659 my "unbreakable" mic just broke too, so i know how it goes. They say audio is more important than video, for these podcast informational type videos, which are awesome. I consume them continuously.
