  • I have a 2000 ford excursion and the steering wheel was not straight when the wheels were. This was an easy fix even for me. =) thanks for watching, I hope it helps! Thanks to my wife for watching the steering wheel while I adjusted the thing underneath the rig, and letting me know when it was good to go!

      Yep that is me for sure, 7 kids, =). Thanks for the kind words, some people are kinda mean about background noise in some of my videos, so I appreciate your kindness. =) I would say I am just a regular Joe, I wish I had more mechanical experience, like those guys that grow up putting old cars together, but never had that chance. I kinda get how things work though.

    So, assuming your alignment was correct, after turning just the driver side tie rod end, wouldn't it throw your alignment off? Seems like you should turn the passenger side the same amount of turns to retain alignment of wheels?

      I'm getting so tired of dumb mechanics. I'd have taken it right back to that shop. Especially knowing how easy it is. Why would an alignment shop not fix the steering wheel straight? Did the same to me but I never had the time to get back to it. This is great. I hope I can get this to work this weekend.

      Rob Ponch some other people who probably know way more than I do have commented that it does not effect your alignment at all, and I am inclined to believe them. hmmm perhaps there is another thing that controls the steering wheel alignment besides that part I was turning? That is a puzzler since it did straighten it initially.... perhaps try again and mark the threaded bolt with a Sharpie or some pen to see if it moves once you have adjusted it? Perhaps it slipped or somehow went back to where it was? hmmm....

    • @ScaryTalkingHead
      @ScaryTalkingHead  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I am really not sure. I would take a look underneath and see if you see something similar to what is in the video. I would imagine that there may be several things that could cause the steering to be off like this. I only know this one way to fix it. I am sorry I could not be more helpful =(

    • @301steady
      @301steady 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ah yes, the classic - alignment is good. It probably is. Really busy alignment shops are asked by customers to do an alignment check; so, they do; and, it's good; but, you didn't ask for a steering wheel adjustment; you asked for an alignment. Yes, Mr Robles, next time, ask for a Steering Wheel Adjustment and maybe a BACKLASH Adjustment. Ask them to adjust the Drag Link and the slop in the steering box. Just be advised that most shops won't have a special tool to adjust the steering box slop. th-cam.com/video/8X9xpioehv4/w-d-xo.html In this video, the guy discusses the two nuts he welded together, for adjusting the slop or Backlash. If you're ok with the slop; then, you can just adjust the drag link, like in this video. BE VERY CAREFUL NOT TO ADJUST THE CONNECTING ROD. It's easy to confuse the two. Ask me how I know. HA HA HA. Just take your time. Make sure you are doing it right before you start.

      @@ScaryTalkingHead I looked at my 2000 Ford E-150 a little bit ago, figured it was the same, gonna work on it over the next day, and I do not have that adjustment on the drag link. I have 2 adjusters like that on the tie rod on each side. I'm guessing to not mess up toe alignment, I'm gonna have to turn each one, the same amount. Hope that works. I'm at work in the middle of the night and I went out and sprayed them both with WD-40. Gonna spray them again before I go home.
      I'm not sure what they did on the last alignment as they left the stupid thing about 35 degrees uncentered steering wheel. Really messes up the turn signals. Its like I would have to remove the pitman arm and reinstall it about the same amount but I think it would be difficult to get that dang thing off. I did it on a 89 E-150 but I took the steering box out before removing the Pittman arm as the box was shot. Took 10 turns of the steering wheel to barely turn the van. My uncle gave me his steering box from his Town Car. Luckily I checked it before install as it rotated the opposite way! Box looked exactly the same. Worst yet I probably would have drove it that way rather than replace it again. LOL

      Well of course mine, being a van, always makes things much harder than anything else. So some Joker at some point decided to change one of the nuts do a different size. All in all eventually went to the auto parts store three times for a different tool. I had to use one of those fighting type sockets because I stripped out the nut and then of course I didn't have a socket that was one in that would go over the biting socket that is just a bunch of baloney. So anyway I get the four bolts loose on the two adjusters and I can't turn those things so I'm going to have to get a pipe wrench to help me turn those. So much fun. Not

    This is the total wrong way to do this now your toe is out of wack.You have to turn both sides equally to maintain the front end toe.Steering wheel may be straight but you will be burning your tires out.Think about it you only turned one side in or out so you are either toed out or toed in!

      hmmm is there another way then to get the steering wheel in snyc. with the wheels? Also, do you think it is taking it out of toe enough to burn out the tires significantly?

      The adjustment he was using doesn't do anything to the alignment it only adjusts steering wheel angle. The adjustment on the right hand side of the screen adjusts the total toe.

      He's confusing the "Connecting Rod" with the "Drag Link" aka "Tie Rod".
      Adjusting the Drag Link won't affect the toe.
      By the way - the technical term you were looking for is SLEEVE. You adjusted the Drag Link SLEEVE.
      Now, if you adjusted the Connecting Rod SLEEVE, Robert would be correct and you would throw the toe out of whack; but, you didn't; so, you're ok. If you're worried about the toe, take it to an alignment shop.

    You know you’re dealing with a vehicle that has power steering so making an adjustment to the steering will is not necessarily going to fix the problem step one with the power steering equipped vehicle is to relieve the power steering pressure on the system

      ahh I see, thanks for the information. This did help a lot though, my steering wheel was horribly off =)

      Scary Talking Head you’re not in good shape until you relieve power steering pressure and re align until perfect (test drive with no power steering) then supply pressure..

      You can drain the fluid then take it and get professionally aligned then fill it back up.

    You're turning the joint clockwise or counterclockwise to turn the steering wheel left or right. That works better with my wife and daughters instead of right or left. Righty tighty lefty loosy don't work with them either. I. Don't. Know. Why. The boys, not a problem. Go figure.
