      Jump in homelessness as Australia’s rental crisis pushes ‘overwhelmed system to breaking point’
      Vulnerable people and regional areas hardest hit, report shows, as experts demand urgent action to increase affordable housing
      The latest Australian Homelessness Monitor found the number of people seeking homelessness services because they couldn’t afford rent rose 27% over the past four years.
      Peak bodies are calling for urgent investment in social housing as new research shows rental stress is the fastest growing cause of homelessness in Australia.
      The latest Australian Homelessness Monitor, released on Monday, found in the past four years there was a 27% increase in people seeking help at homelessness services because they couldn’t afford rent.
      Regional Australia was hit particularly hard, with homelessness surging by 13% since 2018-2019, more than double the rate of state capitals.
      “There aren’t enough affordable homes, and millions of Australians are paying the price - including families, women fleeing domestic violence, and older people,” Azize said.
      Azize said the long-term strategy of incentivising private investors to build affordable housing was “completely failing”.

    To be clear in case you don’t know we Aussies can have guns. It’s really not hard to get a shotgun or bolt action rifle. It’s just paperwork and time. So the whole “Australia banned the guns” thing isn’t true. We just made it harder and easier for the police to track you if you do something wrong. Which the US really should do.

    • @namonamo494
      @namonamo494 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      guess you pretty much have same range on rules as eu
      background chck, minimum of training, not allowed if crime record and such?

    • @chrisdef15
      @chrisdef15 ปีที่แล้ว

      Pretty much. Not sure what type of guns you are allowed. But anyone without a serious criminal record and some type of use for it can get a shotgun or bolt action rifle. You just need to show you will be using it for hunting or sports shooting.
      Even pistols and semi auto aren’t that hard if you’re a a farmer or professional hunter. Aussies who aren’t law enforcement or military own guns like semi auto AR’s.
      You just need a reason. I don’t think it’s that big a deal.
      And fun can be a reason. Join a gun club. You can get a shotgun or bolt action easily.
      But it’s hard enough the average nutcase won’t buy one when they get mad and go kill people.

    • @chrisdef15
      @chrisdef15 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Should add yes you need to pass a safety test. And buy a licence. Not expensive. And the guns serial number is registered to you. And when not in use needs to be locked in a safe.
      All those things add up too if someone responsible want a gun it just takes a few weeks to sort it out.
      But it makes it very hard for some “criminal” to get one.
      Of course it’s still possible. We just had 2 police killed the other day. But it was so rare it’s all the news has talked about.

      Americans quickly hear ‘gun control’ and assume ‘ban’, which isn’t the case.
      Additional rules to above - You always have to have your guns stored securely and separate from ammunition. They cannot be stored loaded. You can’t have a history of serious mental illness. You can’t have a weapon ‘for fun’, you have to have a legitimate reason, such as pest control or sports shooting. High level security can have open carry licenses, but regular citizens can’t.
      But growing up in the country, all my mates had guns and went hunting and to the shooting range etc. you can legally shoot guns that are on the prohibited list if you visit a gun range. You can’t own them, but you can pay to shoot them at the range. My mates have shot those massive desert eagle things and elephant rifles. It’s really not that different here other than the complete lack of fear when walking the street or going to school lol

    New Zealand had a similar situation. Because New Zealand usually ranks top 3 safest countries in the world, an Australian came over to massacre 51 people to show that nobody is safe anywhere. From the date of the massacre it took 3 weeks to draft, introduce, debate and enact into law new sweeping gun reforms. Not 3 months, 3 weeks!

      @@fedugalerreacts No, it's not official name. It's Special Intervention Unit (SIU) in English but in Finnish it's poliisin Valmiusyksikkö Karhu, commonly known as Karhu-ryhmä (Bear Squad). They're what you get when you mix SWAT and FBI HRT together.
      They spend 5/10 of their work time training, 1/10 of work time is spent in special operations and remaining 4/10 they do normal police work in normal police uniform but you will never know which ones are in special unit. So, they kinda are ninja police.

    Pay attention and vote. It's maybe 30 minutes out of your day on average. That's a very low price to pay for freedom imo.
