Gotta be the best instructor I've seen so far. The way he speaks clearly, informative and visually must be his greatest strength when teaching newcomers.
Thanks for sharing, Interesting to follow along. Not nit picking, but your secondary containers need to be labeled. The antifreeze looks like Gator Aid.
Hello from Finland. I am a senior electronic maintenance engineer and found this really interesting. I learnet some good stuff too. It’s a real honor to meet a person who does his job well.
As far as the rocks, I watch a lot of Hobo channels. Some of the guys grab rocks to defend themselves from people trying to do them harm. One of my favorite channels is “runoutonarail” I have never seen any of these guys ever vandalize anything on those cars, sometimes they ride the tank cars and sit in that lid. City Boy here watching from Dunedin,Florida. USA.
This was really interesting, never realized all that is involved with your industry, and I have only watched one video. Seems a small issue gets the best of you - please try to look past something like that as it only shortens your life. You do the best you can and that is great, sign of a perfectionist, but don't let the laziness of others ruin your day. I see the worst in my peers all the time but have to let it go and just do the best job I can and that is what gives me enjoyment. Good luck!
Should never take the attitude that it's not your problem if something goes wrong they (insurance company and human resources) will always try to blame someone Particularly under strict liability laws because someone has to be found at fault
What that gentleman never mentioned is finding bird nest in there. Those cars can be in storage for months or years. Some smart birds (not cute, black, short tail) in nesting season, with their beak pivot the side trap small cover to go nesting in there. A safe paradise for their chicks. No rain or predation. Always funny to see them in and out. Who said that tank cars are environement hazard ? 😂😊
I now have knowledge on how to test things on a Dot 111 tanker car. I do hope I get to use this knowledge some day. Mainly because this was fascinating.
Excellent video. Always wondered how these were set up. I would suggest you get a different container for the glycol instead of a Gatorade bottle. You know what could happen if your tray is left unattended. You could put a piece of electrical tape vertically on the bottle and spray paint it. Remove the tape and you would have a window for the glycol level and it would not look like a drink bottle. Or you could use a clear dish detergent bottle that would not resemble a drink bottle.
stainless steel vs stainless steel = galling. the stainless makes it so there is much less oxidation. when that minimal oxidation is broken away from the surface from friction, the steel sticks to itself because there is no oxygen at that exact spot to create oxidation layer.
Really enjoyed this video. Never knew what was under one of those tank car domes. I sometimes see tank car domes painted with a red or green stripe around them. What does this represent?
I do not know what these stripes are for. Since some of these cars are owned by refineries, perhaps they use paint stripes to help quickly identify which specific commodity they want loaded into them. Thanks for the comment.
Generally it takes a little over 1 hour to offload the liquid from one car and less than two hours to offload 4 cars at once. Vapor recovery takes longer especially during warm weather, so about 1 hour 20 minutes for one car and 2 hours 30 minutes or more for 4 cars. Regarding your earlier comment about hobos, straight up vandalism doesn't seem to be their style from what I have seen.
Appreciate the video. I noticed many times you use the adjustable wrench incorrectly. You should never put pressure on the adjustable part of the jaw. That can cause a tool failure and possible injury. Flip the wrench over so you’re always pulling the solid part of the jaw.
Thanks for sharing. You are correct in what you said. I do occasionally use it backwards, but if I ever have to use a cheater pipe to remove an overly tight plug, I do use it correctly for the safety reasons you mentioned. Thanks for pointing this out, helpful comments like this is how we improve.
I had a bad float on a propylene car last week. It engaged but didn't rise. It's not fun when this occurs. 2nd time now. Unfortunately supervisors don't understand the atominy of LPG car's.
Interesting. In general, what's the process for this specialty, is it OJT or other classroom training, and what background does an individual need to be hired?
Being mechanically inclined is important, as is being able to read, write and do basic math at a high school level. 49CFR states that we need to have certified training in both a general sense but also function specific for every job/function we do. Security and rail/rail car training. The code allows all training to be either in-house or from an outside testing company. All training has to be followed up with testing and certification of completion. We use the Certified Employee Training Program from the Propane Gas Association, Rail Safe Training, code training through Alan Budleski, along with on the job training and self study. New employees have 90 days to complete training and all employees must have refresher training every three years. Hope this helps, thanks.
Now that was a cool video I've never seen anything like this That's really really cool. You have a really interesting kind of fun job that's something I wouldn't mind doing but I bet it ain't no fun when the weather's not so good what else do you do?
Thank you, glad you found it interesting. Weather extremes are a challenge, but I have found them to be less challenging than working in a factory. What else do I do? We load transport trucks and occasionally smaller delivery trucks, but no retail sales.
Okay so the real cars come in you offload them into your big tanks and then you load semi trucks and then those drivers take the product to places around the state I'm assuming to load their tanks so smaller delivery trucks can deliver them to customers.
Why don’t they just put a magnet on the top of the level gauge. All you would need would be a stick with steel on the end to retrieve it? Oh wait the rail industry doesn’t let innovation get in the way of a good tradition
Gotta be the best instructor I've seen so far. The way he speaks clearly, informative and visually must be his greatest strength when teaching newcomers.
You are kind to say so, thank you.
All that safety and antifreeze in a marked Gatorade bottle
Try to steal a drink of his. It will be the last time someone would think of stealing a drink from him. Lol
Thanks for sharing, Interesting to follow along. Not nit picking, but your secondary containers need to be labeled. The antifreeze looks like Gator Aid.
Thank you, you are correct about the bottles. I address this in video #27 at 20:20.
Can you pass the ketchup oh tastes like used compressor oil ughh

Suppose to be hand tight. Stresses it, gripes about it. Then uses a wrench to tighten it!😂🎉
Very informative thank you.

Very informative and good general knowledge of operating around a railcar.
Thank you
Your Propane Insights adds insight to the workings of the American railroad. That was a genuine heritage.
Thanks

Pressure was 285 PSI. Not a great feeling, springs were fully compressed. Supervisor told me we couldn't send it out until we got a gauge on it. Lol
That is frustrating. Glad there are people like you out there who catch AND report problems.Thank you.
I love the mustard bottle for dispensing oil.
It works!
I deliver these to 2 facilities just outside houston.
Thank you for sharing about your work.

This is how you teach the new guy how to properly do the job. Not some stupid animated video that corporate would probably prefer.....

@@nightrider6769 Yes, you are correct.
I'm slowly but surely getting through your videos and I find them all very very interesting you do only propane cards right?
@@nightrider6769 Yes, only propane.
do you know a " Hank Hill"? I hear he is huge in the propane world .
The man, the myth, the legend.
Is any of this stuff non-sparking? How has it not all blown up yet?
While propane is flammable, its characteristics are such that non-sparking tools are not required. Thanks for the comment.
Because there are no ignition sources nearby and they ground the car before they climb on them
He sounds like such a dad!
Note to hobos finding full green Gatorade bottle....do not drink !
I see a safety issue: putting a toxic substance(antifreeze) in an unlabeled drinking container.
I address this in video 27 at the 20:20 mark. I also address this is several comment replies.
Great, if there is ever a zombie apocalypse, I'm all set, if I remember.
Never use oil on pressurized oxygen fittings / caps.
True. Thanks for sharing.
interesting
Thanks
Instead of a crescent wrench get an 8 point socket & ratchet
Well, if an 8 point works for square headed plugs, it might be helpful for some of these rounded off hex head plugs. Thanks for sharing.
If they make an 8 point impact socket it would be even better than a regular 8 point
Pencil? What the hell is that?
do they still make them??????? and erasers???????????
rear speaker
Yes, some jobs require it as it's easily erasable than pens.
@@specialed6357 just being sarcastic, when they stop making pencils, I'll start looking for the 4 horsemen in the sky.

was that glycol in a gateraid bottle? did it have a hazcomm sticker? safety safety safety

Antifreeze in a Gatorade bottle is also a major violation. But I suppose if it’s in a cucumber Gatorade bottle no one knows
What a quaint system.... When was this designed.... The last century?
Thanks for sharing. This century, although last century was only 24.5 years ago. Time flies.
Keep it simple. No need to over engineer it.
