@AT Productions Of course, That's why it was kept in. George could have easily ADR'd it out with something else or muted it but he clearly chose to keep it in for a reason.
The choice to have Han stamp on Jabba's tail is so weird. It puts Jabba in a real submissive position, like Jabba's the one who's supposed to be scared of Han, not vice versa.
It was because of a technical difficulty, when George Lucas was adding cgi Jana the hutt to this scene he realized that Harrison Ford was walking around jabba and his tail was in the way so he had to add the sound effect
@@Dutch_van_der_linde939 well yes obviously seeing as how both him and Chewie were surrounded by Jabba and his goons, one of which was Boba Fett. Perhaps scared isn't the word but this scene feels very out of place and does not fit in very well. It's better that it was cut out.
I think that’s sort of why they updated it in the 2004 version to make Jaba look more angry that he stepped on his tail. Hutts are known to be greedy so he quickly forgets when Han offers a bigger percentage. But they also adjusted the way he threatens Han at the end with a bounty look more menacing.
The impression I received from Jabba in ROTJ is that he's a sedentary being that doesn't really go anywhere. All the field work is done by his emissaries and enforcers while he resides in his palace. It's therefore bizarre to see him leading a search for Han himself.

I was so excited to see this scene when I went to the Cinema in 1997 because I've read the novelization of New Hope and this scene was in there but it wasn't in the original movie. Now come to think of it - I do agree it's actually better that this scene was left out because if they only talk about Jabba but he's not there, it makes him feel more powerful like he has this almighty reach all over the place + there's a suspense building up towards the 3rd movie. I was surprised people were so mad about the rereleases of the Star Wars movies. I thought most of the additions were pretty awesome. In particular I loved what they did with Empire and the Cloud City. The only thing I thought was dumb and unnecessary was that replacement of the band in the Jabba Palace. The original band was better.
I liked that they resurrected a scene that didn't make into the original cut. But it's not the scene I wanted to see most of all. When I was a kid in the 1970's, my school's library had a "Star Wars" picture book. It told the story, but had huge photos from the movie. One photo I most remember was of Luke and Biggs on Tatooine, and Biggs is saying goodbye to Luke. That would have made Luke's reunion with Biggs, and Biggs's death in the Death Star battle, more meaningful. Even more meaningful when you add that Luke's other wingman, Wedge Antilles, was the son of the late Captain Antilles, the pilot of the ship Vader captured at the beginning of the movie.

I think Jabba and Han got along very well to the point Jabba did not punish Han for stepping on his tail. Despite this, Jabba gave Han the chance to redeem himself by paying money (the cost the cargo was worth). Han tried to pay back but pirates who worked for Jabba stole the money Han had when he arrived in Tatooine.
The House of Mouse bought the rights. It's been a mess ever since. As a major Han Solo fan..why not give us the "few maneuvers" from the Tatooine escape?
‘97 will always be my favorite. I know ‘04 looks more accurate, but I’ve always had a special connection to the 97 version, because I saw it in the theater as a kid, and back then I was blown away at this new scene in ANH.
I dunno. It compliments the puppet by showing up and behaving in a way not possible for the puppet. It places Jabba in the first film in Luke’s general neighborhood. Before that, from the perspective of seeing ROTJ for the first time, one would be forgiven for thinking Jabba lived on an entirely separate sand planet, as there’s so many creatures in Jabba’s palace that didn’t appear in the first film, like the Gamorians, the Twileks, the Rancor and the Sarlacc. This Jabba is seen out in the open, moving about like the slug that he is while keeping the mouth and eyes moving in as much a way like the puppet as they could get it at the time. I just rationalized it back in 1997 as what Jabba would look like standing up and moving around as opposed to lounging as he does in ROTJ.
It's extra funny since he clearly holds a position of honor decades earlier at the Boonta Eve Classic. Then he makes this one appearance in between those two scenes with no pomp or fanfare.
They should delete this scene, because it's useless and reveals Jabba too soon in addition to make him less intimidating. Instead of this scene, they should add the scenes with Biggs on Tatooine.
More than anything else, it's just boring. It brings the whole departure from Mos Eisley sequence to a screeching halt for a minute and a half just for a dull dialogue scene that you're just kind of awkwardly waiting to get through
They should've never added jabbas. Listen to the star wars radio drama. They send Heater to represent jabba and he was very cunning, he reminded me of Dryden Voss. A real smooth talker
Plus why would they have the actor wear such a fancy get up? Anytime they do that kind of effect they are usually dressed in like a leotard and the footage looks notably rough
the 1997 edit was so bad. He didn't even look like he was supposed to. But the whole scene should never have been added. Han stepping on his tail was so dumb.
What they should've done instead is cut that part of Solo walking behind and replace it with a close up of Jabba's face and have Solo walking IN FRONT of Jabba from left to right in the frame, using someone else dressed as Solo. Once Solo gets to Jabba's left side, it would've cut back to original footage (zoomed out) with H.Ford . In the close up, you wouldn't be able to see H. Ford's face anyway, hence this trick would've worked.
Jabba could have rotated around to avoid getting his dear tail hurt, now that they clearly have to film that exact moment when Han goes to the other side.
Han stepping on his tail is so stupid. They could have just cut to a shot of Boba Fett looking at them, possible raising his rifle slightly as Han's tone gets a bit more aggressive with Jabba. When they cut back, Han could be on the other side, but it would just appear as though he had walked in front of him off camera, rather than on his tail.
Lucas should have never put this scene back in. The cgi was horrible in 1997 and only minimally better in 2004. Someone should redo this scene again now that the technology has so drastically improved.
A pointless scene that also feels out of character. A mob boss (who can barely move) exposing himself in the open during the day? No way. Jabba's personality also feels too upbeat here. That - and stepping on his tail - diminishes his imposing presence we see in RETURN OF THE JEDI.
People who complain that the cgi Jabba looks fake are being silly. Whether it's with puppetry or computers, it will always be fake, since the character is ultimately not real. I personally don't see any difference between a puppet creature or a cgi creature. Plus, the puppet from Episode VI took a lot of effort to build and operate and would've been immobile for this scene. People will argue that puppets look physical, which they are, but when I see what are supposed to be aliens being portrayed with puppetry in newer star wars stuff, I cannot help but be reminded that I am seeing a puppet. It might've worked in the original trilogy at the time, but just because it did then, doesn't mean it will again. Star Wars is a Space Fantasy. It's not supposed to be realistic. It's an example of a Modern Myth.
@@MrHalohunter24 Yeah. Makes sense. I still would love to see those few extra seconds of original footage. Just to see the empty space where they put him in.
This should have just been a deleted “experimental” scene and not added back into the movie. It’s like during the 2000’s Lucas lost his damn mind and nitpicked with things that didn’t need to be bothered at all.
When Star Wars "fans/purists" say they prefer the original unaltered films, it means they would rather have had the weird Irish guy Jabba. (Along with the reflective tape light sabers, the chimpeye Emperor, and the David Prowse voiced Vader)
@MrHalohunter24 I know. It's more of a mockery of the fans who get so bent out of shape over edits in Star Wars, not realizing that Lucas was changing the film even in it's initial theatrical run.
God the 2004 version looks so tacky, who the hell saw that god awful tail step and thought, “yeah that’s fine”.?! And the human being line at the end makes zero sense with the CGI slug version of Jabba.
Han is clearly being sarcastic, at least in this new context of the scene, just like how a sound effect was added to the Stormtrooper who whacked his head into the door. You really think George would have left that line in if he didn't want it there? It's mean to be ironic humor.
The 1997 version is worse, so much clipping and odd lighting makes it clear that the CGI creature is not there. Similar problems with the 2004 version, they should have had made Jabba stand further away. The stepping on the tail is just odd, ultimately they should have kept the original, it is not jarring visually.
I have two questions about at the 2004 one. Why the hell are there 3 greedos in the background when he just got shot 30 seconds ago. And why did boba fett looked directly into the camera 4:25
Seeing boba fett and Jabba the hut in episode 4, is like seeing ((Darth Tyranus and General Grievous in episode 1))!? Or seeing(( Darth Sidious and General pride in episode 7))!? You know those characters exist in that time period but it just feels weird that there Officially in the movie.🤔

They should’ve just cut out the part where Han calls Jabba a “wonderful human being”
love RotJ, but this scene I found better than the CGI reworked edition.
The completely disjointed inclusion of Boba Fett bothers me more.
Ah yah dude is a good day 2 be in hear my old friend..
Love how absolutely unnecessary Boba Fett was. Just stops dead center and stares at the camera just to really sell… that he’s there
Lucas should have never put this scene back in. The cgi was horrible in 1997 and only minimally better in 2004. Someone should redo this scene again now that the technology has so drastically improved.
1997 CGI Jabba makes a weird noise when his tail is stepped on.
2:07 WHAT
My poor crush
The 2004 version is the best.
Agreed
“Han, muh boogie…”
You forgot to go to the disco with me. I hear they’re playing Lapti Nek
I'd marry jabba
A pointless scene that also feels out of character.
A mob boss (who can barely move) exposing himself in the open during the day? No way.
Jabba's personality also feels too upbeat here. That - and stepping on his tail - diminishes his imposing presence we see in RETURN OF THE JEDI.
exposing himself? he's surrounded by more thugs and the greatest bountyhunter in the galaxy, he's propably just as save as in his palace.
Exposing? In episode I he freaking commands the pod race, he is the most powerful being on Tatooine
My god. I am glad I only have 4K77 in my collection (In addition to Laserdisc and Pre-Special edition VHS). Lucas was a nutcase in 1997.
They should not have even bothered to put Jabba in the special edition in the first place - it was better to wait to reveal him in return of the jedi.
Was Boba Fett always part of the scene? I'm trying to find out but all videos of the original scene on TH-cam cut out too early to tell.
He was not. He was added in for the first CGI version.
@@MrHalohunter24 Yeah. Makes sense. I still would love to see those few extra seconds of original footage. Just to see the empty space where they put him in.
He wasn’t. He was edited in for the CGI version.
Boba Fett at the end:
"Yeah... I'm here... Do I get a line or what?!?"
0:23 is that Norm Peterson from Cheers ?
This should have just been a deleted “experimental” scene and not added back into the movie. It’s like during the 2000’s Lucas lost his damn mind and nitpicked with things that didn’t need to be bothered at all.
So distracting and out of place it's atrocious. Maybe there's a reason this scene was cut, George.
George wanted to cut it in 1977, Marcia and Ford wanted it in in the og release
2:07 - Why my mom called hi "Jabba The Butt"!
Never noticed the insertion of Boba in that scene
2:07 😂 I get laughs from Han Solo stepping on Jabba’s tail.
My poor Jabba
Where I can watch 1997 version?
When Star Wars "fans/purists" say they prefer the original unaltered films, it means they would rather have had the weird Irish guy Jabba.
(Along with the reflective tape light sabers, the chimpeye Emperor, and the David Prowse voiced Vader)
Jabba wasn’t in the original version of ANH and Prowse never voiced Vader.
@MrHalohunter24
I know.
Han is simply flattering Jabba in a sarcastic manner. Han has always had a sense of humor using sarcasm.
Han is clearly being sarcastic, at least in this new context of the scene, just like how a sound effect was added to the Stormtrooper who whacked his head into the door. You really think George would have left that line in if he didn't want it there? It's mean to be ironic humor.
2:07 I died 😂
My poor big sexy jabba I'd protect him
The 1997 version is worse, so much clipping and odd lighting makes it clear that the CGI creature is not there. Similar problems with the 2004 version, they should have had made Jabba stand further away.
The stepping on the tail is just odd, ultimately they should have kept the original, it is not jarring visually.
3:20 why is greedo on the background lol
The scene from 1997 seems more natural than the one from 2004, especially when Solo walks behind Jabba and steps on his tail.
I have two questions about at the 2004 one. Why the hell are there 3 greedos in the background when he just got shot 30 seconds ago. And why did boba fett looked directly into the camera 4:25
Jesus Jabba looks hideous in this movie
Which version?
I guess not all the new edits were bad. 97 Jabba… yeesh
There's a newer version and Jabba is a hologram.
i think the original scene should've been left in. we deserve jolly fat irish Jabba
Seeing boba fett and Jabba the hut in episode 4, is like seeing ((Darth Tyranus and General Grievous in episode 1))!? Or seeing(( Darth Sidious and General pride in episode 7))!? You know those characters exist in that time period but it just feels weird that there Officially in the movie.🤔
personally, as a giant green slug, I was offended by this depiction of my species.
Why did they change it?
Well with how manny times the movie has been changed it’s not a surprise

True*
Why, do you miss 1997 Jabba? (1:20)
Where did you get the 1997 footage?
Harmys 1997 release
Didn't Lucas show it in the behind the scenes extra?
I wish corridor crew would react to this.
Check out 237 the lasy word he says is a real word in Finnish, meaning "s**t". Was someone having a laugh? 🤣
