@@MaximeCholley I am attempting to program this in Addictive Drums 2, and since this video is one of the only great quality covers, I'm coming back to it and watching very closely

Wow! That was killer dude! I love that opening groove. I was searching for a drum video where I could try and work it out, looks like I found it. Your snare sounds awesome too 🔥🔥🔥
Hey!! Thanks a lot for the comment! The snare is a 14" Tama Starclassic birch/bubinga, definitely a nice one. Let me know if you need help figuring the drum part out!
and it is great to see and hear drum covers that aren't half-assed. you can tell you took your time and practiced this one and you deserve every amount of kudos you get.

Wow! Have not seen a drummer with such "LOW" cymbals in a long time! Only makes sense though, as far as time consumption! Nick from the band Spocks Beard is the only other that I am aware of! Great time signature!
Oh man that was absolutely insane!!! This is probably one of the best covers I'll ever seen so far. I can't even imagine how much time did it take for you to get to play this song, because of the difficulty and all the variations. I can't help but congratulate you man, that was really nice to watch :)
17" HHX Legacy's just amazing ! Not too quiet at all, it's one of my favorite cymbals and can be played in rock, jazz even metal context !! I have an 18" HHX Evolution too, and I find it great for rock/metal but It's a bit large for playing pop or jazz. I don't really know 18" HHX studio, but HHX are basically great cymbals ! My advice, you should try those cymbals before buying it ! This way you can feel if they're made for you ! (No prob mate !)
Thanks !! Well, what took me a lot of time was to write the drum score. You know, as I wanted to be precise and play as much as possible what Gavin was playing. And it was a good exercise to write down these kind of weird grooves ;) I'd say It took me 2 or 3 days of work, but divided on a month.. When I had time, I worked on it...
Hey Emiliano ! Thanks for the kind words ! If I remember it well, the sticking must be something like : (R+K) LRRLK RLRR LRLLK Tell me if you can get it ! ;)
As for the main attraction in this video, I guess this is a good place to ask: Is the verse part a 4/4 beat that Gavin plays very complicated, or as I suspect, a 7 meter with the hi-hat and snare work displaced in a way that makes it sound like 4/4-ish? It's a strange and fascinating beat to say the least. 🙂
Thanks for your comment! This is a perspective question, and you it's always hard to be certain, unless you wrote the song yourself. Here's my guess: The drum groove could be either: - 4/4 with each quarter note divided in groups of seven notes (or septuplets) - 7/8 grouped 4+3 with bass drum on the 1st 8th note and the snare on the 5th note. I find this option less intuitive at this point. - I'm not going to consider bars of 7/16 because that would be a pain to simply write on a music sheet, so that tells me it's not the simplest way to think of it. If we listen to the other instruments, they seem to not be playing any specific harmonic rhythm that could help us count in 7/8. However if we think of it in 4/4, they'd be playing whole notes at the beginning of each measure. Therefore that seems to give more weight to the 4/4 perspective. It's also easier groove and think in 4/4 at this point having a very clear back beat on beat 2 and 4. The part I definitely hear in 7 is that post chorus/solo part after the first chorus. We can hear clear markings of 7/8 throughout Gavin's playing. I hope this helps, let me know if you have more questions about this.
@@MaximeCholley Thanks for the perspective. It's interesting that a guy who plays this so well, doesn't confirm a specific form for that part. So it's a mystery still :) Well done Gavin! You probably know why I ask this though, because there is something about the beat that's not quite 4/4 “even”, especially when you consider Gavin's general feel (very precise and laid back at the same time). With that in mind it seems that the first snare hit and the 1 is just a tiny bit ahead of where it would be, somehow. Add to that he has stated, that he likes to make odd meters feel even, and vice versa. Maybe it's just me and I'm lead to believe that it's in odd-time because the hi-hat and ghost notes are so puzzling and make the back beat and the 1 feel ‘ahead’. In any case, 2:09 and 4:55 also still make me question if that verse part is in (an) odd-time, or not! He has definitely lived up to making 4/4 feel odd-time here, if that's the case. One of the, if not THE most intriguing drum rhythm I've ever heard. Anyway, great playing and video btw!
@@darksunwithin 2:09 and 4:55 are without a doubt in 7/8 which is considered an odd-time signature. As far as the not quite 4/4 even feeling, it's simply this trick of dividing the quarter note into 7 equal parts as I was saying in my previous comment. He's not pushing or pulling, nor laying back to create this effect, but rather your ear is tricked into feeling like this because usually the quarter note is divided into 16th notes or 32nd notes which are respectively 4 and 8 equal parts. The septuplet subdivision is rare in western contemporary music, which is why it's unsettling. Try playing the video at half speed and counting each quarter note the following way "1-2-3-4-1-2-3" for the verse groove. You'll find that it fits perfectly, and that Gavin is absolutely playing on the grid, just a different type of grid, applied to 4/4. That's pretty much the best I can do to explain it by text. But if you wanna dig deeper, you can email me at maximecholleymusic@gmail.com I'm happy to dive deeper into it, we can set up a lesson, if you want to learn more about this. Thanks for watching the video :)

nicely done mate. it's a difficult song to learn/play, yet you did it! You're not lacking talent for sure! What you are lacking is a bit of acoustic treatment, it's a bit reverb heavy, probably from the empty wall behind you. you might want to cover that with some foam or or material.
