If I lived and drove at least a mile and up to two miles above sea level I might find the NA engine in the Mazda3 lacking in performance. But that's an environment that only a minuscule portion of the US public faces (i.e. About 1/4 of one percent). A 0-60 time of 7 seconds (C&D testing) at near sea level is more than adequate for the vast majority of drivers, especially if it's coupled with excellent handling. Typically TFL discussions of performance in vehicles with naturally aspirated engines include a reference to the elevation of Denver/Boulder. That should have been included here. I'm usually skeptical about the value of AWD in a small, light FWD-biased vehicle. Typically a good set of snow tires and the weight of the engine over the drive wheels will accomplish about 95% of the missions of an AWD vehicle. But if Mazda's claims about the programming of the AWD system in the Mazda3 are valid, this may be an exception. A poor man's version of Acura's SH-AWD that aids handling in many situations. @@4x4.tests.on.rollers Right, to get three wheels with no traction means you're driving on ice or stuck in a mud patch lol. Both bad and both are scenarios that you shouldn't be driving in anyways. Just hang up the keys and call in sick to work lol.
What isn't good? One big problem is that parking on city streets will produce a bashed grill frequently, since it has no effective front bumper. This is not unique to Mazda, there are plenty of other new cars I would never buy because the front is unprotected.
2 questions: Are you turning off the traction control/stability control, and engaging sport mode for the slip tests? Were you at a high altitude on the acceleration runs? My neighbors 3 hatch runs great at close to sea level.
I hated the rear end when Mazda first showed it, and felt the massive, squashed C pillar was odd. But now I think it's perfect, and that this car is stunning - especially in this color/wheel spec. Funny how taste can change quickly once the eye adjusts. I also felt the current gen WRX was hideous when released, but now I like it. Go figure.
Took me a sec too with the new Mazda designs. Took a bit longer with the Subaru’s though. They just don’t look “Subaru” enough to me. But my idea of a “Subaru” are the earlier rally designs and the 22B LOL.

It's *Probably giving enough "drive" to the rear,* but it's all going to the which ever rear wheel, that is on the rollers. I think mazda started using pretty good front to rear Couplers, but need a Rear right to left Coupler or LSD. I Doubt, they would spend more money on that, so simulated LSD By independent wheel Brakes would work well. 😉
@@Derkenblosh2 You will NEVER see the rotory again except in a hybrid system as an alternative power unit. Rotory's cannot pass emissions in America. Now you can get the RX-9 in Australia and Japan and maybe even Europe. But you will NEVER see one in America.
The big flaw is the small back seat 5:37 since it cannot be used for UBER/Lyft. Lease residuals (and therefore lease costs) are based on the market for 3 year old cars. Since the 3 year old market is now driven by whether a car can be used for UBER/LYFT, this car will have low residuals, and higher lease costs than Corolla, Sentra, Elantra and others which can be used.
Of course the fuel level and range are going to be different. The level is the physical level measured from a float in the tank. While the fuel range is calculated based on fuel consumption and fuel level.
The reason the reversing camera doesn't take up the full screen is that the car can be specced with a 360 degree camera. When the happens, the reversing camera is to one side whilst the top down view is on the other.
I'm happily surprised that I gave you a shot.. This review is way better than I thought 💭..btw thats a big compliment I'm giving you.. Great Job tall and thin 👍🏾👏🏾 I wish mazda added the Turbo engine to the 6 speed manual.. Love me some clutch
I bought the 2019 FWD version of this car with Mica Blue Exterior and Red Interior. Extremely well made and quiet on the highway. For me the current four cylinder engine is more than enough for my daily commute. I don't see a need for turbo. It drives just fine as it stands.
One thing about the keyfob that I didn't realize until I read about it in the manual is that the cover comes off and there's space inside it for the strangely-shaped spare key. I don't know if sticking the key in there gives it more heft or rigidity, but it does explain the size.
The reason it slipped when you did the traction test with the rear wheel on the street is because the rear differential is an open differential. A serious all wheel drive or 4 wheel drive system would have a limited slip or locking differential. The car is absolutely beautiful inside and out. Those engines go for a long time and it has a real transmission instead of a high-maintenance dual-clutch or a short-lived CVT.
The "Speed" name is not going to return. Mazda is moving the brand up market to compete with ze Germans. That's not to say that cars that offer Mazdaspeed-like HP/torque and handling/braking won't happen, but they won't be branded/marketed like Mazdaspeed was. Mazdaspeed was a direct response to Honda's Type-R badged cars, and those were targeted at the 20-30 something "Fast and Furious" crowd: big spoilers, big exhaust tips, graphics, etc. The new performance models will be more along the lines of the BMW M/Audi RS/Mercedes AMG line up; they're go-faster models for grown ups who don't want to drive cop magnets.
You should test that lane departure assist. Set a piece of thick rubber mat in your travel lane in the path of the right tires and see if the car will allow you to steer around it slightly over the white line. Just imagine the rubber mat being a small piece of plywood with nails sticking up. If the car doesn't allow you to avoid something like that then Mazda may end up getting sued for replacement tires... LOL
As an owner of one of these AWD models since early May, I have to agree with everything said on this video. Spot on. Great car overall, improved in almost every way... except for fuel economy and power. Both of which are noticeably down from my 2016 Mazda3 GT. Not horribly so, but still a bit disappointing.
Randy Ross Yeah I don’t know why that is. I’d like somebody from Mazda to explain why the SkyActiv 2.5 engine has gotten slower and less fuel efficient over the past few years. My 2015 Mazda 6 has this same engine and it accelerates faster and gets better fuel economy than the newer 6’s. It’s rated at 25/37 but I can get as high as 39 at times.
@@bobbowie9350 Regardless, it's only 170 pounds heavier than my 2016. Yet it feels slower than the heavier CX-5 with the same drivetrain. And my fuel economy has shown to be 25% higher too. Maybe Mazda messed up the tuning on some of these new 3's?
some quirks and features after owning 2022 mazda 3 for few months: 1 camera is not wide because there is 360 degree system in upper versions 2 you can bind seat positions to separate car keys 3 it is imposible to open center concle when back seats are folded down 4 sport button is for gearbox exclusively (there is no sport button in manual) 5 key is trash
I had a Speed6, I imagine a turbo AWD 3 would be similar, but waaaay more refined. I will say that the AWD system in the 6 was prohibitively expensive to fix when it broke, which it did twice in the 4 years I owned it.
As an engineer, the less moving parts you have the less likely things can go wrong that goes with every mechanical gadget you buy. Checkout driven and the other different car reviewers that actually talked to them. Being biased is easy being objective is hard
The 2.0 engine paired with a turbo giving 250 torque and 230 horsepower would be perfect for this as the top level. With sedan sales declining across the board, no matter how great this car looks isnt going to sell it when you have a powertrain that matches Corolla and Civic. I had this same engine in my 2014 Mazda3.
Toyota and Honda are so focused on competing with each other that they forgot Mazda has been trying to compete as well. Because of that, Mazda has truly come on top in recent years with beautiful styling and sportiness. The way they center the dash reminds me of the Rx7 FD.
Why did you stop doing the roller slip test in the loading dock? Or do you not chance that anymore after the Tesla??? LOL I don't like the look of that Mazda 3. I did like the '07 Mazda 3 that I had driven years ago.
The digital "fuel" have you're talking about is not supposed to measure the gas level, this the measurement of the miles to drive with the current gas in the car.

Nice job, Tommy. You've really evolved into an excellent car reviewer. The best at TFL, if I'm being honest. I hope you stay true to honest reviews. I really enjoy your videos!

ive ordered mine getting it in october :)... im getting the SE LUX 2.0 model in soul red crystal :) cant wait. fantastic video btw buddy. subbed and liked m8
Please let me know if you ever have any problems with it because I’m highly considering one. Thanks and Congrats
Tommy, your reviews are definitely appreciated. You offer a perspective that definitely has an audience. Keep it up!
You should try a thing called 2ND GEAR FIXED MODE during roller test. It made huge difference in my test of CX-3 on rollers.
Dont confuse him. You noticed he still has two rollers as most important test, not three.
@@seventhson4766 Imho two roller test is much more important than three roller test.
I see it differently. Two roller test is letting you know if awd is capable, three roller test tells you how much is capable.
@@seventhson4766 Think about any real scenario where three wheels has 0% grip and one wheel has 100% grip ;) It doesn't exist :)
This is not unique to Mazda, there are plenty of other new cars I would never buy because the front is unprotected.
having driven modern 9 speed ZF equipped AWD's from experience the 6 speed Mazda auto is a fantastic box, underrated.
9 speed zf is the Worst performing transmission of all time
2 questions: Are you turning off the traction control/stability control, and engaging sport mode for the slip tests? Were you at a high altitude on the acceleration runs?
My neighbors 3 hatch runs great at close to sea level.
yeah he specified he had traction control on, youre explicitly told to turn it off for slip tests
9:45 for the AWD test
Blink twice if your dad is forcing you to be apart of TFL.
😂😂😂 *Blink three times if you rather flip burgers.* 😉 Blink three times, followed by left eye wink and a tongue lick to the right eye, if your dad is not your Real dad at all !!! 😂😂😂😂😂😂
A part. Not apart.
I liked it the second time around
I’m getting Gremlin flashbacks with that side profile 😂😂
The Gremlin had more cargo room and blue jean seats.
Oh for sure
"Coming inside the new Mazda3" Whoa, Tommy, take it on a few dates first.
I own a 2007 mazda 3 mps.what a fantastic car.big trunk space.large space and headroom for rear passengers.lot of room and space in front.very nice everyday family car.i feel the BK model is the best
Now all it needs is a 300+hp minimum and a proper differential and call it the speed3
It needs more space too. It needs more refinement and noise cancellation that the Honda excels.
Needs a rotary
@@Derkenblosh2
You will NEVER see the rotory again except in a hybrid system as an alternative power unit. Rotory's cannot pass emissions in America. Now you can get the RX-9 in Australia and Japan and maybe even Europe. But you will NEVER see one in America.
William Su well here’s the thing it’s not a speed 3 it’s a Mazda 3, a Econ car.
this is properly in depth review, especially things nobody else talks about so thanks a bunch :)
They should put the 2.5l turbo 4 cylinder and bring back the Speed 3, being the best new handling hot hatch to date!
Hmm sounds like a Subaru...
Shit car
@Iedy Iedy
The GT Reserve and Signature Mazda 6 has the 2.5T in it now, as of 2018. The 2019 CX-5 Signature also has the 2.5T in it.
Makes it a great buy for me in about 3 years.
It's also just a Mazda. They have never had as high of a resale value. That's a good thing for someone that doesn't drive for Uber/Lyft.
Of course the fuel level and range are going to be different.
The level is the physical level measured from a float in the tank.
While the fuel range is calculated based on fuel consumption and fuel level.
I test drove one in Canada, the back up camera is widescreen and the guide lines are dynamic, not static like in the video.
we're not all Rich car reviewers.. Cost matter to a great many people in the Real world..
The reason the reversing camera doesn't take up the full screen is that the car can be specced with a 360 degree camera. When the happens, the reversing camera is to one side whilst the top down view is on the other.
Tommy has grown immensely as a presenter, his opinions are usually on track as well. I hope he keeps up the transatlantic English ;)
I'm happily surprised that I gave you a shot.. This review is way better than I thought 💭..btw thats a big compliment I'm giving you.. Great Job tall and thin
👍🏾👏🏾 I wish mazda added the Turbo engine to the 6 speed manual.. Love me some clutch
Nice job on the AWD test, thanks.
I bought the 2019 FWD version of this car with Mica Blue Exterior and Red Interior. Extremely well made and quiet on the highway. For me the current four cylinder engine is more than enough for my daily commute. I don't see a need for turbo. It drives just fine as it stands.

When they make the AWD Manual I'll get it.
What is strange is you can only get the manual with the AWD version, ie, top of the line.
@@txshirle sorry what is (ie)?
@@JeovahLovesYou for example
@@txshirle AWD is available on every trim level. The manual is only available on the FWD Premium.
@@robertrobinson526 Yes. That was what I was trying to convey. Which seems weird to me.
One thing about the keyfob that I didn't realize until I read about it in the manual is that the cover comes off and there's space inside it for the strangely-shaped spare key. I don't know if sticking the key in there gives it more heft or rigidity, but it does explain the size.
Seriously good looking car. I love the manual option. Imagine if it had the turbo engine or the Miata Engine
miata engine? that's weaker
I got a white one with black wheels and red leather! Love it
I got one just like yours on Friday. Looks and drives amazing!
Would also suggest that engine is too underpowered for the front-biased AWD to send enough power to just one back wheel at low revs.
That's what I was wondering about.
Front diff is also open.
Mazdaspeed3 2.5L
skyactive x turbo Awd 320 HORSEPOWER ♥️♥️♥️
Wood go into debt for
The skyactiv-X is a 2.0. Now the inline six skyactiv-X engine they are testing might be a different story.
@@terryfaugno9242
You are correct on that.
Picking up my golf R next week but would choose Mazda MPS over it in a heartbeat
Watching this 3 years later with my 2023 turbo AWD lol the fact that the lack of turbo was the only problem is exactly right
ALMOST looks as nice as an Infiniti Q30/QX30
yes, it looks litle lije a q30
To me the Mazda’s design is easier on the eyes. It’s smoother. The Infiniti seems jagged
And costs about half as much
You should test that lane departure assist.
It's because it's really a refresh. Same exact hard points as the outgoing model
@@bobbowie9350 Regardless, it's only 170 pounds heavier than my 2016. Yet it feels slower than the heavier CX-5 with the same drivetrain. And my fuel economy has shown to be 25% higher too. Maybe Mazda messed up the tuning on some of these new 3's?
some quirks and features after owning 2022 mazda 3 for few months:
1 camera is not wide because there is 360 degree system in upper versions
2 you can bind seat positions to separate car keys
3 it is imposible to open center concle when back seats are folded down
4 sport button is for gearbox exclusively (there is no sport button in manual)
5 key is trash
6:13 Kia Soul: hold my beer
I had a Speed6, I imagine a turbo AWD 3 would be similar, but waaaay more refined. I will say that the AWD system in the 6 was prohibitively expensive to fix when it broke, which it did twice in the 4 years I owned it.
Since you brought up the look of the rear hatch...to me it resembles the AMC Gremlin.
Hell no ! The gremlin was totally squared and this is a beauty .
fernando cavazos closer to the Pacer.
Before the 3 there was the 323. In 1988 it came with AWD. Way, way ahead of its time.
and it was even more underpowered than this car
Nah, Subaru had turbo AWD starting in 1983. Heck, you could get an AWD Ford Tempo in 1987 lol
@@TheDeezelsmoke The Jensen FF is a four-wheel drive grand tourer produced by British car manufacturer Jensen Motors between 1966 and 1971
Yep and the JDM Familia Sport20 had AWD in manual but the USDM Protegé5 didn’t. The US get everything late
@@TheDeezelsmoke I was talking about the 323. It was underpowered with just front-wheel drive
They also cheapened the rear suspension this generation. Switched from a multilink irs to a torsion beam.
As an engineer, the less moving parts you have the less likely things can go wrong that goes with every mechanical gadget you buy. Checkout driven and the other different car reviewers that actually talked to them. Being biased is easy being objective is hard
@@aricasual3522 they cheaped out and put that money somewhere else. See Savage Geese
You don't feel it though. Coming from an frs this thing handles great for what it is.
This must be Mazda 3 test number 213 on TH-cam...
and you are still here, so it was worth it
Toyota and Honda are so focused on competing with each other that they forgot Mazda has been trying to compete as well. Because of that, Mazda has truly come on top in recent years with beautiful styling and sportiness. The way they center the dash reminds me of the Rx7 FD.
Why did you stop doing the roller slip test in the loading dock?
Or do you not chance that anymore after the Tesla??? LOL
I don't like the look of that Mazda 3. I did like the '07 Mazda 3 that I had driven years ago.
I have a 2018 GT Sport. it's not fast, but light weight wheels (17*7 rpf1s) help off the line performance greatly.
That is a *THICC* c-pillar.
I enjoy these AWD and 4WD testing videos, it’s interesting seeing own different systems work. Keep it up!
Agreed ;)
It's too dramatic. That's not how you go in or out of the car.
Galadima Rashad yeah he def oversold how “hard” it is to get into it. Like come on guy.
Thank you for the details on the traction control the one at 9:25 was very helpful for understanding what to expect :) Much appreciated !
Does anyone know if more throttle would have helped engage the rear wheel on the 3 wheel slip test ?
I wonder how much this one would cost to repair if someone was to back it into a wall?
Bahahahahaha, too soon 🤣
One intentional click bait bit is enough I guess....
Oh, you went there!
People who do the FSwerks turbos gonna have fun with this one
It’s like a Japanese German car. I like it!!
I said the same when I bought my '07 Mazda 3! And my '14! Great cars!
Really good job on the slip test!
6:06 don't park your car next to the 3 or hopefully a 3 owner doesn't care next you with rear seat passengers in it. Ding city
A Suzuki Jimmy doesn't get stuck on TFL slip test. The AWD on that car is just for traction purposes, enhance agility and mitigate over or understeer.
Real nice review but an AWD system that can’t get you unstuck (don’t put power where it’s needed) is no good .. should call that system a 2x2 ..
It is not like that in real conditions. Test on three rollers is just fun, it doesn't simulate any real situation, unlike the test on two rollers.
The digital "fuel" have you're talking about is not supposed to measure the gas level, this the measurement of the miles to drive with the current gas in the car.
Irving A yes and based on your avg mpg
I wouldn't mind a 6 speed Mazda6 if I was buying brand new.Dont really like the new Accords look
They honestly did well designing the front. They kept it clean and i like it.
Honda and Toyota would have ruined it with some fake vents.
