We're excited for the next chapter to start overlanding in our new Kimbo truck bed camper, designed exclusively for Toyota Tacoma and Made in the USA! Check out our tour of our new toy!
I lived out of a Lance pickup-camper for 4 years, long ago. The warm-feeling, wood-paneled interior, cabinetry, and plush upholstery always gave me a good feeling about "coming home" to relax after work every day. This Kimbo camper appears to be very well-built, but it looks like the interior design is surprisingly sterile and basic as possible. I'm guessing you'll add a little color and softer textures. Enjoy your travels.
Oh wow! Bryan plans to add some accent walls and custom cabinetry to make it more personalized. We had a few other projects take precedence, so maybe this will be something to work on over the long winter.
Interesting... we had a cabover camper... found that for the price and fuel add, made more sense to pull one than load one with such tight quarters. Plus we're getting just a bit too old to climb up into bed and crane necks in there. It's a cool company and for younger couples without kiddos I think it's a winner! Congrats you guys! Smiles and blessings...
the Dickinson..Stove/ fireplace Sold me!!...of course the 'Space Age 'look' to the camper too!!!....'Base' model is GREAT!!..no objection in my book! cheers from Canada!
I like it just the way it is. Very minimal. I would keep it just as it is, no building anything. For water I’d get a LifeSaver Jerry Can with the shower head so I could purify my own water from any source, a folding sink and toilet from Amazon, and a 12 volt fridge. Awesome! Enjoy! Very happy for you both! It’s awesome!
Congrats on the new Kimbo! I've been contemplating on pulling the trigger. Looking forward to seeing more episodes of your camping adventures. Also beautiful GSD, I lost mine a little over a year ago and miss him so much.
Congrats on the new camper. Hope to see you guys get onto and tackle more outdoor challenges. What I heard from other people who owned similar setups is that you may need heavy-duty shocks and springs with excess weight.
👍Nice! I like everything except the design of the permanent lift kit brackets hanging out there acting as wind brakes, I'd be pulling them boys off first thing and putting the bolts back in the holes with some rubber washers and a little caulk if needed, regardless what Kimbo says. It's yours, do what you want with it. Brian could fashion or buy a step that fits into the trailor hitch. Looking forward to see what all Brian does with that "intuative" mind of his. Congrats, I'm currently pricing materials for a Ford Transit build, so I know the excitement you guys are feeling. I'm going full blown solar baby!
in the old days i had an inflatable pillow to go between the camper and the truck roof it helped with the wind/aero not sure if such a thing is still made. now i pull a trailer. nice camper good channel content
Hey! Absolutely love these campers and love what you guys’ are doing with yours. Does the base model come with the hinged bamboo seat between the kitchen area and the bed? Specing one out myself right now!
Thanks so much!! Yes it does! And it also comes with the Goal Zero battery pack, also the Max Air fan as well. I think the only "extra" we got was the stove/heater.
@@ColoradoMountainLiving I didn’t know the battery was standard! Did you get solar with yours as well? I saw the solar package was extra. Just curious how the battery would operate if one were to do a solar package after.
Thanks! We are just getting started and had a lot of other things going on that didn't allow us to build it out over the summer, but next year we should be ready to go!
It’s good to see a scaled down interior version, more spacious looking and feeling. Most others opt for the full kitchen and that large box/storage shelf up against the bed. Your interior looks less cramped and more user friendly. New subscriber and looking forward to seeing your trips with the Kimbo, congrats.
Think about getting a 2 or 3 step "mounting" steps from the horse and farm store. They are for getting on a horse. They are very sturdy plastic yet lightweight and some have storage compartments. Meant to be kept outside and compact enough to place inside when u r on the road. Have fun with completing your camper and personalizing it your way.
After having a propane tank stolen being able to lock your tank up is a major feature. The biggest group of tourists in Colorado are people who already live there going camping far away from the area of Colorado where they live. My family lived in the mountains near Bailey, but my mom liked camping at Rocky Mountain National Park on the other side of the continental divide.
Nice. Yes, funny how we live in the mountains but want to camp in "those mountains over there. " We've got plans for some desert camping in Utah this fall.
DOT regulations usually state that you’re Prohibited from locking up access to the propane tanks . It makes sense . In a emergency a lock would slow down a responder from being able to shut off the tank .
You two seem super excited to put the camper to use. From the outside it looks like it would pretty cramped but it seems quite spacious for such a small unit.
Looks great. Question, did you do anything to upgrade the Tacoma's payload capacity? How does the truck ride with the Kimbo in the bed? Any balance or center of gravity issues? Thanks in advance!
We have yet to upgrade the suspension, just got new tires, so one thing at a time. No real noticeable difference driving with the load, other than stopping time, but we're not driving it over 70 MPH.
Ya nice camper is there a cassette toilet I have a 2022 Chevy Colorado it the work truck model it has the v6 as far as springs and shocks on the rear is it strong enough take care happy camping
@@ColoradoMountainLiving Same type of construction and look, all aluminum, but no cab over. Topper style built so you still have the bed for a lot of storage, so not as luxurious but trade offs. On mine on the beach for fishing weekends I put out a large canopy off the back and sides.
Its well built and well thought out that's for sure. That must have cost a pretty penny, but its money well spent. Thanks for the tour, take care and travel on !!
It is a cool concept but I think there are a number of improvements it needs. I owned one that was loaded with all options. Sold it after two trips. Luckily it has the hype it does and people fought over it. It probably is ok for a single person but as soon as you have a second it gets cramped and the 90 degree short seating is very uncomfortable. You can't sit up in bed, and because of the 45 degree angles up there, you can't lounge in bed either. It also sweats on all the thermal bridges it has with the rivets. Camped in freezing weather and had miniature ice cycles forming on all the rivets. Because the heater is on the far end and not thermostatically controlled it is on or off and when it is on, it is way to hot so it has to be off to sleep, so it will get cold and your warm breath will condense and freeze on the exposed metal surfaces. Oh, don't step on that metal AC cover if you have it without shoes in cold weather! The front window because of the angle may drip water on the bed or soak the felt covering below it in cold weather. I don't think it was meant for that angle of install. The door drips water everywhere because it sweats also. Brought these things up with them. Not sure if they have made many changes.
Thanks for the input! we've notice a few of these things(sweating rivets), but being a smaller person (Amy) has no problems with sitting up in bed or comfort of the benches. We haven't done winter camping yet, so I'm sure they'd be more noticeable if we did a lot of that. Bryan may take it skiing this winter and test it out.
I like the looks of the kimbo..I just wish the company would open a distribution center on the east coast..I'm in Florida, and the thought of having to drive 3k just to pick one up..then 3k back makes it a major pain in the a$$..there web site doesn't mention anything about selling units anywhere else than Washington!!!.enjoy your unit..many happy miles I hope.
Very cool. It looks like a space capsule. Did you have to upgrade your factory Tacoma suspension to handle the added weight. It's near the upper limit for Tacoma's?
I know you said those legs removable you definitely want to take those things off if you go on any off-roading or tight Trails you don't want to get those snagged on a branch and have a branch can stab through the side of it or rip the legs off that would suck
Camper is about $28K. It fits in either the short bed or long bed, but short bed will have to leave tailgate down. If you have the long bed, you can close the tailgate.
Hey! Thanks for the video! I’ve sold myself on the kimbo, only to find that it exceeds the payload capacity of my 4x4 trd sport by 150 lb! How did you deal with that?

Yes and yes. So Price with the Dickerson stove included was $27K and that's with taxes and everything. The mileage surprisingly didn't change much- about 2 MPH difference/ decrease after install.

@@ColoradoMountainLiving thanks for responding. do you find the truck rides rough without upgraded shocks or the payload is too heavy? or are you mostly looking at shocks just to be on the "safer side"
Apologies if already covered in the comments below. How has the Kimbo affected your trucks performance and gas consumption? Obviously there's performance and efficiency degradation; just wondering if it is to an extent that you have had to edit use of the truck. (cut back speed on freeway, % of suffering at the fuel pump)
Got to watch that lock on the propane compartment. in many states thats illegal. you can lock the tanks but locking a compartment prevents fire fighters from acccesing it to quickly shut off valves.
@@ColoradoMountainLiving a vehicle like that isnt for the faint hearted especially when it comes to fuel costs, we spent a lot on fuel around 4500 litres for the australia tour... a trip like that we planned 3 years in advance... id say the same amout on fresh water to drink...
Because of the cost of new campers, I am researching building a teardrop foam camper. I want a teardrop so I can pull it with my Kawasaki Teryx 800. That will allow me to really get remote in my camping. Weight is critical and I can control the weight.

Awesome!! We've used it over the summer for traveling to art shows and was able to carry all our gear, pop up tent, add a bicycle rack and sleep our dog. It's also come in handy to crash in the airport parking lot before an early flight . Have yet to try it out for skiing, but we have more mods to do to get it better equipped for next summer, including storage, sink and stove components. It met our needs perfectly, didn't incur any debt or ongoing storage fees.
It seemed fine on the highway with stock shocks but if you're planning on lots of off roading, upgrading may be smart, we are still looking at options for this.
I would be interested to know the weight of this thing, their website says it starts at 900 lbs? The Tacoma has a payload of less than 1200 lbs, add the weight of passengers, gear, fuel and water, you maybe have a 5-600# usable payload, so I would say that your camper is at least double the allowable weight..
Base model about 900# and the Toyota payload at 1200#, so there's a little wiggle room. I wouldn't say double the weight. Weight of passengers wouldn't contribute to payload.
I'm wondering why you would want to maintain humidity in a camper. I would want to eliminate any humidity in that small of a space. How much was this unit as equipped?
It's monitoring humidity, not maintaining it, (or maintaining it under 50%) sorry if I misspoke. Equipped it was near $41K (solar panels, appliances, cabinetry)
@Colorado Mountain Living Really? I'm surprised that's an option with the tailgate down. I've been thinking about something like that for myself to use for travel.
I wanted to get an insert camper for my Canyon Short Bed but no one seems to make them. Then I discovered that GM recommends against this. I’m not entirely sure why but I believe that my bed is aluminum to reduce weight and putting an insert in, beyond a cap, may destroy the sides and bed of the pickup. A long time ago (in a galaxy far far away) I had a camper top on an old Datsun pickup that was bolted to the sides over the wheels. I was going over a bridge/causeway coming home from Ocean City, NJ, and someone waved me off to the shoulder. As soon as I pulled off the whole camper blew over and ripped out the seals and rivets and the bolts holding it down. I was very lucky that day! When the wind dyed down I used a 14 gauge extension cord I had and tied it down after getting help to right it again. that got me home but it was the end of my camper.
@@ColoradoMountainLiving : 😏 Oh, it seems decent size from video with a defined space, raised floor separation, slatted wooden slab to stand on and drip off, etc.

At the Kimbo company production site in Bellingham WA.
I almost fell for these and then I saw the price you can have it.
it's perfect for us!
How much for this basic model ? I saw one for sale on a video from New Jersey , she was selling hers for 35 K , that was in 2022.
I believe it was about $26K.
Where do you mount your bike(s), top or side?
He's going to get a rear mounted tow hitch that swings out.
@Colorado Mountain Living Really? I'm surprised that's an option with the tailgate down. I've been thinking about something like that for myself to use for travel.
Look up Rocky Mounts - that’s the one
@@ColoradoMountainLiving I had a front mount Hidden hitch installed for the bike rack. The bikes don’t block the headlights either. 🌲🤙
Can the do one for dodge ram 5'7"
I think they are only doing Tacomas for now.
Didn't hear the price mentioned ?
We paid $26k
Wow what a story! I can see why you want to research well at this point
Cost?
About $22k
Price?
Last we lookd at the website it ranged from $22K -$35K
How are couples able to sleep on a full mattress???????
hahhaah. Amy's very tiny.
🤔 You should use your entry area as a place for shower, not by the bed.
Perhaps, but that area is really small, and the area by the bed, you can hang a curtain from the fan.
@@ColoradoMountainLiving : 😏 Oh, it seems decent size from video with a defined space, raised floor separation, slatted wooden slab to stand on and drip off, etc.
Does anyone make one for Tacoma that sleeps 4? Are they under $13000?
Dont know about that but we are working on a modification that will allow it to sleep 3.
@@ColoradoMountainLivingis there a way to put an AC inside to plug in?
Lets keep the price a secret
There's a range of prices based on which add ons you want.
Lol! I like the negative comments. Probably most of them don't have a camper. Its a personal choice of what adventure you use it for.
Good point!
I thought the shower pan is in front of the door
The shower pan is whereever you want it, if you're using a contained system. There is additional water proofing built in that entrance area.
Wheres the bathroom?
We are adding a potty (future video( and will show shower options.
🇳🇴👍👍👌🥇
looked pretty cool..... until we saw the obscene price for one of these. 40K to sleep in your truck? Only in America.... lol...
we didn't get the 40K model. which is why we are doing a series of custom building off the base model
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Thanks!
An investment in quality
We think so!
Where's the potty???
we need to decide on which model to get
@@ColoradoMountainLiving bag, rock, bucket, log, bottle, or tree ? basic choices. 😂
Propane cabinet should not be locked, and must be vented. Very dangerous if you ever have a fire or leak!
thanks. we do have 2 gas sensors inside the cabin.
