The provocative, imperious and engaging Swedish-based metal group SOEN unveil their fifth album, IMPERIAL, via Silver Lining Music on January 29th 2021. Founder members Joel Ekelöf (vocals) and Martin Lopez (drums), along with Lars Enok Åhlund (keyboards and guitar), Oleksii “Zlatoyar” Kobel (bass) and Cody Ford (lead guitar) have never shied away from challenging our perceptions of life and humanity, and IMPERIAL continues SOEN’s unique journey through the psyche of our species and the conundrum of our times. Eight crisp, sharp, and supremely constructed songs spanning frustration, reflection and hope, IMPERIAL is the most direct fierce? and dynamic release of SOEN’s journey, one which continues to be deeply therapeutic for both the group’s dedicated followers and the band themselves.
“In my life I try to be as real as possible, but I think that the music, and nature, of SOEN are the only place that I really, really feel I can be myself,” explains Martin Lopez “When you’re home, doing music, writing lyrics, that is where you really get to express yourself without any judgement and with total freedom.”
Produced by Iñaki Marconi and the band, IMPERIAL was mixed and mastered by Kane Churko, who has worked with the likes of Ozzy Osbourne and Bob Dylan, giving songs such as ‘Illusion’, ‘Modesty’ and the epic closer ‘Fortune’ a dimension and richness which will reach yet more ears and minds. The sheer power and poetry of SOEN’s dynamics are more completely executed and honed than ever before, something which is perversely a product of the COVID-19 pandemic.
“It has obviously been a crazy, terrible thing for everyone, and for us as a band it has been really frustrating not being able to play shows,” says Martin Lopez “but also it has given us a clear window of opportunity to realise this album completely. We were able to spend 12 hours a day for many months bringing IMPERIAL to the place we truly wanted, mainly working on the groove and flow of the album.”
“We will always be a band that has the old will to fight for freedom and all the important things in life, the people, the underdog,” furthers Lopez “You have to take on the big question marks such as what the fuck are we doing with our lives and where’s the empathy. Why do we keep on testing and crushing ourselves as a species?”
IMPERIAL is an album which will engage the listener immediately and sustain long after this crazy time has passed, its rich details destined to make it a classic metal album of this era.
“As we continue, we find inspiration in the sad fact that the world is getting more and more polarized, that it’s more complex and it’s not consensus or people getting along.” says Ekelöf “We continue to try and understand why and how that will affect us all.”

Remember when the first album dropped and this band sounded so much like Tool, but that was good because Tool refused to release a new album? Well, Tool is still Tool, but Soen evolved! And I'm so glad they did!
I agree man. My brother introduced me to Soen after we listened to a lot of Tool together. My first thought was "A new Tool song ?!" Nope, juste Savia a god, it was amazing and now Soen are their own band, and their identity is so strong.
Agreed, even more so with the huge disappointment that has been Fear Inoculum to me.

As someone in kind of a dark and desperate place right now, this track gives me some feelings im not sure how to process. i used to have that shield. i hope i find it again soon.

No need to wish luck. Once you step into Soen's world you will get addicted. No worries of that. BTW. I would recommend to listen Telurian LP to feel Soen ideas for music. In my private - best album of these amazing band. I felt in love very quickly same as for TOOL.

I mean this ain't a bad song at all, but the mix is...weird, to say at least. It feels like there's a bit of a sonic gap that should've been covered by the guitars, or a bit more reverb on the drums. Nevertheless, interesting and fresh sound for Soen!

check the earlier releases, there is a weird high freq buzz at dynamically more silent points of the vocal performance. its most prominent in lumerian
@@intergalacticspacecanoe4659 after listening to all the other songs, I don't rly hear what you're saying, (imo the mix is pretty flawless on most of the album) but I've been listening to it with standard earphones. Also, in many cases, the youtube sound compression is to blame for buzzes like that.

I remember clearly some folks comparing Soen with Tool on the basis of their first effort Cognitive. I like Tool and their new album was a disappointment for me. But on the hindsight, I enjoyed cognitive back then and now digging even more the way Soen progressed.
Cognitive and tellurian were 2 god tier albums had they kept along the Tool “clone” route they would be infinitely better than they turned out to be

I find Imperial and Lotus a little dull, the songs don't seem to have the scope nor the scale of the songs on Tellurian & Lykaia to me, I'm somewhat disappointed in their evolution but I still love them. They've gotten pretty stale and cookie cutter with the song structures as well, relying on the same hooks a little too often. But still there's plenty to like.. just a little disappointed it's basically lotus 2.0, the album doesn't really feel different enough. Everything just feels really sterile now whereas they felt so organic before.
Too bad you don't get it. Soen is one of the few bands that evolved album after album. They reach another level with the addition of Cody Ford with Lotus.
I think you are listening to them with your brain. I suggest using your heart instead.
It's a great album, but come on!; this song is a terrible closure and only a blind fan can see it as good when it is a throwback to how evolved the rest of the album is.
"Modesty" and "Fortune" the lowest of the album, the rest is of excellent quality.
