  • A few weeks ago we did our best to defend wingers and some of the decisions they make out their on the edge. Oftentimes, a jamming winger is responding to a cue they recognise in the attack while other times its a movement informed by the defensive systems in use.
Some NRL clubs like to defend quite aggressively on the edges while others employ a more passive approach as they herd the attack towards the sideline.
There's never one right answer to a rugby league problem and edge defence tactics is a relevant example in the NRL right now.

I notice there's no comment about the eels this season... Quite right, we're dreadful.

I do think how good the half is defensively is one of the main components of edge defence and in general it's an underrated way that halves can add value to their team given the amount of targeted attacks they face. Jackson Hastings had phenomenal value in the area in Super League

It's certainly a factor! Generally speaking, attacking teams are trying to engage the three-in (half) or four-in (backrower) defenders to create space out wide. A good defensive half can release the teammates around him a little earlier on the edges.

hey, love your content. might be a bit less jarring to have your camera overlayed somewhere instead of cutting back and forth between the visuals

What's the best way for an attacking team to deal with a well connected edge defence such as Penrith?

Phew, thank goodness you didn't cover the Warriors, because we simply "do not" defend on the edges this season. See video - "why do wingers jam?".
