Amazing and inspiring video. As someone from RJC I can tell you that the stigmas around different JCs are bullcrap, the number of pay2win students in RJC with ridiculously expensive tuition classes and students who did well for PSLE but fell off over the years is mad. End of the day, its honestly down to the individual student and how hard they work.
well if u find the correct private tutor, for chem for example, he can literally derive (almost) every single reaction and every single concept in ur syllabus- so it does make ur life tremendously simple. as a chem tutor myself, i help my students derive and unds every single org reaction and from there they’re able to predict whether ANY 2 organic reagents A and B can react or not.

Hi Solomon, thanks for the very informative and helpful video. May I know if your grades for your WAs, promos and prelims were as good as they were in the actual A levels if you are willing to share
hihi, first time I hit 90rp was at A levels so the ans wld be no, however generally I was alr doing q well for the wa promo and stuff, like arnd 60 70 range then with each assessment it slowly increased (except for prelim where it slightly dipped as I explained in the vid)
@@SolomonLP thank you so much for sharing! If you don’t mind I have one more question, what motivated you to work so hard in JC compared to secondary school?
Another tip i would like to add is, identify concepts and questions you are weak at, and then look through related lecture notes and concepts and videos, and ask questions
bro if I'm being 100% honest I didn't train for ippt 💀 especially once prelims starts it's gonna be damn difficult to continue training, cos the practice papers really take a huge chunk of time and energy from you at a time. but not to worry, if you can replace "unproductive time" (ie. gaming/scrolling mindlessly through various online media) with training, you'll be able to do it for sure
Tbf, students from less well to do background have a harder time to score better, the science behind this is explained in the book "poor economics" I got to understand the importance of good nutrition and healthy lifestyle in improving your studies before that book was published As a computer science student, I recommend you do "both" medicine and computer science by studying how nutrition and exercise works, they will improve your willpower a lot, I personally don't use a tracker and rely on set timers for my healthy activities. If you need book recommendation for computer science, nutrition, finance, psychology, feel free to ask me
@@SolomonLP if it's about nutrition, google on how to have a balanced diet, for cheaper variants, you can try eating sardines instead of salmon for example, fortified milk or soy milk is actually cheaper for calcium per 100g, computer science wise I started with the book java how to program early objects, currently I am trying to plant plants and keep a hamster as a pet, the plants I googled on how to take care of them with filtered water and homemade fertilizers
@@SolomonLP I think in medicine, they don't teach you these nutrition stuff sadly, for investing ,read intelligent investor, the formula inside makes the most sense out of all the investing books I read
@@SolomonLP for relationship/psychology books, I recommend science of happily ever after and 7 principles of making marriage work, those contains the largest amount of research behind them
Hi Solomon, congrats on your achievement! You have shown that you do not need to go to top JCs to get 90 RP. Are you planning to go into Computer Science?
When you go for consultation with the teacher, do you try to jot down whatever they explain to you before moving onto the next question, or do you not jot down and just move onto the next question. Given that consultation can be pretty rushed due to time constraints
u don't jot down everything bcos, like u said, there's a tme constraint, however u shld jot down any new information the teacher gives u as well as critical info that clears up ur doubts. u cld js ask the cher to give u a minute or two while u write down briefly
Hello, do you think it's advisable to do only the additional questions at the back of tutorial without touching the TYS? I have many J1 topics that i am still weak at and i don't want to start on practice papers without first getting a good grasp of my foundation
I think it's good to do the additional questions, however, I'd advise you to definitely try out the TYS OR topical revision packages given to u by the sch. imho, doing supp practice ONLY isn't rlly enough for A levels. for now if you really dh time you could skip tys ig but by the time prelims come to an end, you should have at least done either topical rev package or TYS for your topics
well yeah but I did those for previous exams, like for J1 exams I'd study by doing additional qns so I kinda alr did them before and didn't redo them for As
When you came across a new study method that's more effective, did you relook at previous work you have done using this new study method or did you just go ahead and do new practice papers and new topics using the new study method?
to be fair, experimenting with study methods is something you do earlier on, not right before exams bcos it's basically the WAY u study, so I wouldn't say i relooked at previous work when I found the method that worked for me. I'd say u shld go ahead and progress forward with the new study method because it will reveal gaps in your understanding and knowledge anyway if the method is truly good for u and works well
there are a lot of considerations to be made here and idk how good you are in each of your topics so I can't really say for sure but I'll tell you this: j2 topics are overall more complex and more difficult than j1 topics and I doubt you'll be able to learn them well if you don't have good foundation in j1 topics. ofc this depends on the topic itself and which subject ur looking at but generally this is the case. therefore I would probably focus on j1 topics first in a chronological order all the way and try to get my topics done ASAP. worst case scenario is to be doing topical when a levels are right around the corner. you want to spend the final leg doing practice papers, as many as you can
im sorta in the same position as u were after receiving my o lvl results (l1r5 raw 17), and i just want to ask what made u choose YIJC instead of poly? and what gave u the confidence to go for YIJC knowing that poly might have been btr for u.
for one I had no passions/interest so any course I go to in poly would have been something I'd have to warm up to and enjoy for 4 years, otherwise it'd really be tough to last so long doing something I have 0 interest in. I also did not really like having to keep working w others in group projects for grades and wld rather rely on my own merits. to me I thought choosing a poly course wld basically be like choosing a career right there. as for choosing jc in the end, ultimately it was definitely a gamble bc i was never good at studies so there was a good chance I'd completely fail in jc and have to drop out. I figured I might as well give it a shot, it seemed more exciting in the sense that it keeps my options open and I can choose a bunch of diff pathways. ig it also wastes less time by gng to jc and dropping out within a year and then switching to poly as opposed to going to poly, not liking it, switching to jc and then switching back to poly
This isn't academic related but what was your diet like in JC? What specific foods/drinks did you consume to keep you awake during study sessions? Did you drink coffee?
for studying I wasn't exactly fighting to stay awake because I wasn't really sleep depriving myself. i did drink coffee habitually bc I love coffee, otherwise I didn't consume any energy drinks or supplements. if you're struggling to stay awake it cld be possible that you're accruing sleep debt in the weekdays n it might be time to check how much sleep u have (or have not) been getting
brother in all honesty I don't have much information on our arts dept so I wouldn't be able to tell you. however, for the 2nd part I'd like to say that I think regardless of whether or not the dept is good, you definitely have the chance to hit 90 :) that ability lies within u
it depends on what season you're in, when you're out of exam season I guess you may not even really need to "study", like just focus on understanding the new concepts you're learning first, there's a lot to learn. during exam season tho ofc, you gotta study, I wouldn't really set a certain time quota for myself. instead, I'd set a "volume" quota, meaning I'd do a minimum amt of work each day before saying I'm done for the day . you could try smt like that :)
if you're aiming for 90 I understand it can be demoralising and it may not feel the same, but for me, I saw it as "aiming for maximum score" instead of "aiming for 90", so had I gotten B for PW I would have still been motivated to aim for the "maximum attainable score" basically
Hi Solomon, thanks for sharing ur tips to us all, but for me it is still difficult retain all the concepts after a period of time especially since there’s so much information to digest through. It’s like after u revise one topic and do topical qns for them, u forget other topics after a while. How can i retain all of them and still get a good enuf score if I tend to forget them after a while?
hello i'm not solomon but i got 88.75rp so maybe i can give some tips :) for me, it was also hard to retain all the concepts. It was crucial for me to make my own notes/summary, while referencing the school notes and MOE learning objectives. Referencing these materials ensures that you your notes are concise yet it has all the important concepts. Understand the concept then write it down, in a way you can understand. This solidifies the concept in ur head. If you forget later down the road, you can read ur personal notes again, and it should be easy to understand because it's like speaking in "your language" All of solomon's tips are great in aiding your learning and memory retention also, I personally resonated with everything he said, especially the discussing with friends part. during lectures, if i didn't get a concept, i would ask around. It's important to understand the rationale behind the concepts, and talking with friends is a easy way to get around that.
bro best way to do this imo is to teach your friends the concepts (or have them teach you) once they start getting fuzzy in your head, you will actively recall and challenge your memory as well as understanding 👍
as a private candidate u won't have school to push you to do your stuff so it's important to have a Daily routine for u to make sure ur studying on ur own, otherwise u might procrastinate until the last few months and by then it'll be too late to start bc u wouldnt have had any stimulation from school. otherwise idh any unique tips, the same tips still apply :D just replace SLS with ur own online lectures or videos etc
after June, around July schools would have finished teaching the syllabus so students are no longer required to go to school at that time. They will only have to go to school to do their prelim(Sep) and A levels(Nov)
yes correct, just like the dude above said. after July mostly you'll come to school to brush up on concepts and do prac paps. I just stayed back with friends or went home to study during this period, I didn't have to sacrifice sleep and I didn't want to do that either because sleep is vital for studies
@@SolomonLP Thank you for your information. He got a Bachelor, Master and Doctorate degree in Physics and afaik physics is fairly competitive to get in, so I believe he got a very high RP but not so sure if it is 90 or not 😅.
Hello, this isn't really academic related but do you notice that when you study sometimes you will just stand up and walk around the house out of boredom? Isn't that distracting?
hi, sometimes I do like to alternate between sitting down and standing up while studying, for that I just set up my desk in a way that befits what I'm doing (either sitting or standing) as for walking around, typically I'd do that when I'm feeling tired and want to take a break, so I wouldn't call it distracting? bc I'm not doing it in the middle of a question or smt and I like to walk up to the window and js chill there for a bit
pretty sure a pass in A math is needed :) it's assumed knowledge (its becomes basic stuff that they wont rlly go through) and it will be extremely difficult to cope with h2 math if you were not able to pass o level a math
@@SolomonLP aaa would u think travelling to yi (1hour20mins) is worth it or just go to poly which is like only 20mins away 😭😭 honestly been wanting to do As since soo long but the long commute time is def not worth it anym
I mean from my hse it was also abt 1hr 10min and poly also v close (20+min) n I chose to go jc.. I think its more abt whether u think u can handle jc n whether u wna take that risk or not, also depends on whether u already have an idea of what career path u wna go down
@@SolomonLP ohhh isok, tbh i realised my english would really drag me down for gp and not being able to take h2 mah makes me feel like poly is a better choice for me HAHAHAHA 🙏🏻 thank you for replying though!
ima be honest I just asked my questions whenever they popped up so it's really a big mix, could be I ask my friends, research on my own, ask during consult, ask at the end of a lesson, text the teacher, etc etc the important thing really is to js ask
@@SolomonLP What gives you confidence that you can do well in general? Like what gives you confidence that you can memorise things and retain information in general
as for doing well, confidence comes from having done well before (in previous tests and assessments etc) and from readily being able to explain any questions that another person might have (u know ur stuff well and can remember without having to refer). as for the second part, I wouldn't really say I have "confidence that I can retain/remember", its more of literally analysing every qn I do and working through all the concepts in detail in my mind such that it becomes ingrained in my memory? since I don't really sit down and memorise for hours I don't really have that much fear that i won't be able to remember

Tbf, students from less well to do background have a harder time to score better, the science behind this is explained in the book "poor economics" I got to understand the importance of good nutrition and healthy lifestyle in improving your studies before that book was published
As a computer science student, I recommend you do "both" medicine and computer science by studying how nutrition and exercise works, they will improve your willpower a lot, I personally don't use a tracker and rely on set timers for my healthy activities.
If you need book recommendation for computer science, nutrition, finance, psychology, feel free to ask me
Well he did say he was gonna take medicine and computer science in another comment
bro I'm interested in all of those topics 💀 dyu mind dropping your best suggestions 😁
I am looking into cs yes 😁
Hello when you did practice papers and you found that your concepts are weak, did you rewatch the SLS or did you simply read through your notes
Read through notes, watch videos on TH-cam on the topic, ask teacher and friends
@@SolomonLP videos on TH-cam? There are such videos that can explain the practice papers?
woahhhh i took the 2022 a levels too, i respect u sia
When you go for consultation with the teacher, do you try to jot down whatever they explain to you before moving onto the next question, or do you not jot down and just move onto the next question. Given that consultation can be pretty rushed due to time constraints
u don't jot down everything bcos, like u said, there's a tme constraint, however u shld jot down any new information the teacher gives u as well as critical info that clears up ur doubts. u cld js ask the cher to give u a minute or two while u write down briefly
thank you for the tips!
could you drop more? thank you!
@@SolomonLP wait so did you finish all the additional questions for all the tutorials for all the subjects before you started on TYS?
well yeah but I did those for previous exams, like for J1 exams I'd study by doing additional qns so I kinda alr did them before and didn't redo them for As
When you came across a new study method that's more effective, did you relook at previous work you have done using this new study method or did you just go ahead and do new practice papers and new topics using the new study method?
to be fair, experimenting with study methods is something you do earlier on, not right before exams bcos it's basically the WAY u study, so I wouldn't say i relooked at previous work when I found the method that worked for me. I'd say u shld go ahead and progress forward with the new study method because it will reveal gaps in your understanding and knowledge anyway if the method is truly good for u and works well
If i have many incomplete tutorials from J1 and MYE is approaching, which do you think i should focus on first, the J1 topics or the J2 topics?
there are a lot of considerations to be made here and idk how good you are in each of your topics so I can't really say for sure but I'll tell you this:
j2 topics are overall more complex and more difficult than j1 topics and I doubt you'll be able to learn them well if you don't have good foundation in j1 topics. ofc this depends on the topic itself and which subject ur looking at but generally this is the case. therefore I would probably focus on j1 topics first in a chronological order all the way and try to get my topics done ASAP. worst case scenario is to be doing topical when a levels are right around the corner. you want to spend the final leg doing practice papers, as many as you can
Where are you going / planning to go with the 90RP?
lookin at med and cs rn my G
im sorta in the same position as u were after receiving my o lvl results (l1r5 raw 17), and i just want to ask what made u choose YIJC instead of poly? and what gave u the confidence to go for YIJC knowing that poly might have been btr for u.
for one I had no passions/interest so any course I go to in poly would have been something I'd have to warm up to and enjoy for 4 years, otherwise it'd really be tough to last so long doing something I have 0 interest in.
@@SolomonLP thanks a lot, i think i understand my options btr now
This isn't academic related but what was your diet like in JC? What specific foods/drinks did you consume to keep you awake during study sessions? Did you drink coffee?
for studying I wasn't exactly fighting to stay awake because I wasn't really sleep depriving myself. i did drink coffee habitually bc I love coffee, otherwise I didn't consume any energy drinks or supplements. if you're struggling to stay awake it cld be possible that you're accruing sleep debt in the weekdays n it might be time to check how much sleep u have (or have not) been getting
@@SolomonLP the coffee that you drink, is it instant coffee (powdered) or is it canned coffee?
i don't really drink instant coffee, usually it's decoction (a method of homemade coffee) or canned nescafe or something in school
do you think yijc arts dept is decent , good enough to get 90 rp like how you did in sci stream?
brother in all honesty I don't have much information on our arts dept so I wouldn't be able to tell you. however, for the 2nd part I'd like to say that I think regardless of whether or not the dept is good, you definitely have the chance to hit 90 :) that ability lies within u
Hello, how was your application to uni? Did you manage to make it to Medicine?
Bro this is off topic but bro looks are majestic asf
How important would you say it is to reread questions you are weak at?
To what extent were your study methods different from those who also got 90rp?
My guy, you are doing the gods' work. Well done on your journey!
mad respect to you!!! atb for uni
Everyone else: wow hes such an inspiration!
His bunkmates: 💀💀💀
How long is sufficient for a J1 to study on a typical school day?, given we can end at 5 on some days
it depends on what season you're in, when you're out of exam season I guess you may not even really need to "study", like just focus on understanding the new concepts you're learning first, there's a lot to learn. during exam season tho ofc, you gotta study, I wouldn't really set a certain time quota for myself. instead, I'd set a "volume" quota, meaning I'd do a minimum amt of work each day before saying I'm done for the day . you could try smt like that :)
Appreciate it G.:)
Bro's a legend!
Great video. This actually applies to secondary school too.
hi! what advice do you have for people who are demoralised after getting B for pw?
if you're aiming for 90 I understand it can be demoralising and it may not feel the same, but for me, I saw it as "aiming for maximum score" instead of "aiming for 90", so had I gotten B for PW I would have still been motivated to aim for the "maximum attainable score" basically
Hi Solomon, thanks for sharing ur tips to us all, but for me it is still difficult retain all the concepts after a period of time especially since there’s so much information to digest through. It’s like after u revise one topic and do topical qns for them, u forget other topics after a while. How can i retain all of them and still get a good enuf score if I tend to forget them after a while?
hello i'm not solomon but i got 88.75rp so maybe i can give some tips :)
for me, it was also hard to retain all the concepts. It was crucial for me to make my own notes/summary, while referencing the school notes and MOE learning objectives. Referencing these materials ensures that you your notes are concise yet it has all the important concepts.
Understand the concept then write it down, in a way you can understand. This solidifies the concept in ur head. If you forget later down the road, you can read ur personal notes again, and it should be easy to understand because it's like speaking in "your language"
All of solomon's tips are great in aiding your learning and memory retention also, I personally resonated with everything he said, especially the discussing with friends part.
during lectures, if i didn't get a concept, i would ask around. It's important to understand the rationale behind the concepts, and talking with friends is a easy way to get around that.
if you retain them, then do practise for experience, your hard work will pay off in terms of your score
bro best way to do this imo is to teach your friends the concepts (or have them teach you) once they start getting fuzzy in your head, you will actively recall and challenge your memory as well as understanding 👍
absolute 🔥 💯
How did you get over the social anxiety of asking questions in class?
Do you have any tips for people retaking as school candidate?
as a private candidate u won't have school to push you to do your stuff so it's important to have a Daily routine for u to make sure ur studying on ur own, otherwise u might procrastinate until the last few months and by then it'll be too late to start bc u wouldnt have had any stimulation from school. otherwise idh any unique tips, the same tips still apply :D just replace SLS with ur own online lectures or videos etc
You are my hero!
any tips for GP?
Next video: how i got monster forearms and grip strength
How did you manage to squeeze in 4 hours of studying? U had to sacrifice sleep right?
after June, around July schools would have finished teaching the syllabus so students are no longer required to go to school at that time.
Understood.
thx man, very helpful
My teacher said that he went to YIJC and got 90 RP, but it seems like you are the only one throughout the whole history of YIJC. Is he capping?
hahahaha I think he might have gone to yishun jc or innova jc, yijc was two separate jcs before they merged :)
@@SolomonLP Thank you for your information. He got a Bachelor, Master and Doctorate degree in Physics and afaik physics is fairly competitive to get in, so I believe he got a very high RP but not so sure if it is 90 or not 😅.
Trackers to recommend?
Hello, this isn't really academic related but do you notice that when you study sometimes you will just stand up and walk around the house out of boredom? Isn't that distracting?
hi, sometimes I do like to alternate between sitting down and standing up while studying, for that I just set up my desk in a way that befits what I'm doing (either sitting or standing)
as for walking around, typically I'd do that when I'm feeling tired and want to take a break, so I wouldn't call it distracting? bc I'm not doing it in the middle of a question or smt and I like to walk up to the window and js chill there for a bit
LEGEND
No one gonna talk about how he looks like nino from miraculous ladybug?
bro 😭
@@SolomonLP u cant deny the fact that you look like him tho😭😭
@Wei Kwang bro cmon it's just the fit.. right...? 😭 😭 😭
@@SolomonLP idk , but this vid right here looks 100% like nino
which sec sch were u from? U seem quite familiar
ctss :)
How did you find the exam schedule for JC1
hiii isit a must to take a math or score A1/2 to take h2 math?
pretty sure a pass in A math is needed :) it's assumed knowledge (its becomes basic stuff that they wont rlly go through) and it will be extremely difficult to cope with h2 math if you were not able to pass o level a math
I think its more abt whether u think u can handle jc n whether u wna take that risk or not, also depends on whether u already have an idea of what career path u wna go down
@@SolomonLP ohhh isok, tbh i realised my english would really drag me down for gp and not being able to take h2 mah makes me feel like poly is a better choice for me HAHAHAHA 🙏🏻 thank you for replying though!
mm good English helps a lot w language marks if ur content marks not rlly thr, atb in poly :D
Did you ask most of your questions in class or during consultations?
ima be honest I just asked my questions whenever they popped up so it's really a big mix, could be I ask my friends, research on my own, ask during consult, ask at the end of a lesson, text the teacher, etc etc the important thing really is to js ask
@@SolomonLP What gives you confidence that you can do well in general? Like what gives you confidence that you can memorise things and retain information in general
as for doing well, confidence comes from having done well before (in previous tests and assessments etc) and from readily being able to explain any questions that another person might have (u know ur stuff well and can remember without having to refer).
as for the second part, I wouldn't really say I have "confidence that I can retain/remember", its more of literally analysing every qn I do and working through all the concepts in detail in my mind such that it becomes ingrained in my memory? since I don't really sit down and memorise for hours I don't really have that much fear that i won't be able to remember
so informative omg
What's the minimum hours of sleep you'd suggest?
depends individually but I'd say bout 7+, 6+ is pushing it
How did you do for prelims? You said you sacrificed your prelim results for A levels
I think it was 77.85 arnd there
goodjob bro🙏🏽🙏🏽
90 rp from YIJC??? what a bloody miracle
Are you planning to continue study in NUS/NTU or any other local university?
yea I applied alr but I might also look at overseas stuff
@@SolomonLP any offers?
