How to Get Your Driver’s License in Japan
Depending on your prefecture, you may need an actual appointment, or they may give you a broad schedule. I was told to come any time within certain hours on certain days. If you have to take the exams, you may need to schedule those separately. Some centers do not allow you to do everything on the same day.
What You Need
1.Your valid license
If you do not have a valid license, you will need to go through the same licensing process as a Japanese citizen.
2. An official translation of your license
You can get official translations through JAF
3. Your passport
4. Previous licenses
You need to prove that you’ve had your license longer than 90 days. They also want to cross-check your driving history with your passport. If the license you have was renewed right before you came to Japan, and you have to proof that you had a previous license.
5. An official copy of your juminhyo (住民票)
6. Money
The average cost of a normal license is about 5,000 yen per trial.
7. A Japanese speaker
If you do not speak Japanese, you may need to ask a friend to come with you. Most prefectures lack the resources to provide foreign language help. While most prefectures have language options for the written test, the practical exam and all the paperwork, instructions, and so on will be in Japanese.
The Written Test
All of the laws, regulations, and other information on the written test can be found in Rules of the Road, published by JAF. At about 1000 yen, the book is informative and worth the price if you can’t borrow a copy. Some libraries or schools have English language copies.
The Practical Test
Each prefecture runs the practical test a bit differently. Some centers let you do a practice run, while others don’t. Some centers change the course regularly, while others have the same course every time. It all depends on the center.
However, be aware that almost all center’s courses feature the train crossing, an S curve, a Z with right corners (aka. The Crank), and a straight speeding zone. For manual transmission tests, you can be certain you will also have a hill. Knowing what the standard obstacles are will help you eliminate the element of surprise and any related anxiety. Some centers will allow you to practice these obstacles prior to your test, some only on a different day for a fee. If you lack an IDP and can’t practice on narrow roads, watching online videos may help.

The Japanese style of driving school sounds good to reduce road accident.
Driving test in Japan don’t seem hard. Coming from a manual driver in the UK. You just got to everything you done in UK driving lessons + looking at the back mirror every time you turn. The fact that it’s auto too makes it even easier.

First check in the mirrors and after that stage you can use the blinker, don’t blinker first and then check, because passing cars will think you will drive away at that moment. It gives confusion for the fellow road users. So mister instructor, the crucial parts really needs the be correctly explained.
This is kinda nostalgic for me because when i was first introduced by the instructor he so calm but after many few days when i was driving then the instructor become strict 😂
The Japanese bombed the crap out of Pearl Harbor and designed one HELL of a battleship in Yamato...You’d THINK they could come up with a driving test that didn’t make Calculus look like child’s play.
When you drive the back roads here it's really understandable why the test is like this...

I went to driving school in Japan and got my drivers license within 3 months in 1996 , ohhh yeah I was caught 3 times , yopparai unten after I got my license, lol then over speeding , and singo mushi , after that no more violations, so my license is gold 20 yrs now !

Very late reply, but no! I have awful Japanese personally and I can only pick up on when they say "left" "right" "faster" and "stop". They will speak in all Japanese at most testing facilities but as long as you know and study the course before hand you will be okay!

what about manual car gear after turning off the engine?? it should be into gear 1 or nutral?
maybe it's too late to answer you, but I will do anyways. It doesn't matter actually, but at least in European countries many people put it in to a gear after stopping engine. We do it because if for any reason your handbrake would fail the gear will hold the car in place and the car will not roll out from parking lot. But be sure to put it to neutral when starting the car again, you can start it in gear also, but if you release the clutch and the car is in gear the engine will die, or if you release to biting point it will start to move and maybe you don't want it to move yet. So put it to neutral when starting the engine.
