The Perfect Character Design of Senku

  • Senku is probably my favorite genius character in anime. I often struggle with this type of trope since it's been overused but luckily Dr. Stone approaches the idea of being a genius from another perspective and it works wonders.

He’s also one of the few genius characters I’ve seen who actively enjoys sharing his knowledge. Most genius characters horde their knowledge and find it tiresome to explain their plans to those who can’t keep up with them. Meanwhile Senku loves sharing his scientific knowledge. He enjoys pranks and trickery, but clearly because it’s such a fun way of using the scientific knowledge he’s spent his whole life learning and gets others interested in learning. His earnest friendship with Chrome built on the desire to share knowledge is probably my favourite character dynamic I’ve seen in shonen in a long time.

There's so much of Senku to break down and love, but one thing that really stuck out to me is that he's not the condescending genius. Yes, he knows he's scientifically the smartest guy in the room at all times, but he not only genuinely values and openly praises others' strengths, like exploration (Chrome), investigation (Suika), psychological insight (Gen) and craft skills (Kaseki), but he's never one shy away from putting in the same effort as others. Even though he's not the strongest, he still puts in the labor along with everyone else. Even when he has the entire village at his command, that doesn't change anything except make his ideas bigger. Though he'll delegate as it makes sense, he still busts his ass with everyone else and he's never shown that he ever feels like something is beneath him and I think that humanizes and makes him incredibly likeable. As much as they joke he looks like a villain when he schemes to make people help him, its not ever like a deal with the devil where people wouldn't do it anyway to get what he can offer them. Its an equivalent exchange. People aren't his pawns or tools, they're his potential community and its so heartwarming that he happily uses his intellect for good.

ever since I watched Dr Stone, I immediatly fell in love for Senko, and how he has a different vision than others. And is always positive, and able to make up from his mistake, like other great people we have in real life. I say that dr Stone is somewhat a real anime, meaning, geniuses we have in real life (surpprisingly watches anime) can actaully feel the grief, struggle, thoughts Senko has. And conclusion, people, even me can understand him why he does this for the sake of saving humanity and making the world amazing again, without sacrifing anyone else.
In short, I REALLY REALLY REALLY love and respect Senko's character.

It is true though, there is no objectively good morality.
Let's an age old question, the troley problem, either do nothing and kill everyone or kill a person to save a person. If you think killing a person to save a person is objectively moral good. Then you're wrong. Since while one school of ethics would agree what you did was good, another would say no you're evil (cause you killed someone).
All actions have consequence, and it's not the direct consequences that are often judge by people after - and often than not that's where the morality of your actions are weighed.
Guy that spared Hitler in WWI? He just didn't want to be a mindless slaughterer. Did he do someting morally good? maybe.

If everything is subjective, then shouldn't a society built upon constant atrocities work? History shows that to be unsustainable.

I'll say this as many times as I have to, but character design is just about how the character looks, and how the personality of said character is personified by their appearance. Learn what a word means, before using it incorrectly. What you're describing is a "character study". Where you analyze what makes a character tick, and go over every aspect of their personality, morals, and other personal traits

  • @jonson856

Its also interesting that Senku, even though he is a genius, he is not deus ex machina genius. Not only has he made less than optimal decisions, sometimes he was even off. Or to be precise his science is not always the solution.
This show has several genius level characters, but different kinds of genius.
E.g. Senku with his scientific knowledge of many things.
Gen with his understanding of human psychology.
Tsukasa with his intellect. Yes he is very smart. Street smart but also intelligence wise. The fact that simply by deducing the direction in which Senku, Taiju und Yuzuriha left, he knew Senku was making gunpowder shows that he is very smart.
The show is good at showing the different kinds of characters being good in their field of expertise.
Even Chrome will shine. Chrome will re-inventing things of which Senku doesnt think about, even though he knows about them. Which shows, sometimes Senku mind is a bit too high up in the clouds sometimes.
All in all, I love this story. Not only is it different from the typical shonen stuff that I watch, it is also believable in its own way.

I know this video is 3y old but also, another apect that I like about Senku isn't specially ass-holish about his knowledge, I mean he did own Chrome when they first met and didn't seem to understand how much Taiju helped him with his muscle, but he's quickly humbled and started to appreciatte everyone by their unique skills. At first appreciating Taiju and Stukasa's strength but also people with different types of knowledge after he understood what true science is like Chrome's logic and quick thinking skills or Gen's social inteligence and trickery. So by the middle of season 1 we already have a Senku wich understands that his enciclopedic knowledge isn't the only knowledge that there is.

Haven’t watched the video yet so apologies if I end up repeating what you say: one of the first things that occurred to me about Senku is that he is actually not that different from a typical shonen protagonist:
Doesn’t know when to quit? Check
    Seemingly uninterested in romance? Check
Wants to ‘save everyone’ no matter how unlikely it seems? Check
Tendency to put his friends’ well-being above everything else, including ‘logical thinking’? Check
Just really strong set of morals in general? Check
RIDICULOUSLY passionate about his favourite thing in life? Check
    Generally emotionally driven? Check
(Also he loves ramen but I don’t know if that counts... ^^’)
You get my point. Really the one thing that makes him stand out is, to nobody’s surprise, his intelligence. When you go back to my point about ‘ridiculously passionate’, a typical shonen protagonist would be passionate about, let’s say, football, if you’re watching a football anime, or adventure, or whatever the subject of the anime is. The fact that Senku’s passion is... science of all things, is, in my opinion, the biggest AND one of the _only_ things that separate him from the shonen protag archetype... But man what a refreshing twist that is!
Of course I don’t mean that all shonen dudes are the same, they’re really not, but I really like how Senku still manages to fit the typical criteria while being so unique.

Senku is currently my favorite Shonen protagonist for many of the reasons you listed. I’d also add that his subtle emotional moments help make him human without overriding his overall characteristics. Though I do disagree with your morals statement. Senku does make morally gray decisions. He’s open to cheating, manipulation, blasphemy, and making selfish decisions. But he has a good heart and doesn’t flaunt it. That’s why he’s at the top of the list.

I'm surprised that I like this show, but I do have 1 major complaint that ruins my immersion. I know a lot of highly curious, well educated people and I asked myself seriously if this could be the anime to get them into anime. The answer was no for one simple reason: Senku's lack of curiousity. Granted, I am only up to episode 7 as of writing this, but his curiosity takes a major step back for survival and that would make sense if he didn't waste energy on gloating on knowing things. The more you learn, the better you understand how much you *don't* know. Everyone I know in the science field is constantly telling me about the amazing things they *don't* know yet and how hard they're trying to know them. That's really what being a man science *means*... Maybe it's because Senku is a teenager, maybe there is a better reason to come about later, but that's my one and only complaint. He's a great character otherwise, but he's deeply unrealistic to his defining characteristic.
Sorry to throw a negative point of view out here, excellent video and great breakdown of why the trope succeeds here. It might have been cool to see some specific examples instead of video feed of "geniuses gone wrong" but nicely made video regardless.

Ah, you should skim the comic! Things change quite a bit, and there's a few situations where he's out of his depth.
Slight spoilers, but there's a few times where it's a major flaw that he already has knowledge, as the more "Primitive" Chrome (a person born in the stone world) ends up teaching/humbling Senku a few times, since he's self taught and learned science (considered Sorcery) out of natural curiosity. It's good!

In real life, social ineptitude & genius-level intelligence tend to go hand-in-hand a lot. Senku is a super-genius with excellent charisma & social skills; honestly, the only thing keeping him away from full-on Marty Stu status is his lack of physical prowess, which is pretty much treated as a non-issue, considering how the series glosses it over. It barely feels like Senku has to struggle. If he were socially inept, I think it would have made for a compelling struggle as he tries to convince the people around him to trust him & work together, tripping & stumbling in his efforts a bunch but ultimately managing to win people over through perseverance. Just because Senku has a trait that most anime geniuses don't, that doesn't necessarily make it a good thing.
The only real problem with social ineptitude in your typical anime genius is that this flaw doesn't cause any friction or issues; it's just brushed off as part of what's supposed to make them "cool"/"mysterious", whatever. There are never any problems arising from miscommunication, no one ever gets significantly upset or angry with them, and the genius character never experiences any internal conflict from their ineptitude.
It's kind of odd that No Game No Life was displayed as an example of played-out, typical anime geniuses; a lot of Sora & Shiro's decisions are driven by personal desire or a sense of morality, rather than cold, amoral logic, and Shiro suffers from anxiety that's so severe, she goes catatonic when Sora isn't around.

One of the aspects i find really pleasing about series is the fact that Senku is actualyl a humble person, who find a pleasure in hard work and love to share his perception with others. Suika not being able to see world as Senku made him want to share his literal vision with her, same as he did with Chrome, by sharing his knowledge of scientific world. He also respect people around him and understand importance of diversity in society.
And additionaly, his "shared vision" trait is something you'd find in art or education. It's a desire to share experiences with others.

If someone constantly gets everything right, always has the answer, always knows the optimal solution I get the feeling they're akin to a bot, like a Google search gets animated or something. People are interesting because they're flawed and watching them work to overcome or even utilize their flaws to their advantage is entertaining to me, they have depth, colour, vibrancy and more to the point they're relatable.

The amazing implications of Game Theory is that science without morals isn't scientifically founded. Game Theory is the study of strategy in cooperation and competition.
These "genius" characters should learn the philosophies put forth by the study of Game Theory.
It puts forth the philosophy that the most beneficial outcomes to you are ones that are empathetic to both your partners and opponents. especially over time. but, it is important to not be a pushover. The only difference being that i had died (couldn't remember how), not turned to stone, and was revived 110 thousand years in the future instead of 3000 ish. The natives of the future were living in the ruins of our civilization and had lost all technology, and they were extremely impressed when i talked about our past world. Then i made a point that i would restore humanity to our former glory using everything i know.
It was a hell of a surprise to see my dream made into an anime so close to me having dreamed it. i wish this happened more often.

I had first planned to bring us to the iron age (with some period inappropriate techs mixed in, like electricity) and go from there. like if the industrial revolution happened at the same time as the iron age. Didn't have long to plan specifics though, dreams are fleeting and this one ended just when i was about to spring into action. the only thing i had in mind was to create all the most common tools, to create basic machinery to create even better tools. wouldn't be that hard because i was starting from a kind of razed down ruins of a industrial complex. The place those people were living in were similar to levels in half life 2 if they spent 150 further years abandoned (yeah it felt more like it had been some 300 years, not 110 thousand years). so i had plenty of usable metal available
