    The way in which you are able to be both confident in your own abilities whilst being humble enough to see and be intrigued with the craft of others remains fascinating to me. This theme of balance in confidence is so essential and beautiful not just in your videos, but in your relationship with the artform of woodblock printmaking itself as well. It is one of many things that makes you such a unique and interesting creator on this platform, and I hope we will be able to enjoy your content for many years to come

      Thats the definition of true humility. Understanding of ones place in the world. It would be a disservice and even insulting for an expert of 40 years to not acknowledge his own skill

    Wow what a terrific idea to show these two processes uninterrupted! So many questions came to mind this time:
    1. You mention surprise at Suga-san's method and movement during the editing process. But I would've assumed that you trained her? So did she have previous experience in this field that she brings to your shop, or is her workflow a result of "tribal" knowledge passed on from your other printers?
    2. How do you communicate to the printers the proper amounts of pigment to use? The proofing stage seems to stumble into the desired colors through extemporaneous mixing. Is there a sort of recipe that you remember as you go, that you can thus pass on to them?
    3. Since the printers all use slightly different tools and are obviously left to develop their own workflow, does the end result bear a kind of fingerprint that you can spot? Can your trained eye tell who printed what, if they were displayed side by side?
    4. The modern touch of wrapping your brush with a rubber band, and the conversation with the older printer about the match labels, got me thinking: Do you see yourself more as a preservationist of a bygone art form, or as a craftsman of the modern era? And subsequently, do you classify your new works differently from traditional ones? Do those innovations let your works stand as a new era of this art form?
    Thanks again for this very engrossing video! And so nice to see a familiar face at the end!

      I think all or most of the printers that work at Mokuhankan are people who have gone to some sort of printing school, iirc David mentioned it in another video

    • @seseragistudio
      @seseragistudio  2 ปีที่แล้ว +50

      I wasn't 'surprised' in the sense that I'm not aware of what she is doing - I'm the one who filmed her. It was just that to see the two 'styles' so closely side by side reinforced for me the fact that - in truth - I myself am no longer a 'real' production printer. It has been over a decade now since hiring people to start up Mokuhankan, and the unescapable fact is that during that time I seem to have morphed into a kind of 'businessman'. I do get a bit of carving done now and then, but for printing - all I get is odd jobs like this proofing session. All through last year's Scenes of Nature series, the team did everything; I only did one session - filling in to do a batch of the June print when somebody else was unable to complete it.

      @@seseragistudio its interesting to see how one evolves in a field, and this answer does not merit difference in interest for me. Seeing how a studio operates and the relationships is as interesting as the works themselves frankly- as it is all an operation and an insight as to how things come about. I'd like to imagine what printmaking studios were like in the past, compared to now- how do folks operate, how do they work together. It fascinates me.
      Thank you for your answers.
