My dinner with Andre' felt personal to me. This is a complete work of art and fascinating to watch. I was the fly on the wall, who never wanted to leave.

I have seen Andre at least 10 times, maybe more but this was my first discovery of the interviews. Wonderful material. I love these men and & this has set off inspiration for a new theater project of my own. Thank you for this serendip!

Hi, Did u notice all the satanic rituals they spoke about in the movie. It seems to me that the character Andre is in a satanic cult.

Thanks for all of the hard work you put into uploading the interviews that came with the movie. My Dinner With Andre seems unfortunately appropriate right now. It should be required viewing globally. People need to to start thinking outside of the tiny box we've all grown too accustomed to abiding by. Take care!

My husband and I discovered this movie in the Nineties (as a video cassette, obviously) and loved it more than any other one. The mere idea of having two people talk for two hours straight, in real time, was out of this world. Since I never felt satisfied with the visual nature of film per se - even if the dialogue was interesting and poignant, it never was enough "food for thought" for me. With this one I got my fill! And the wonderfully melancholic Satie score moving, pensive and simply unforgettable. A true Louis Malle, precious, on top of all his other great films.
Our favorite part is at 1:18 when Andre Gregory launches into his vision of what the future will look like - the one we are living now, since March 2020, when you know what I mean, still hoping for "pockets of light" that will counterbalance the dark times that have come upon us. And not out of the blue, oh no....Wallace Shawn, writing the script, must have known something that was not widely known at the time, unimaginable for most, but is unfolding now.
Anyway, when our 25th wedding anniversary rolled around in 2003, we had the fantastic idea to have this movie shown at a movie theatre in Vancouver/Canada, where we lived at the time, and we started negotiations with a theatre owner. We would have anyone who was interested walk in from the street and see the film for free!! We would cover the costs. It would be a feast! Buffet and discussions after the show. That's how badly we wanted people to know this gem of a film that had been a "cult movie" in the Eighties, but was rather unknown to most in the late Nineties! Sadly, no 8mm (16 mm?) reel was to be found and so the idea dissolved into nothing.
But the film remained our favorite! And interestingly enough for the last few months it has popped up, or at least that particular chapter of the film (6), all over the internet. It was prophetic for sure, although in 1981 a long way from today's world. 40 years, to be exact. This is one thing that the charming interviewer in this great little documentary (Noah Baumbach?) did not pick up on in 2011. Maybe he would today.....

Do you think Andre came back from a satanic cult?

    • @troll23-troll23
      @troll23-troll23 ปีที่แล้ว

@@paulnicholson92 Wow, that came out of the blue...Now that you mention it, well, it has the elements of it - being laid into a coffin, awaiting your certain death, then being saved...this is satanic practice. But as always, these rituals have many layers. It was also done in Egyptian times where it was leading to an initiation and had religious reasons. Later all this became corrupted and used for very dark purposes. Thanks for the question, had not thought about it....

this movie was made on purpose to get these thoughts and ideas into receptive minds of those few who have the strength of will and the open eyes to see the symbolism displayed and take action in one's life. (I believe anyway) a big indicator of this is the fact that the movie was made by janus films which is a 2 faced Roman God of duality. janus is symbolic of the 2 sides of a coin philosophy. light and dark good and evil the masculine and the feminine. yin and yang. very deep occult symbolism hidden in plain sight

Frankly wallace shawn draws you into the entire film from his exposition leading up to the dinner. Yes he is a lower caste or perhaps even a want to be bourgeoisie. But that dynamic of having to actually work and still pursue his craft is what sets the stage.
At first andre the "tale" of him is intimidating, and then the setting is so upscale shawn wouldn't be able to reasonably eat soup on his own without future discomfort.
Then we here and are briefly captivated by andre his worldy nonchalance. The "yes we summered in monaco" type which is alluring but slowly builds a resentment.
Frankly by the end of the film i was not only disgusted with andre i applauded the courage it took for wallace to tell him in the most sensitive way. "Your life is frivolous bullshit searching for meaning and yet mine is down here in the trenches and I'm actually living and contented because I have a real connection to my wife/residence ect"
Bob odenkirk did a similar film in the 90s either 200 cigarettes or the conversation but im too tired to look up which was which.

Well I am glad all of you made the movie, it has a lot of wisdom in the movie, and I can fully understand the feelings and emotion you described the director had, this type of thing is what people live for! Not everyone can share true wisdom and experience! And those who do usually do it the same way the movie explains, they let their wisdom randomly slip out but it's mostly in the form of emotions and feelings which is socially awkward! To me this movie is on par with the Matrix, a good movie doesn't need action or special effects to be interesting, those are only extras to make a movie spark! A real good movie must have a life meaning to it! I write and produce music, I could make tons of money from writing music I do not relate to or do not agree with but I have a self interest to create music that I am passionate about! Most of you are probably just as smart as me or more, but I do believe that society's are the major problem with a persons way of life and happiness, if you break things down and look out side the box and do not live in a fantasy society world then you are most likely to be more in control or at least know who is in control which in any case you can benefit from!

i watched the movie, it strikes me as one that should be seen when in college, as from a longer life perspective it appears, how can i say? indulgent? lightweight? andre seems like a character out of the late 70's who is pretty full of vapor.
not a comment that most are going to agree with, but whatever.

No, I just got around to watching it at the age of 48, and I found Andre a very self indulgent man. I couldn’t think what he did for a living that he had the leisure or the resources to do the things he talked about, and couldn’t help but feel he was an idly rich man playing at life and thought everyone else was as well.
