- We have the real live Spirit - meet Spirit the Horse - if you have been friends of The Farm you have seen him before. We love Spirit - he is a beautiful buckskin gelding that we have done horse training on for the past year = when we first got him he was a wild mustang just like in the movie. Today, we show you all about Spirit the horse - he has some quirks that still need to be solved but come along and ejoy Spirit - we think you will love him like we do!

Let’s not ignore the fact that Blake has come a long way as a horsemen as well. Two more years or so and that young man will be doing great things in the equine world.
yep, if this was the ONLY horse Blake had, a lot of those quirks would have disappeared by now. Blake is learning so much from every horse, though, and is becoming an accomplished horseman!
Blake has the right demeanor to be a trainer too. He is calm, patient.
Great video! Your son reminds me of my Father and his brothers and Dad with the horses. Granddad said, you don't break a horse, you gentle them. A broke horse is a broken animal without spirit.

Blake loves that pony so much I bet you every time you say , sell him! I'm sure it hurts his heart, out of all those horses he's broken, nearly got killed by, reared up on, stomp on, nearlyI got killed by a couple, here or there. he only picked that one, little buckskin pony, that stole his heart. At least by what I've seen, since I've been watching, which hasn't been that long but I've seen that boy work and ride a lot of the horses, you brought home, work with three or four of the rank ones, and two or three of The Not so rank ones in just one day. But there's only one horse or pony that he has really taken to and that's Spirit.
He might of showed a little bit of liking for that little MooseI , but he was there and gone so fast, no time to get attached.don't know I've seen a lot of horses take a love for one person, and I've seen a lot of people take a love for one horse, I had my special horse and he loved me
can't figure it out, sometimes it don't matter.
Spirit might not be big enough or mighty enough or smart enough but there's a love between him and that little buckskin pony. No amount of money would be worth, coming between those two, for whatever reason. By the time Blake gets him finished out, and goes off to school Spirit will probably be able to earn his oats, I don't think I'd ever let that pony get sold I think Blake has earned his right with that pony he is a beautiful pony very very beautiful very willing nice looking very pretty little horse.this is my opinion and my opinion really don't count, but if it was me and I was standing there hearing you say , sell ! maybe or sell him or selling ,or could sell,
I think I would just go to a corner and cry my heart out. Like I said just speaking my mind.. Ok
I can't think of anyone else that would do that horse better as his trainer. Blake's gentleness and patients is just what he needs.

I think ground work even for a horse that has 100s of rides on em is a good thing. Keeps their brain fixed and doesn’t create bad habits.

Some miles on Spirit will help him, improves them greatly
Blake we used to have a mare hard to catch, suggestion take the bucket out in the pasture with you a few times so he hears you shaking the grain reward to come to you.
Instead of deliberately touching his ears accidentally touch them act like your fixing his mane or rubbing his neck their dozen ways to touch his ears, then reward him with a piece of carrot or treat. Accidentally keep touching his ears until he just doesn't care anymore. Time and patience. He already trust you, he just needs to get over his fear of you grabbing his head. Your confidence and your kindness will win him over. Positive reinforcement always helps greatly if you know his favorite treat, Apple, carrot, grain, popsicle whatever it is.

I never had a horse that didn't want to be caught. They were all grain babies. ♥ and would do anything for apples and carrots. Great job Blake.He Is beautiful.
Spirit is beautiful, love his ears tipped in black!! He's coloring is beautiful!! Black mane, black tail and black stockings just beautiful!! Icould not get rid of that horse!!
Blake has an absolute calm confident demeanor - just excellent! And yes, if you havent already , definitely check his teeth for possibly an impacted molar…Ride him in a bosal?…He also wants to really keep his butt tucked under him..perhaps unusually so…is he just scared or something else….Thanks for sharing…Blake and Spirit are a nice team!!!

Blake seems to have a relationship with Spirit, and continued groundwork with him should get rid of the quirks. Ear and face work whenever possible, even if he isn't ridden will help with those issues. Repetition is so important. Good Job Blake!
Ok I never do this, but go buy: The Revised Horseman’s Scrapbook by Randy Steffen.
It’s out of print, but you can get it off of eBay for 10 bucks. It has a few techniques you can try on your hard to catch horses and other things as well. There’s one tip in it I used as a last resort on a particularly hard headed mare that worked so well all I had to do was walk out to pasture with a stick and she’d go park herself at the gate to be haltered. That book is worth it’s weight in gold.

Just a suggestion with the Auction horse, There is this feed that is an all in one food called Senior Stable mix. He would take about a minimum of 3 to 4 lbs a feeding and you have to put water on it otherwise it will choke them. Water is a must and key. It really will help reseed him. God bless

Just a thought with Spirit's head issues, have you had his teeth checked and floated? Encountered many that accumulated head issues due to teeth, and after dental care the issues went away. It is possible that if it's not teeth, that this is a previous man made issue as well.
Hi we have had horses with ear mites that made them head shy. Once fixed head shy went away. I agree with the comment to check teeth

I always worked all of mine in a ring for maybe 15 to 25 minutes to get them warmed up and to leave the bucks etc. In the ring and not on the trail. Learned that after my horse Whiskey planted me on the trail a couple times. Lounging stopped that fast. Hehe.

Oh my goodness, we have a buckskin Quarterhorse named “Buck” who is a twin! Buck is 14hh, and 13 years old. He still acts exactly like Spirit. He’s my husband’s horse and we’ve had him about 2 years. He’s always kinda intense, so not a family horse but an excellent cutting horse. He and my husband connect well, but he seems to have picked my husband. Doesn’t like anyone else “messing” with him. I think Blake & Spirit should continue, they definitely connect 👍💯❤️

I noticed a scar under Spirit's right eye, there may be a previous injury that is causing his sensitive head issues. Love your videos and very impressed with your training.

I really think you guys should consider checking out Elisa wallaces mustang makeover videos, some of the issues spirit has she works through on the wildies so maybe blake could get some ideas on ways to try ironing out the kinks easier.

The Grain in the Bucket is a GREAT Idea.
I'd suggest shaking the Bucket a few times after he pulls his head out. That way you reinforce in his mind and memory the Sound and the Treat go together.

My bebe (quarter horse -appy mix) is about the same age (5-6), and is still spooky at so much stuff. Hes a sweetheart, can be a pain to catch sometimes, bits are a challenge to get in, and hes not to confident in new spots while being rode. I will say tho I've used the same technique of putting the feed bucket out of his reach till I get him, and it has helped so much. So keep on it, I promise itll help lol but I'm in the same boat!
spirt is a Buckskin too , your horse is a buckskin called it as they are the color of a buck deer.
Spirit has really good mustang conformation and temperament. (You should keep him for your grandkids!) I grew up breaking similar mustangs from the Blackjack Mountain bunch. Rickman Spanish Mustangs has similar horses.
Dave Reynolds has a good youtube video on mustang conformation. You often have good mustangs, and should brag on their great conformation!

Blake is assume with the horses. Love to see him work. Spirit looks just like my first horse "Buddy". Got him when he was 2 1/2 and I was 12. The first summer I got him, I rode him with just a halter and rope reins. Didn't have a saddle yet. He was a very sweet and gentle horse. I could go anywhere with him. I surely was blessed. Good memories for sure. 🥰
PS: what about maybe trying a hackamore on Spirit 🤔 that's what I use on my mare. She will take a bit, but I think she does better with a Hack. Plus I like not using metal in her mouth.
I AM nervous waiting for Spirit to JUMP out from under the saddle. I have had horses that are great 90 percent of the time so that leaves 10 percent of the time you better WATCH OUT. I love watching your videos, I check in daily. Thanks Steve in southern Illinois.

Spirit Loves Blake. That's pretty easy to see,and I don't think that Blake would want to part with that little horse.Sometimes bonds are formed between a horse and their human counterparts that's undeniable. By the looks of things Blake and Spirit are well on their way to establishing that connection. Key Blake is give him your Heart and Love and Spirit will give it back.👍😊💜💜🐴🐎🙏🙋♀️
I wonder if his head issues could be from abuse by a previous owner. If anyone can change him it will be Blake he can work wonders with horses.😊❤

Somebody must have really did something to his head for him to be that way. Blake has brought him a long way though!
Possibly, but not necessarily. Horses are by DNA & instinct very protective of that area, the poll, as right behind the ears is where a big predator will grab them and take them down. That's how people who don't know what they're doing can so easily cause a foal to flip over backward or create a horse with a pull-back problem.

I use plastic grocery bags taped to my round pen so that the wind makes them move and have a lot of luck with it calming them down and here in the SE we have ear mites not sure if y’all have them but it may be a reason for the ears prob good luck and good job

Blake was clearly on the right track with him. My take is that Spirit still had issues because Blake was getting him to the tolerating state, just not through to accepting/confident.
And just a note: at 22:43 This is not what I would call 'backing good ;~)
