I never step on the court without protective eyewear. If it causes me to lose a point that's better than losing an eye.
Kudos. Within a week or two of starting Pickleball I heard of a friend injured with a detached retina. I haven't played a single game without eye protection since then. I have heard several more stories of detached retinas from getting hit in the face since then.
haha those are my shots! Good stuff man
and nothing about possibly the best match of the tournament, the Kawamotos winning their gold medal match? geez
It's because he thinks the Kawamoto's are boring. It was easily the best match of the tournament.
Time to break out the Q-Collar, I'm going to have to buy some of their Stock now
Thank you for the video summary. I read about it and am glad to see what exactly happened. Keep up the good work.
I LOVE that whoever loses the challenge loses a timeout as the standard. I think it makes it considerably more fair. It removes the onus from the challenging team and punishes people who play the game too "tight" with their calls. I can also see why that prevents people from challenging their own calls woth the rule set-up, though. Because say Jorja calls it out, challenges her own call, and her original call is correct. Who loses a timeout in that situation? Black? Her? Nobody? Its too ambiguous. I like it when players make a call and challenge their own call in an attempt to play it as fair as possible. There just needs to be a rule stipulation to make it clear.
Very nice recap with some interesting in depth dives..Thanks...Keep up the good work!
Thank you for your time and posting. Great stuff as always. Agree, if you challenge and are wrong, you lose a time-out. You call it enthusiastic attitude, I call it poor sportsmanship. And Merchant should have been faulted for interference as he purposely screamed as the opponent tried to hit the ball. :)
Pickleball is America's fastest-growing sport and we like it #Pickleball
The timeout thing is similar to the nfl. Which is fine. The gamble gives it some excitement
I've seen people get hit in the head by basketballs, volleyballs, and even a baseball from 50' away . And this extremely light, yet firm ball coming in at what, 30mph?? C'mon.
Great video!
love your vids. but it’s “err vin”’not “irr vine”.
Actually, this weekend there was several instances especially on the singles day where players were allowed to challenge their own calls. It was a huge issue for the otherwise well-run tournament because we know in PPA and MLP, players are held to a higher standard of line calling as they can't questionably call a ball out and then review it to make sure they got it right. Stone and Nunnery were really questioning what was going on and later Catalano was as well. There needed to be a lot more transparency over the line calls in general.
By my calculations (and I can provide them), there is no possible way a pickleball hit by a human being can give a person a concussion.
The scientists that study concussions give a range of g-forces on the human head that can cause a concussion. They put this range in the 70 to 110 g's range. They measure this by putting accelerometers on players heads and in particular football players' helmets. So to cause a concussion, an object hitting a player's head must have enough kinetic energy to impart north of 70 g's. I calculated the amount of kinetic energy a pickleball has when hit at the speeds made possible by humans and current paddles. This range is 50-100 newtons. This amount of energy when converted to g-forces on the human head which has an average mass of 5kg is 1.2 - 2.2 g's. This is so far below the threshold of g-forces necessary to cause a concussion it is not even worth talking about. For comparison, a soccer ball traveling at 25 mph will transfer about 9 g's on the human head, and this happens multiple times a soccer match without any ill effects on the players.
She was obviously rattled by the event and something else could have been going on, but it was not a concussion caused by a pickleball.
Love ur videos!!
Great content. I suppose if the ball hits squarely on or near the temple--and it did--even a pickleball can cause a mild concussion. Too bad. Jesse is an amazing player. Props to her for going at it in singles! One criticism: "Conversate?!?" Bleh! Go with "converse" instead. As Miriam Webster warns, "conversate is a nonstandard form, and widely frowned upon . . . ." Seriously, great video.
❤ your content mate, keep up the great work. Heads up on a Title typo - should be 'Withdraw', not 'Withdrawal'. 😉
I'm really surprised Jesse couldn't play. I've been smoked pretty hard in the head. It kind of sucks and hurts, but I've never felt like I was anywhere near being concussed. I'm not playing pros either though!
I find it highly unlikely a concussion force could be imparted by a light plastic ball. 60 mph is about as fast as a ball can be hit and with the weight I just dont think its possible to concuss someone. And I have had several concussions myself from other sports. I think Jesse wanted an out.
I like the way everyone is "guessing". I've been hit in the temple, very lightly, and had to stop playing for a few minutes. Only Jesse knows, everyone else has no idea how hard she was hit. And if you listen, it was the medics who said she couldn't play.
@@Mr.DJones seems like a rather weak hit to me with imparted spin. More of a reaction hit. Listen how much longer his 2nd hit at her which hit her head took compared to the 2nd last.
They really need to amp up the line calling technology. It's impossible to get every call correct...especially when on the run with your head moving.
The word is withdraw.
Players should be wearing eyewear if only for the possibility of a ball to the eye because it only takes one shot and we only have 2 eyes. Probably more important the damaging affects of the SUN, 5-10% of all new skin cancer are to the lower eyelids playing middle of the afternoon when sun is most intense is something going to affect players years in the future.
Like the channel. Hate the sound effects.
lol... concussion protocol! seriously
Seems like the medics were overly cautious on this.
Merchant was hard to watch.
I would love to get into pro pickleball, but these refs gotta do a better job. It gets annoying these refs calling things out, that aren’t out.
Conversate? A friend recently sustained an eye injury playing badminton. Not from the shuttlecock but from a face strike by her partner's racquet. Still no vision in that eye despite an operation to relieve pressure. Watching that face whack makes me think I might start wearing my safety b'minton goggles again for pickle play.
I know, sounds stupid but it is a legit word.
No, not really. Converse is legit. Conversate is a uneducated attempt.

Pickle ball needs cameras you can’t trust people to make calls
I don't see how a wifflball concuss her
He didn't hit the ball that hard.i think maybe combined with being under physical stress, maybe high blood pressure from competing.i also did not know a ball could cause a concussion....pickle ball is meant to target the weak, the slower reacting, the weaknesses of tye opposing team.its wyat makes it great.thats how women play alongside men, young with old,,pro with mature ,etc...the slight sting of a ball will make you either practice more, improve faster by anybmeans possible, study the game more,or play more which is the bestbway.trial by fire.the more you are tagged the more you improve.if you think the miniscule pain of getting tagged is more than you can bare, then sit on the sidelines and pay attention, and do other things😢 to improve..the sooner you tag someone always at the kitchen, and the harder you tag them, the better chances you or your team have to win.i always try to tag early as possible,in the most trnder or frightening aras.no remorse.its the gwme.its what makes it great?dodgeball....one of the greatest of all games.the fat,the slow, tye non attentive, the weak, the scared, etc.get drilled early ,get no gametime xpirience and sit and watch..pickleball says let that person play right across or beside a much greater player, and says keep playing ,keep learning, keep improving.anr they do on the fasttrack...
No way this gave her a concussion. WTF
Not trying to start anything, but she also has said numerous times that she feels she is breaking glass ceilings for people of color because people of color do not play pickle ball. Not sure how people of color are being prevented from playing, but whatever.
Women get concussions easier than men, up to 10x as often.
Where did you receive your medical degree? Where did you do your residency? What protocols are done to determine if someone has a concussion? Did you examine the patient? If they have a concussion what are the remedies? Stfu.
@@zulalala123lol
I don't think it was an actual concussion, but was hit hard enough to keep her out of the game. It was the medics who stopped her from playing.
That withdrawal was weak. It wasn't a hard overhead...it was a high volley...and there isn't enough mass to give you a concussion. Maybe a bruise....
How much mass is required to produce a concussion? You people with this stuff are despicable.
@@offthefront7537minimum 10 pounds of force, the pickleball is less than 1 lb
@@teacopemHow on earth do you equate mass with force? Lol
@@offthefront7537 People make up stuff to fit their own narrative. Nobody knows how hard Jesse was hit except Jesse. Everyone else is just guessing.
No you’re right a pickleball is not able to concuss someone, it’s a pickleball.
Thank goodness, we finally have a neurosurgeon voicing an opinion. Or just a person who knows nothing about concussions. You decide.
@@Mr.DJones 22 gram ball
So mere protective eyewear will not suffice in shielding these brave athletes? I say we need pickleball helmets! I propose a helmet not unlike an American Football helmet except, perhaps, twice (or three times) as large!
They’re not athletes, they are Pickleball players
@@kenyule Thank you! Your point only adds support to my position! Non-athletes need helmets even more than athletes! Truth be told, the fact that most of us fail to consistently wear helmets (with sturdy face masks) every day only demonstrates how far we are from a fully safe and egalitarian society. Why are race car drivers the only ones wearing helmets when it only takes a head-on collision at 32 miles per hour to liquify a human brain? Universal mandatory helmets are a no-brainer!
No one cares about this social activity.
So why is it growing so fast? Lol
@@garyk2629 growing because anyone can do it, takes no skill.
