  • In this video, I am testing out the Protege clarinets by Backun. These are great clarinets for anyone who is looking for a great clarinet that won't break the bank. It's ideal for younger students who are ready for a "step up" instrument, school music teachers, and adult amateurs.

Once again Dr Larkin you have made a fabulous video. I agree the cocobolo is a great clarinet. I have played with a cocobolo moba barrel for several years on a pair of R13s from the 1970s with much success. It is of course very much personal So I think and instrument totally made of cocobolo as you have demonstrated it’s very well worth trying. I think Mr Bacun is somewhat of a trailblazer with his designs. Thank you so much for another great demonstration. Bill. UK

I purchased a Protege in cocobolo less than a year ago. I did get the extra Eb key, mainly because my other clarinet, an older Buffet, doesn't have one. I wanted to try something new (that helps explain the cocobolo as well). Thus, I'm far from an expert in the use of this key. I can say that the Backun implementation seems nicely reachable to me. But there's another important factor that I think you should consider: the key doesn't get in the way when you DON'T want to use it. I was concerned that if it projected too far, I might bump it inadvertently on occasion. But that really hasn't been a problem with the Protege.

That’s a fair consideration, but if the player’s hand position is relaxed, curved, and coming straight over the keys (not at an upward angle), he/she should not have any issues avoiding the key when it is not needed. This key is so far away that I have to angle my hand down to reach it, which is not good for hands like mine.
