I never thought about the angle of reflection matching the angle of incidence as the reason for slice shots staying low, but it makes perfect sense. Thanks for teaching me something new.

What a privileged mind you got!! I'm amazed at how you can recall every detail you talked about some videos ago and use them to teach and remind us of all the important facts to retain. Thanks a million. I owe you a lot. If you and your family ever want to travel to Spain, count on my house and everything you'd need. I'll be delighted to have you and take you to enjoyable places.

Hey Ryan I love this! I was just wondering if you can do a video on returning a lefty serve? It's seems like there's only 3-4 videos on youtube when you search. I would love your input on how to return the lefty serve on both the Ad and Deuce side!

    Hello Ryan.
I had folliwed almost all your videos from France since lockdown and that was more that helpful.
Your capacity to use simple words for complex tennis technics + your humility + humour speeads a lot of confidence on our tennis.
    Some
    "Dont judge yourself"
    "Cross court is your friend"
"Give five five on forward "
"Grab a glass of water on the toss"
You should definitly make some conférences ;)
Again thanks for all your valuable videos because these are all high quality explained.
Let us know if you ve planned to come over France :) we ll be happy to welcome you.
    Karim

Ryan, Another great lesson. Also, a friend borrowed my Top Spin Pro. He is thinking of buying his own. Do you still have an affiliate link for the Top Spin Pro? Thanks, Bob

Thanks Ryan. I try to always use your videos for singles and doubles strategies in every match. Could you by chance make a video on dealing with opponent who hits with much more power than you, it could be served, ground strokes, I’ll leave that to your discretion. I just know that when facing someone with significantly more power than myself the last thing I want to do is try to match power for power. I usually try to slice ball low or hit moonballs preferably to their weaker side. The key word is try Hahah.

    1. When the ball has spin, the angle of bounce (as you call reflection) is not the same as angle of incident. This is apparent when you toss a ball vertically with spin and watch its bounce.
    2. Specifically for a topspin shot, yes the angle of incidence is steeper, but the kick is due to the spin of the ball - in fact if the ball is topspun fast enough its horizontal velocity can even increase after the bounce!

I’m well aware that the spin changes the reflection angle. I was simply making a simple reference. In fact, if two balls hit the ground at the same angle and one as topspin and the other has backspin, the topspin ball leaves at a lower angle. Thanks!!

Yeah, as a mechanical engineer, I can say you are incorrect about #2; it is all about the angle of incidence. Sure, the spin has an effect, but in the OPPOSITE direction of what we see in sharply hit groundstrokes. Topspin SHOULD drive the ball forward and down, not create a kick. Backspin SHOULD drive the ball up and back. These things happen on a ball near a 90 degree fall like a lob or dropshot, but we see the opposite affect in common baseline ground strokes. What we see in a horizontal topspin shot is that the ball is so affected by the aerodynamics, it drives the ball down to the point that the angle of incidence is much greater than we recognize. This causes the ball to pop up more, even though the spin is techincally working against that. So yeah, the angle of reflection is a little different that the angle of incidence due to the spin, but a topspin serve or groundstroke kicks up due to the angle of incidence, IN SPITE of the spin's effect.

interesting how much underspin he added to the volley.. his racquet was far below the net after the shot

    • @2MinuteTennis
      @2MinuteTennis  2 ปีที่แล้ว

You are correct! That type of technique can be difficult to manage for many club players. That’s why I suggest less downward and more outward movement with a bit less spin. Thanks!!

    What did I learn today?
    Incidence equals reflection.
