      it will definitely come back in a few years, the 2010's are soon going to be revived and soft grunge is definitely participating. honestly I can't wait for it to come back, I've always dreamed of being a soft grunge girl.

    You brought up a lot of really valid points. I remember getting into the soft grunge style at a very young age (about the time that I joined social media) and mental illness was definitely romanticized. I think that heavily impacted our view of it today. Although mental illness should be normalized and accepted, I find that some people will lie or pretend to have disorders that they haven't been diagnosed with (or genuinely have symptoms of). On the other side of the spectrum, during that time a lot of people DEVELOPED disorders as a result of the soft grunge aesthetic/community (particularly eating disorders). I still really like this type of style but it is nice to see someone shed some light on the prevalent issues that were in it's community.

    • @eilidhcathcart5024
      @eilidhcathcart5024 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I don't think these people lie abt having disorders, I think they genuinely believe they have them/have symptoms of the disorders because they're desperate to make sense of their feelings, not realising that the traits of mental illness they have aren't actually traits of mental illness, rather just normal human emotions

    Ive been on tumblr since 2010 I remember always posting pastel goth and soft grunge aesthetics while listening to 5sos thinking I was a badass. i saw the box water and blk water at Ross a few months ago. I was shocked bc I never seen them in person but it brought back so many memories seeing it.

    THIS WAS MY AESTHETIC back then and Effy Stonem def was an influence on me AND I started listening to Nirvana and Lana. I am glad you mentioned the romanticizing mental illness and making smoking look cool because at 16 I wanted to be Effy without realizing how that could've been dangerous.

    Another thing I always think about is how common in grunge/emo/goth/alternative communities it was for grown men to talk to teenage girls! I went through a bunch of styles as a teen but wow the alternative community seemed like it had the most outright predatory men 🤮 even a ton of musicians in the warped tour scene would talk to teenage fans girls in inappropriate ways

    At the time I was too young to have been part of it, nowadays I just look at is as like “wow it was probably nice be part of that community back then” it makes me nostalgic for something I’ve never even lived through

  • @buttershy_

    i was 11 in 2014, a literal child, but i was a loser with no friends, so i found my home in this era of tumblr. i was way too young to be into that 😂 i had no idea what any kind of mental illness actually was until later. but somehow it didn't cause me any damage and it's still so nostalgic to me. although if i was in the position of my mutuals on tumblr, i would be mortified and incredibly concerned to find out i was interacting with a 6th grader!! it was also the era of kinnies and i was mutuals with a TON of people who were kinning invader zim charatcers lmao

  • @amentrison2794
    @amentrison2794 3 ปีที่แล้ว +46

    Definitely my aesthetic. I still dress this way lol. That being said, I think something that should be talked about is how the romanticism of mental illness in these communities forms. Often times it's framed as kids who were perfectly fine being corrupted by media with dangerous themes and just trying to fit in to get pity points, which absolutely does play a part, but that's not all of it. Oftentimes the people who use the internet the most are the ones who are lonely and depressed in their real life and who use the internet as an escape. I was an undiagnosed neurodivergent kid who was passed over by the school system that was supposed to recognize my mental condition. I had no social skills, basically no friends, and was dealing with fatphobia from my own family at home. Those images of sad text in bold font over grungy images spoke to many kids like me who would have been depressed and dealing with eating disorders regardless of tv shows like skins. The cliche "i wish someone would understand me" content was more than just teens being angsty; it was an outlet for mentally ill teens. But it is very interesting to me how that kind of content got picked up by the larger teen audience and caused them to romanticize the experience of mental illness without dealing with the underlying issues that caused people to start creating that kind of content in the first place and that is absolutely something that should be talked about.

    I've been on tumblr since 2011 (and still am to this day) and this era went COMPLETELY over my head. I did not realise this was a thing whatsoever. My dash was only stuff about animation (which is the career I wanted and ended up persuing), book fanart, 1D fanfiction.... there was an occasional black and white photo with depressed quotes but I'd always brush them off. I've never realised this had such an impact in my generation lmao and I did watch the majority of these stuff that compose the aesthetic of soft grunge. Skins is still a guilty pleasure to me (although my favorite character by far is Pandora, and in second place Jal so...)

    The fact that I remember many of these images on my tumblr blog 😂 you did a really good job describing the trend exactly how I remember it. It *was* very 90s based and for some reason many of the other 2014 grunge videos I've seen miss that critical point? All the details you went into with the fashion, items and music are spot on!!! So I can tell you were very in the thick of it, as I was, and it still influences our style today :') 🖤 very glad I am not too affected by the romanticisation of mental illness any more tho, and all the other terrible sh*t it romanticised.

    RE: Effy Stonem. I actually liked the portrayal of her symptoms when she had that really bad episode (some people say she has psychotic depression but honestly her state also reminded me of mixed episodes from my own bipolar disorder), but the way the other characters act around her is definitely an issue. 💀

    You know!!!!! I’m from this era too and have been getting annoyed at younger teen’s modern take on soft grunge, so I was curious and dug around on TH-cam to see if someone was talking about it right. Also I’m using tumblr again and again I see more tiktok influenced newage sadgirl blogs that don’t not quite hit right. Tbh I think in 2023 (and maybe this is just me reminiscing over scene slowly dying out around 2013 and hatred for how bland LA/NY style influences modern styles) people are wanting to return to more alt styles and away from cookie cutter ones. You saying how soft grunge was the perfect blend of girly but dark made me super happy because it reminded me that being more “girly” (which I struggle with) in todays fashion era because of the color and styling. I still have some AA pieces in my closet (high waisted jeans, a velvet dress, the halter tank tops, you know damn well I never bought a tennis skirt cuz I never wanted to pay $90 for it) . I also loved soft grunge because the styling was for the most part attainable. You can’t catch me shopping on SHEIN and Zara once a month to keep up with the current look. Also kinda cackled when you said you have to wear skinny jeans for soft grunge because I’ve also kinda gotten used to baggier jeans and kinda wanted to put my skinny jeans to rest. And can’t tell me otherwise the music wasn’t superb around this era!!

    this video is amazing. there is everything i would include if i were to make a video about this aesthetic. talking about the tv shows and the characters you mentioned is very important because they had a huge impact on the community so it was very much needed!!
    it's crazy how the community was romanticizing mental health issues, literally dreaming about suicide and ending up at the hospital because of drugs/suicide attempt and didn't even think that it is not an ok thing to do... like idk it just blows my mind every time i think about those days on tumblr. i just hope that people who were actually dealing with mental health issues got the help they needed and are now ok.
    i definitely want this aesthetic to come back but without all of those problematic things.
    once again thank you.
    you did a great job 🖤

    I am so ready for 2014tumblr v2.0 because I would love to see more body types included, instead of romanticizing mental illness maybe romanticise self-care and accepting your mental struggles and fighting through it? I would love to see some Euphoria makeup included (as basically Euphoria is what Skins were at the time for us) and also maybe some dark academia aesthetic.

    I loved the video! when I was 12 I only wanted to be one of those girls on tumblr ahah, I would try everyday to do my make up like them (obviously a failure).
    I'm from italy, therefore the style became popular only a few years later, but the vibe was exacly the same.
    I only discovered later in the years Skins, I'm really grateful for that! I assume that if I had watched that kind of show at such young age, I would have probably romanticised all the "bad things".
    btw I still love the syle and I would love a comeback!
    i apologise for any grammatical mistake :)

    Funny to see the shift. Currently it's about cottagecore and that girl aesthetic etc as the main influence from tiktok. (Theres an interesting video on this specifically how it was created from isolation of the pandemic and famous people like Taylor Swift forwarding it more)
    2014 tumblr girl was all about dark, messy, eds/mental health romantising as the video said and now its about perfectionism - being the super healthy girl with cute outfits, grounded and in touch with nature, exercising a lot, having everything around you be aesthetically pleasing. For a while I thought this was good to encourage people to be their best selves but the dark side of this trend is actually teaching people that they need to be perfect. To wake up at 6am and be super productive everyday and somehow that will fully cure your depression. It's taken an opposite path from the previous aesthetic and now portrays mental health as a bad thing, notably during the time when everyone's mental health is at an all time low.
    I'm not staying these aesthetics are bad. I love the cottagecore trend and that seemingly is a lot more harmless than the "that girl" trend. But I haven't fully explored the negatives of cottagecore yet. I'm also aware there is a bunch of other trends going around and I'm beginning to see cottagecore die out but I'm just pointing out these ones as they were at the peak of the pandemic. Looking forward to the nostalgia in 5 years when everyone is talking about this 😂

    Effy was never really saved by Freddie and Cook. She even blamed them for making her crazy. Freddie tried his best to safe her because his dad couldn't safe his mom from k her self. the reason why he hates his dad until Effy almost k herself. Cook disappears after he k the psycho psychologist who k Freddie. So he's not trying to safe her anymore. The only reason why Effy has a good job in the 4. season (where other characters like cook and Emily appeared a second time too) is that she got an all A testimony from the currupted principal. She was never really safed. Skins UK definitely damaged our brains but to me, it shows that you can try to safe someone, you can help someone if they accept the help but you can't actually "safe" someone. You can't eliminate a mental health for someone. But you can k a psychologist...
