    Just stumbled upon this, and it comes at a time when I really need the education. I have inherited many pieces from my mother, cabinet pieces, dinner sets, silver and flatware. I have tried searching the internet and it is more confusing, like falling down a rabbit hole. Grandchildren and greats do not want the pieces, and I know they are not just Goodwill donations. I shall take photos and send them for your opinions.

    I remember back in the 90's, a coworker of mine introduced me to carnival, amberina, and Vaseline glass. I paid $20 for a Blenko, amberina bottle one time that was really intricately detailed. I really wished I'd have kept that one, it was beautiful. I now have a nice piece of cut glass (a pedestal compote), and a couple of clear dual-arm EAPC glass candle holders, with salt and pepper to match.

    Hi Dr.Lori, my Mother-In-Law has one of the souvenir pieces similar to the ones you presented today in your video. She acquired her piece from a public hanging and it has the date and the person's name that was hung etched into the glass. She's from Staunton VA. I don't know if this was a common practice but it creeps me out. My MIL is 93 and has been doing what tell others to do, pass things down before you die so you can see them enjoy. She has tried for years to pass that "souvenir" on to me, I don't want that bad juju in my home. I'm not a person that believes in a lot of nonsense but in this case, I'm embracing the little bit of French Creole blood in my veins. lol

    I like the green Fenton bottle. If the stopper wasn't glued into place, would it be for perfume, or something like vinegar?

    • @DrLoriV
      @DrLoriV  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Perfume bottles don’t typically have a spout because most perfumes are not meant to be poured. So, the green Fenton bottle with white hobnail design could be used as a cruet like for oil and vinegar or for water to add to a stiff drink or another pouring yet decorative purpose. Too bad about the glued stopper though. Great question! Thanks.

    The satin glass piece reminds me a little of two blue vases I found. They are goard shaped glass and look to be encased glaass. Here's the strange part - spouts to both vases lean outward. They are definitely blown glass. To me they look like urinals, but of course they're not, lol! At this point in my life, I should stop buying glass I can't identify.

    Can you tell me this please? Is it true that a chip is better than a crack as far as value and restoration?

    • @DrLoriV
      @DrLoriV  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The reason why I say that a chip is better than a crack when it comes to the type of damage in a piece of porcelain or other ceramic is because a chip is easier to repair than a crack. A chip, if you are lucky and have a clean break, can be reattached with an adhesive suitable to that material. A crack however negatively impacts and weakens the foundation of the ceramic piece. So, if I have to choose, I’ll take a chip over a crack any day.
