In this video, we spend a day in the life with an African street food vendor by the name of Akia. Akia has been selling waakye for about 4 years. waakye is a rice a beans dish that originates from the northern part of Ghana. Hello lovely people, so my laptop has finally given up on me and hence this video was impacted a little. It was supposed to be up yesterday. Do pardon me about the missing subtitles as well. Hoping to sort my laptop out today.
Akia is from the northern part of Ghana near Bolgatanga but she grew up in Koforidua hence why she speaks twi so fluently.
She has been making and selling waakye for 4years now. She used to make about 100ghs ($17.21) per day. Due to the pandemic she made some losses. She is currently trying to get back on her feet, she is currently breaking even.

i have never felt so lazy in my life, this hardworking ladies work for almost 20 hours and here i complain after an 8 hour shift with two 15 minute breaks and half an hour lunch, some of us are just so spoilt, thank you Jasmine and as for this ladies i wish you more blessings.
We are not spoilt. This is a result of colonialism. They take from Africa and leave the ppl to fin for self. And the euro currency has so much value. There is no reason she should be working this hard and long for 17.21 USD a day??? And paying her workers??? Smh. There has to be a revolt. This is inhumane. I admire her strength though.

Back home, waakye was my go to breakfast. The vendor in my neighborhood knew me so well all I had to do was confirm my usual order by making eye contact and nodding my head from a distance before getting to her stall. The youth and people in Ghana must not be lazy if I’m judging from this. Staring from the time the owner starts preparing to get food ready for her customers is overwhelming,Kudos to her. I was born in the caribbean 🇧🇧 Barbados to be precise and our food is similar. We cook black eye peas and rice also. We use the cow skin in soups.

Even when you’re sleeping, the aroma or flavors from the early morning cooking will wet your appetite and make you hungry.
This woman truly cares about her customers! "Ekaw" (don't know the english word) has been found to be very unhealthy and the fact that she could have simply used it to cook the beans and saved herself hours of hard work says it all. Most beans/ waakye sellers and even individuals use this because it makes the beans soften quicker and you don't have to keep stirring...so to find a seller who does not use it is pleasantly surprising. I'm truly very impressed.
Edit: “kanwu” not “ekaw” (forgive my initial spelling lol) is also called “saltpetre” or potassium nitrate (crystalline KNO3) in english. It is a substance used in the production of some soaps, gun power (or other explosives) and fertilisers. That is why it’s not very advisable for consumption.

Jasmine you are a gem and a savior. We were in Tema this week and I was saying I wish I new where to get the best waakye in Tema. Then today just a few days from my wishful thinking and you have granted my wish. I am going to get some of her waakye. When we are staying at our place in Accra we get waakye at Labone or Cow Lane near Makola. However, we now spend more time at our other home closer to Tema and I miss eating good yummy waakye. I like waakye, growing up an older woman called Emmaabu used to sell white waakye at the then SSB head office near ATTC Accra. Oh I am having great memories and salivating too. Hiho, hiho, off to Akia’s place tomorrow morning to buy waakye with gari fortor and I want it served in the waakye leaves. The leaves adds to the authenticity. Leaves are biodegradable, environmentally friendly, and way better than plastic. I like that she washes and cleans her leaves. Jasmine you are great!
