Back in 1999 a late model racer local to me that my Dad knew named Mark Martin "The Baxter Bullet" went and bought a Billy Moyer GVS/Mastersbuilt still lettered and numbered like Billy's car was in 1998. On the way home to Baxter Tennessee they decided to stop by at Cleveland Speedway for night one of a two night show to get a few laps where all they did was hot lap and qualify on night 1 of the show. Well he ended up breaking the track record and setting on the pole but he had never planned on staying overnight so they came on home that night. He could've made it back the next day but he decided to go race at our local track instead. He was a pretty wild dude and known as a local racing legend. R.I.P.
It cost me 3500 dollars to run the 200 this weekend. Max won Thursday and Friday and broke a motor on Saturday during the 200! It’s crazy expensive to run it . Tires were the majority of the cost .
Being from NY and following big blocks my whole life, especially being at the 200 saturday, I dont blame Williamson at all. Big Block series (specifically STSS) are starting to bounce checks because an owner can't quite make ends meet the right way, and with the complete hell hole it is with chassis's, suspensions, engine rules, its not worth wasting your time fighting for a small sliver of payment when you can let the same guys win the big races, and go beat smaller teams and get almost the same amount.
@@TJIngerson thats my point, why waste resources when you're fighting to even make money back on the trip, when you can just go to a less competitive track, and get good money that you know wont bounce the next night.
Modifieds are at a weird and fucked up spot. Between panhard rules and other little details if your a regional weekend warrior you need 3 or 4 rolling chassis just to run regularly in PA / NY / NJ. The cars are far from cheap and they absolutely chew up parts. Engines are still spec 358 or the big blocks / big inch small blocks that easily touch super late model or 410 sprint costs but it doesn't pay or draw a crowd the same way the other 2 do. So no doubt winning 10k and making 9k sounds like a better night than having to get 4th in to even break even against the big boys regardless of your opinion on "puppykicking"
Tim Estenson won at Shelby county speedway for the MSTS 410 show $7500 to win/500 to start last night as well. Small 305/410 show but Shelby county speedway is a helluva surface. Would be cool to see some big big names show up next year for it!
Williamson mostly campaigns his own #6 car in the Small Block 358 Modified events, not Big Block races. Now I won't get into heavy details because I'm not looking to be sued by anyone, but let's just say that there's some financial issues that have arisen with STSS lately and called in to question whether or not the series is good for the checks they write at the pay window. I've seen articles saying that those issues are/have been resolved, and I've seen other sources say it's an on-going concern. That could also play into the team's decision at a race claiming to pay $53,000 to the winner alone. That being said, His hotlap session wasn't just for attendance purposes, he was also awarded minimum show up points towards the championship.
Yeah, there's a lot of talk of what the real deal is between Behrent#3 and Fonda200/STSS/BDRspeed. It's just not about keeping perfect attendance. Haha
They said it was just business. 4 tires for heat, 4 tires for first 100, 4 tires for 2nd 100. Barrel of fuel. Pit passes for all pit crew. The 2RJ did the same thing. Went to Devil's Bowl and won.
#24Strong #RaceForChase🏁 Buddy is on fire, 4 wins in last 5 races. He's been a championship contender, just needs reliable equipment, maybe the bugs are finally worked out of the Toyota motors. Super nice guy, met him in the pits. My hometown kid done good

Hi Justin - could you get me a ride in the big block modifieds hot lapping and parking it? I got pretty good at doing so with Trone. It’s getting cold at night in Stevie Smith’s shed and could use a new blanket. Thanks mate !
Dollar for dollar, we're racing for less money today than we ran for 20,30,40 years ago. That's why when H/L or the Outlaws come to town, we stay home. If you add up what driver and crew (as locals) would pay to get in to the event and race, the sanctioning body made money on us given where we would generally finish. It's just not worth it. We just run local shows to have our fun and try to break even at the end of the night.
Since Stewie and Sheppard had (and now still have) won every one of the reincarnated 200s, it seems like solid logic to me to go where they aren't. The secret financial stuff we can't talk about make it a better business decision not to compete. As for hot lapping I assume it's something to do with attendance for year end stuff as mentioned.
