    I really like the method of clamping the chain in the end of the vise with the chain falling off beyond the tooth you are filing. So many benefits to this method, you won't hit the chain link, and you certainly don't have to worry about the tooth moving around when your filing......well done.

    Thanks for the great video! I had purchased the exact same Vallorbe file and have been practicing this sharpening method based on other good videos. This video just reinforced all the basics in an extremely clear visual way. I keep one saw dedicated with a square chisel chain and only use it on clean trees where I know I won't hit rocks. The other saws get round filed and it's all a happy mix.

  • @tasmedic

    Interesting. I was taught to file upwards and into the top corner of the cutter, not downwards, the reason being that the intention is to form a burr at the sharp edge of the top plate and side plate. Filing downwards prevents a burr forming, and I was told that making the burr guaranteed the sharpest edge possible. This principle is taken from knife sharpening. Also, the burr is easy to see when you're filing, and stopping as soon as you see the burr makes it possible to remove the minimum amount of steel to get the sharpest edge. If you can't see the burr, then you're basically guessing how much steel you need to remove, since there is no visual cue. I'm very happy with the sharpness of my chains (I have 5 chainsaws), but I might give this idea a go and see what I think to it. I also sharpen both the right and left pointing cutters alternately by standing in front of the tip of the bar. This avoids having to go round the whole chain twice in order to sharpen all the cutters. Just my 2c. I'm now thinking I should make my own video!

    • @drd1924
      @drd1924 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Agreed in all aspects. I like to file outward also to form the burr....I might say though that this guy in the vid looks like he has been doing this a long time so likely......
      Takes the exact same amount of strokes off each tooth.
      However this is not always the real world scenario and it takes as many strokes as necessary to get the tooth sharp.
      Meaning if one or 2 teeth take 6 file strokes while the rest of the chain only takes 4 ....I am going to leave it
      And not go over the whole rest of the chain just to take 2 extra strokes off the rest of the teeth just to make them all exactly the same.

    I have been watching several channels on square filing and at an age where change has to be questioned (my wife calls it interrogation). 1) Why? faster cut? ego? 2) does it dull quick 3) how forgiving is the file should you get a stroke wrong. 4) does the end justify the means? 5) Is it worth me giving it a shot? Yes! Thanks for the lesson

    • @bob_frazier
      @bob_frazier 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      We're in the same boat. I'm finding that changing from round to square file to be a real challenge. Worth it? Not sure yet. I can round file perfectly. Of the age where I have the time, but it's like deciding to use the opposite hand to write with. Takes some real concentration. Good luck!

      from what I've done so far, I am counting on four or five full comp, 3/8, 72D (20 inch) sharpenings per file. I have finally seen some by Vallorbe on the internet, and Madsin's sell Pferd I believe, (or it might be Baily's that sells them). Can I have your opinion on something: At 9:54 , just over the second 'o' in Oregon, the curve under the file's lower edge appears to have been cleaned out with a small file prior to him sharpening, so there is a relief for the lower angle. When I sharpen mine, the file binds, and yanks at the chain, I have seen it with everyone else except this guy. I think he pre-filed the gullet to clear out any lower obstruction. What do you think ? (I will be trying it my way to see if it helps).

    Good video...... I really have a good laugh when people talk about hard wood though.... Trust me, everything you cut is Balsa Wood compared to the Jarrah and Buloke and Mallee that lurks in the dark and dangerous corners of some continent in the Southern Hemisphere.

    Great video and the chain cuts realy fast, one question though, can the file be opperated the other way? Like the usual round filing but with the same angles?

    Любопытно. А мы всё круглыми натфелями точим.

    Great video, the color on the faces and angles are really nice, easy to get right away what you mean. Great explanation too.
    Did you noticed if the chain stays sharp longer than a round profile?

    This vid convinced me to try square filing. Where can I buy the LC 10020- 2279-8 in the US? Google didn't help.
