I vividly remember seeing one of these at Chuck E. Cheese growing up. It scared the shit out of me, especially the introduction cutscene, and kept me up at night worrying about a fire starting in my house. This really takes me back. Not in a really bad way, it always looked like a fun game.

+NASCARFAN160 That's the only place where I saw this cabinet too! I found a bunch of tokens when I was 10 and a good few years after the local CEC closed so we made a trip out to one about half an hour away and played in the arcade like queens, racking up tickets and playing everything! Good to know I'm not the only one who had nightmares... I seem to recall the game over screen being rather dark as your firefighters were surrounded by fire.

I knew I couldn’t have been the only one who was terrified at this intro sequence. I was more scared of this than I was House of the Dead. By that time I was old enough to know that monsters weren’t real, but I knew for a fact that home and building fires were real. In fact, I think it was because of this game that I often insisted my parents turn all the lights off before we ever left the house. I was worried a bulb or wire might short circuit or overheat and burn the house down.
That being said, this was a fun game to play. I even played it with my grandmother once, and we made it all the way through to the end. Easily one of the greatest moments of my childhood.

Bro I played this game at chuck e cheese when I was a kid. I remember being terrified of being in a burning building because of it. Still played the game anyway lol.

For a game released in 1999, this game had the most technically advanced graphics of its time. Sega said this game was almost impossible to run on anything at the time other than their very expensive, custom-built, Sega Hikaru arcade system.
It was the first 3D game to use Phong shading, the most widely used shading technique today. PC couldn't do effective Phong shading until the ATI Radeon 9700 graphics card in 2002 and consoles couldn't do it until the Xbox 360 in 2005.
It was also the first game to feature muliple light sources per polygon and realistic particle effects, with the lighting effects and the fire, smoke, electricity and water effects being more advanced than anything on consoles or PC for several years.
The Sega Hikaru was like the Sega Model 3 of its time.

Razor Edge Yeah, the Hikaru was incredibly advanced for the time. The Model 3 was a huge step forward in polygonal capabilities from anything else at the time(it looks better than even many Xbox titles) and the Hikaru had shading capabilities that were completely unmatched until the turn of the millennium.

And the Hikaru was more powerful than Naomi 2 subsequently released .

Brave FireFighters was the first game to use a static effect, not Namco, Sega and WOW's Vampire Night and Ninja Assault are the first games to use that effect.

The setting of this game is a downtown hotel. I say the developers were inspired by the real life Winecoff Hotel fire when making this game about firefighters. Also working in a story that a recently re-elected mayor was having a celebration in the hotel's party room when a basement generator overloads and causes the fire to break out trapping the mayor, his family and a few party guests trapped in the burning hotel. TV Tropes calls this location a city hall but clearly the game calls it a hotel.

Call me crazy, but I swear there was another version of the attract mode where the cause of the fire is not some electrical box but a furnace or oven exploding. Does anyone else remember such a thing?

There was a modified version of the game that does exist, but it was specifically donated to the Kyoto City Disaster Prevention Center which had a totally different scenario, and storyline. But as for details of it, I have no idea

I remember seeing this game at Chuck E. Cheese on my 18th birthday in 2003. However, the game didn't seem anything up my alley at the time. Now looking back, I now regret my decision..

I wish I could play this game again...absolutely amazing game for the time, and a blast playing considering it's unique controls as a fire hose instead of just buttons. Since this is on real hardware, I'd love to see the board actually working while the system is up and running, and possibly a play through. Too bad there is no good emulation technique out there right now for this...

There's a Demul emulator that emulates Sega Hikaru and other Sega hardware.

It still has to get ROM to RAM or do some preprocessing probably. Luckily loading times don't seem to be too long - which makes the loading screens a bit weird.
Thanks a lot for this great upload. It's the first time I see the game the way it is supposed to look. The video captures and emulations just don't capture the motion blur effects, lighting, animation etc.

    • @NaokisRC
      @NaokisRC 6 ปีที่แล้ว

I was speaking to Mentski (youtube him lol) about the Hikaru and it's funny how the system is so difficult to emulate properly just due to all the shading involved. Looking at Demul or the like just makes it look like a 3DFX Voodoo game, where the real thing is immense.

I saw this at a Chuck E Cheese when I was around 10 and the opening cutscene scared me. I played a bit of it but then I felt terrible when I wasn’t able to continue the game. It freaked me out that much.

    • @dalaxdercrisper957

It's because of the fire. When I was a kid, having fire around easily traumatized me while I almost burn myself playing matches. It was dumb thing but what do you expect as a kid.
