When my kids were little and i made puffed sleeves, I would make a stay sleeve (I think that's what it's called) which is a straight sleeve that you set into the armscye along with the puff sleeve. Since the puff is attached at top and bottom to the straight sleeve it won't be weighted down.
Oh that dress is SPECTACULAR!!! Dupioni is so lovely to work with. Made my dress for my daughters wedding out of gold dupioni. I just took apart an old pair of well loved shorts and used it as a pattern for a new pair. Wore the new ones I sewed all through a vacation in the Caribbean and love them! . Can’t wait to make another couple of pairs
Hi there Carly, my wife and I both said that we could imagine your dress being worn both on a fashion catwalk and Harajuku Bridge, it would definitely be at home on both. Oh and "Anne with an E" would would really rock those sleeves. A great piece.
Oh that's so lovely! Thank you both for watching. Anne of Green Gables has been one of my favourite movies and characters since I was young so I love that!!! Love her big puff sleeves!
Those sleeves! They are amazing!! And the whole dress’s volume is spectacular! I love the freedom of your sewing and the experimenting , I am always scared to deviate from the pattern but everything you do looks beautiful xx
Oh my word this dress is so gorgeous!! I'm such a newbie sewer but I'm currently working on my first project which is a set of matching PJs for my little sister and I from some thrifted bed sheets. Nothing fancy, but enough to teach a good set of skills to get going with (sewing straight lines, collars, buttons, elastic waistband, faux fly).
With the warmer months coming up here in the US I have plans to work on PJ shorts and a top (matching set) and I want to try and make some bike shorts and I have plans for one spring/summer dress so far.
You could make the big sleeve pattern (the experiment you didn't take) stand up on top by adding very stiff interfacing... just a thought. Love the fabric and design! Thanks for sharing your creative process ❤️
This video was amazing! It is just so wonderful to see you being so excited and happy about your new space and being creative with new materials. Thank you so much for sharing your process. I just recently found your channel and it really sparks new inspiration and motivation for me to sew again. I studied fashion design and I feel like I lost the fun in sewing because it just turned into a chore at one point and I became such a perfectionist... It is amazing to see you not being scared of making mistakes and how you always try new things and learn along the way. This is really the way it should be! :) I’m really looking forward to seeing more of you and your creations
Aw thank you so much!!! heheh it is exciting! Aw that means a lot. I'm glad a little beam on inspiration may have landed in your world to help get back into it again! I'm sorry to hear about fashion school being hard - I've heard it can be brutal. Hope you can get back to making magic & enjoying your talents!!! Take care mate & thank you for watching.
By the way, you can gather using your serged edge. You just need to pull one of the needle threads (as opposed to the looper stitches). It may save you some time if you have a lot of gathering to do.
This dress reminds me of a magical girl transformation sequence! I'm working on redoing a hem on a gown and making some grocery store tote bags (wide enough to put an 18 carton of eggs in)!
This is the first video of yours I’m watching and I love the energy and your smile is so cute! Also, the dress turned out so wonderful and I love how it’s not cinched at the waist but instead loose which gives it a fairy godmother type of vibe. Also, I’m getting into sewing soon and my first project will be a sailor-inspired outfit complete with a crochet hat or maybe a straw hat. Hoping to do that in a few months.
Ah HI!! Thank you for watching! I love a loose, flowy dress - feels so fun and easy to wear! That sounds so exciting - I hope it all goes well. Keep us updated on your projects!
Wow stunning dress! Such gorgeous colours and fabric; it's not my typical style but I want one lol. Also, loving your super cutie wholesome vibe, definitely subscribing and can't wait to follow along :D
What an amazing dress🩵💚💛🩷💜 and lovely new sewing space😍Still pretty cold here in Sweden so I’m working to finish my a-line strap dress in wool before I begin the more summer sewing plans.
Insanely gorgeous! Those colours are a dream together! Yay for trying new things and experimenting and learning ☺ I'm summoning up the energy to tackle my mending pile this weekend... 😖
Beautiful dress! Beautiful space! Beautiful you! 💕 I'm making little micro cross stitches and then sewing fabric around them in a "log cabin" or "courthouse steps" style and these turn into quilt blocks! Deb xx 🤗💕
@@fromcarlyb It’s great fun! Perfect because I can do the cross stitches with my family when they want to watch television or a film, and then sew the fabric on during my sewing time! 😊 Deb xx 🤗
The sleeves are definitely sleeving 😍 I'm working on a 2 headed teddy bear with Frankenstein stitching, I spent 2 hours yesterday hand stitching a eye detail for one of the heads 😂 Also quick question, what did you use to create your website? Being in Australia also, I'm not sure where to start my online store.
hahahah they are!!! Oh that sound spooky and very cool! Hope it goes great. I did my website through Skillshare. I used Wix originally but really do like how Skillshare is laid out!
What a beaut! I have 9 of my dad's old shirts and I want to use the buttons and buttonholes to make a fitted dress. Have you any suggestions or better still video on how I could do this? Nx
heyyyy love your video!! always wait for your content!! could you please elaborate a bit more on how you do gathering stitches? is it regular thread and what length of stitch you use? do you cut the gathering stitches thread once you sew in the middle? trying to learn :)
Aw that is SO LOVELY!! Thank you for watching mate. Of course. I use regular polyester thread. Mine comes from an industrial supplier in big 5000m cones. The brand is Coats Astra. I use the longest stitch length on my machine - on my industrial that is a 5, but on my domestic it is a 4. I sew two lines of these long straight stitches next to each other making sure not to backstitch at the beginning or end. Then you can carefully pull on the two top threads of these lines & it should gather your work! Once you sew the securing stitch in the middle (with a smaller stitch length) you can remove the visible gathering stitch using an unpicker or sometimes it's easy to just pull it out. I hope that helps a bit! Gathering was hard for me at first, but the more you do it, the easier it gets!
Yaaay new video!! Do you do any markets? I imagine most markets would not be the target audience. I know i struggle with finding my audience in markets around brisbane
Thank you!! Me too! Corner bookmarks sound so practical and clever! Hope they turn out great. You'll appreciate the embroidery so much once they're done I'm sure!! In terms of knowing when I could sew full time.... I kind of had a weird introduction to sewing because I started when I quit my job due to anxiety & health issues - so I was just doing something to keep busy. I chewed through my savings for a year or so, but in that year my business was picking up some momentum so I just kept working on it. I had a few other side gigs throughout this year to help tie me over. I was always kind of freelancing and working on a few different jobs at a time, so it wasn't tooooo scary to try adding something new to the mix! (I'm also child free so I only have to take care of myself which helps!!)
@@fromcarlyb well, I'm certainly glad you kept with it; I love your makes and you have such a wonderful energy when it comes to creating 💕 thanks for taking the time to answer so thoughtfully; I really appreciate it!
I want you to show how to make a triangle sun dress. Sleeveless, gathered at the top full at the bottom, string gathered with simple bow at the back (or front)
Watching from Germany: You Aussies are not allowed to use the walls of your rentals?! There are wall filling pastes at the hardware store. It’s so easy to use. I thought German rental policies are taff. 😅
hello all the way to Germany!!! We are not meant to no!! It is silly that you can't use the wall space effectively in rental properties... but I understand. Lucky I am allowed to put my peg board up here though - it's the best!!
I’m making 5 three-tiered gathered skirts for 5 sisters I’ve known since e each of them were born. Btw, I love this dress and those sleeves are the “puffiest” as in Anne of Green Gables. 🩵🤎🩶💜
hey mates! hope you like this lil video!! let me know what projects you're working on this week!
I’m working on a matcha colored crochet pull over sweater for spring 💚
a winning personality. you're enthusiasm for sewing has me feeling inspired to get back to it
You are very talented.
To make the top of the sleeves stay puffed up, you can retro-fit a little gathered tulle.
When I clicked on this video I thought it was a Ghibli inspired dress, the thumbnail had that same kind of an air of child like wonder. I love it ❤
OH I LOVE THAT!!!!!

Thank you so much!!!! It can definitely be scary to go rogue but sometimes it's just a fun time (and good for learning!) Thank you for watching mate!!
The star clips are so clever! Thanks for sharing!
Aren't they!! A treasure!
The way I love the star clips 😮 may have to make my own version. Loved the energy in this video and getting to hang!
They're so special and cute!!! Good luck! Thank you for hanging with me

You can add a band of stiff tulle around the shoulder and the arm band. This will help it remain full

heheh hey!! I don't. I'm not sure if it would work for my business! I just sell online atm.
So you turn the tension right up, the stitch length to its longest and it just gathers? Just on a normal straight stitch? I have to try this!
I love this new space!!! so excited to see what will get made in this space
Thank you!! Me too! Corner bookmarks sound so practical and clever! Hope they turn out great. You'll appreciate the embroidery so much once they're done I'm sure!!

Can you please let me know where I can get the pattern to the top you are wearing in the beginning? 🩷🫶🏻
Love!!! Where are your glasses from?
kits eyewear!!
When I see peg boards of others it feel so nice. But sadly if i'll keep things out they will catch dust in a day.. 😢
Aw my peg board is my pride and joy! Always inspires me to make something because everything is out!

I wonder what that fabric would look like on an 1800’s gown…🧐
