As someone who spent over 20 hours drawing 3 submissions and didn’t get picked, it’s infuriating to think that someone used AI… AND took up more slots than allowed! If they don’t make it a point to not allow AI next year I won’t bother submitting anything. I’ve been an artist my entire life and this is like a slap in the face to the 3 decades of practice I put into learning how to draw.
I full agree! UPDATE: I’m about to make a follow up video but it looks like Pokémon is disqualifying those A.I. entries and selecting new contestants to fill those spots 🎉

@the_absolute_light I want to say it's already in the rules. It just wasn't immediately noticed by judges. Luckily they are hearing us and selecting new contestants. My guess was they were investigating first before making a decision on what to do.
A rule in all of life: Never expect anyone to value your skills, but keep those close who do.
Why aren't they disqualified?? The second AI image generation touches pokemon card illustration, my family and I are boycotting Pokémon cards.
I know 😔 I hope they crack down on it or they will be in some serious trouble. I think people will just only want the cards from real artists.
@@PokeFangOfficial yeah, it would be unwise for them to print AI art on Pokemon cards, no matter that the context or reason is. Great video explaining the situation. I'm not on X/Twitter, and I've cut social media from my routine and uninstalled the apps from my phone, so I'm not really informed on these things lately. The video helps to inform people like like me, so thank you!

Pokemon tcg final did something about it 2 or 3 days ago now. Its disappointing that large company with an equally large franchise took as long as they did to straighten this mess out, even more disappointing that they allowed it to happen in the first place.
Hopefully we won't see a repeat of this in other medias and so on.
I posted an update video on their response! Thank goodness they did the right thing.

@@Sailor-Khione they banned the individual in question who made multiple accounts to circumvent the rules. Hopefully next time the use of AI will also be against the rules.
Wow, that's so crazy. As someone with an untrained eye those looked ok to me at first glance, but after you pointed out things like the water bubbles in the air or the latex looking wet Pikachu, there's no doubt these are AI generated. I agree that they should have to upload their working files with layer history for contests like this. I just hope this person doesn't end up winning with any of these 😬

You’re correct. I realized how it sounded when I was editing the. I more so meant that it was the same exact style across the different artworks that were from what was supposed to be ‘different artists’. That’s my bad.

Those Luvdisc and the Vaporeon are definitely a giveaway in the first image, and the tiny Vaporeon in the other one too. Thanks for pointing these things out, I'll definitely be keeping an eye out for these from now on.

Ai overall has caused so much damage to the art community I’m considering giving up on art but it’s really difficult to stop dreaming.

I tried to enter. None of my entries went through. They need to find ways to prevent AI images to get through.
So they finally did something about the person who took slots with AI and multiple accounts. The individual has been banned. Took the large multibillion dollar company long enough to do something about this.
@@hikaru9624 when I entered this one art contest, we had to show WIP images along with the final image to show we are not cheating. We need more rules and regulations to stop people using AI from cheating.
@@KaeMcSpadden agreed about the ai needing regulations. Not just for competitions, the us of shouldn't be allowed in my opinion, but by law.
I wouldn't know what the process was as I've never taken part in these competitions. Them wanting to see wips does make sense though.
It is crazy how much untrustworthy people there are. It's almost has to turn into needing to video a design 100% to prove it's authentic
Crazy thing is most digital artists are using Procreate which does export the process Timelapse by default. So they really should have to document the process, it would even make good promotional material for the contest.

There is a straightforward way to solve the problem with AI submission in any art contest. You have to show your painting process on a time-lapse video.
It's really sad that people with no talent took up spaces from actual artists. Even though TPC fixed it, they should've known you need strict quality control for any user generated content these days.

What fun is there in collecting cards if all is AI generated. Would not be worth my money in my eyes. Same with content. They should pick different Pokémon next year. Off course Pikachu and Eevee are easy to generate.
The fact that no one points out how w e i r d sitting Pikachu's feet are is so funny to me cuz that just instantly jumped out to me, it just looks wrong both in terms of proportions and angle, like Pikachu is supposed to be aimed straight at camera, while the overall body is looking to the side and also weirdly... veiny. Aurora Eevee I def find to be the most convincing, everything else is too perfect yet too uncanny and weird, and names are just an instant give away

27:28 You know what's funny (but not funny)? In the past before we had to prove ownership, I would be very hesitant to submit the source file of my artwork because I don't know if that other party would reuse parts of that file to make a new image. Now, even if submitting a source file shows "yes, I made this artwork with my own skills", it doesn't reduce the risk of having that source file being used for other things. Legitimate artists are getting the shit end of the stick either way. Damned if you do, damned if you don't.

I love AI Art. The standard style of it might be my favorite art style. Doing this is scammy though. They are using it to cheat, while lying about their entries.
AI Art is not human made. It's why legally the company behind the program cannot force you to pay to sell it. It is public domain, with no human author.
Problem is trademark, copyright, etc. Eevee is The Pokemon Company. If I draw an Eevee, I own the piece, but they own the content. Neither can legally make money without the other's permission. With AI, no one owns the artwork. So all Pokemon only AI Art are ONLY owned by The Pokemon Company.
I'm actually in a rabbit hole rn about learning the pokemon art style. I'm trying to learn how to do decent character art for my own -mon series. I love AI Art, but it's worse than useless for this. Even if I got it to make my concept, THAT design now has no human author, and is public domain.
I love AI Art as a way for nonartists to have access to free art. I also love it as a learning tool for making better art. More and more I'm realizing it's being used to scam, and I don't like that.
I hope false marketing laws can hit AI Art. Love the freedom, but when you say you made something and you didn't, that is a lie. And it becomes unethical when you try to take someone else's money with that lie. (I think lying is unethical, but that's a religious thing, not a global thing) Be honest with your use of art, be it yours or public domain.

Hate to tell you guys the ai art looks good. As someone who almost considered art as a major I get it but bottom line is it looks good. We have “artists” who duct taped a banana to a wall and sold it for like half a mil.
So with all due respect we have trash art or impressionist art that someone flung paint against paper called it good and sold it for millions

I think they look great. Yes Ai makes art easy and no effort but it looks like it’s the next step. First they were hand drawn then computer drawn now Ai generated
To be clear, if you read the contest rules, it doesnt forbid AI.
When I searched keywords like AI, artificial intelligence, etc nothing populated.
The only rule that comes close is you have to name the digital program you used. So potentially its permissible as long as you name it.
Its 2024, A.i. art is art.
I'm sure pecil artists felt the same way about digital art when it first came out.
Also so much ai integration into digital art software now, kinda blury where you draw the line.
Some a.i. art generation software has publicly stated the art you generate is yours as well, so no real legal issue there either.
The only contest rule potentially broken is the limit of 3 entries per person, excess can result in disqualification. But it hasn't been confirmed yet that its one person using aliases, just speculated upon, could be a crazy coincidence until official confirmation.
Community is kind of sensationalizing fake outrage imo, people claiming its not fair, I dont really see how, everyone could access and utilize ai if they wanted to compete.
If the competition was strictly drawn, i'd understand, but from my point of view it looks like an ai art contest.
I fail to see the moral dilemma, I've read speculation that ai just rips off images from the internet. Not a precisely accurate statement, imagine you as a human look at four pictures of charmander then draw a charmander, you didnt rip off the charmander pictures, you just taught ourself how to draw it. Thats what machine learning is.
Please stop making excuses for grifters, scammers and cheats. These image generators can be useful tools and that's a discussion to have another day, but at the end of the day there's a possibility that this person used it to cheat in a competition, and that's not a good look for the technology regardless of whether you support or oppose it. I think it's important for the Pokemon Company to at least look into this situation.

The Art submission rules also states: ⅲ.If a Submission contains materials belonging to a third party that has provided Entrant with permission to use such materials in the Submission, Entrant must provide written copies of such permission on request by the Sponsors and ensure that the permission allows Sponsors to use the materials in full for any purpose as stated in section 8 below.
Seeing As the work AI makes can be considdered 3rd party and not made by the one who submitted it than the program that made the AI images must give permission. however since AI (currently) does not have intulectual property attached to it you can't get permission nor claim it's your work.
It's like finding shells on a beach, you may sift for days to find the nicest shell you can get but you never made nor designed that shell.
while others have made their shells using their craft.
The main concern is that the majority of art used to train the machine learning engine that generates text to image results have been used without the artists permission. In the early days it would pull images from absolutely anywhere as a reference and would often include watermarks and signatures of the original artist who did not consent to train the ai, in the final Ai generated imagery.
It gets worse when you consider that now almost every platform that allows for the sharing of imagery, or even creation of imagery (photoshop) have updated their terms to state that they can use any images you create to train their Ai, and use them wherever they want. Basically the second you share an image online, you are opening it up to train an Ai whether you agree to it or not and you get nothing in return while billionaires make all the money.
Then there’s the aspect of undermining the illustration contest. It’s in the name… illustration, what’s been submitted is not illustrated, it’s generated. You can’t win a marathon by bringing a photoshopped image of you crossing the finish line. The runners (or illustrators) can win, but someone who faked the run, cannot. It’s that simple.
Btw, I mentioned in the video that this person may be operating within the guidelines, but even then the Same art style across 4 alias’s is pretty damning.
check the vaporeon in the background of the 3:22 image, then compare to LaPumpkINK's mermay vaporeon piece and tell me thats 'learning to draw'. tell me that's 'inspiration'.
its okay to have no talent. its okay to not want to develop a talent. but to then enter a competition that involves talent, using a tool that blatantly and explicitly steals art, and then pretend that it's exactly the same as having the talent? you people are pathetic
@@hydrogen-8 I mean to do Ai art effectively you would need to compensate for short falls like possible plagiarism. Also the vaporeon may have been straight up photoshopped in on top of a separate AI generated image. No real proof of how they were done exactly. To some degree all pokemon art is replicating a copyright protected image/ monster. It's difficult to say how different a pose has to be or slight alterations have to exist to not constitute plagiarism in art... There was an artist taking pictures of people off instagram not too long ago and was slightly altering them and that was a fiasco.
A.i. art done skillfully is actually exceptionally difficult if youre trying to create something precisely in your minds eye with extensive written prompts going well over 100k words.
Also i'm not an A.i. artist and I prefer hand drawn art. And I don't like being insulted, so please refrain from calling me pathetic or other insults. I recognize you as a human and will give you that common respect.
I'm sure hand drawn artist felt the same way when photoshop and digital art rolled out, its just another art tool that people are having a difficult time adjusting to.
There is so much AI assist in digital art programs as is, there line and where you draw it, is pretty murky now any way.
