    I'm really liking the backgrounds - well done. BTW - the IBM reader - I used them back in the day (1991-1994, Providence, RI, USA), it was a part of the IBM 4700 Finance Communication System. It wasn't for cards, it was for passbook savings books. The books had a magnetic strip (about twice as high as the credit cards) and it would record account number, balance, etc on it. When a customer would want to deposit/withdrawal money, swipe the book, open the book and print transaction inside, close book, and swipe again to update the info on the strip. This is why there was a springloaded plate to keep the book to the read/write head. Worked well.

      Richard Thompson My local Building Society (essentially a mutual, member-owned bank) here in the UK still issues such passbooks and has read/write devices similar to the one in the video at its counters.

    Great to see a youngster so enthusiastic. When I was Sagan's age, my dad, returning from business trips, would bring me gifts of electrical kits, magnets, motors, tools and other wondrous things. I can see the same joy as I used to feel when there was some new kit to open up. Skills I learned in those days still serve me well today. I was extremely lucky to have parents who took the time to expose me to all those things. You're a great dad. Keep it up!

    Dave, I have one of those weather stations. The wind direction, speed and rainfall "sensors" are basic sensors that use a mix of reed switches and resistors (wind direction) , and reed switches for wind speed and rainfall, all tripped by small magnets. The unit you have there then wirelessly sends data to a small (A5 size) base station which displays the data, and allows PC software via USB to download stored data. Some versions also included the functionality of syncing with "atomic" clock signals to time code the data accurately. - Hope that helps

    • @johnnodge4327
      @johnnodge4327 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have the same weather station under marketed under the Waston name product No is 8681. In the UK it was also sold by the now defunct Maplin electronics store chain, under there own brand name and coloured grey instead of the off white.
      The sensors being mainly reed switches are easy to repair, and do have a long life. Mine has been giving weather data for over a decade, which is pretty good going for what is effectively a cheap consumer grade weather station.

    • @MalcolmCrabbe
      @MalcolmCrabbe 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@johnnodge4327 John, I got mine from Maplin, and I believe Fine Offset is another branding. I had to replace the original sender unit purchased in 2008 after four years as it gave out faulty temp and humidity values. The replacement has been running fine for the 8 years since, which is not bad for a domestic bit of kit costing around £60 for the complete kit. Still running Cumulus ver 1.9.4 - does the job well. The only issue is spiders in the rain gauge !!

    • @johnnodge4327
      @johnnodge4327 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MalcolmCrabbe
      Mine has also stopped giving humidity data, but the temperature sensor is accurate to 1°C, which isn't bad. My base station LCD touch sensor started playing up, so I disconnected that. The touch sensor isn't needed as the settings can be controlled by EasyWeather, which came in the weather station. I have Cumulus but used Easyweather as I only connect the station to the PC occasionally to download the stored data.
      I have also had to replace the anemometer twice, once it lost a cup in a gust exceeding 99Mph!!, and a second one had a bearing seize. I've replaced a few reed switches in both the direction and anemometer too.
      Otherwise it's just an occasional spider to remove from the rain gauge, and an annual battery replacement in the transmitter. I also use petroleum jelly on all the connections and battery terminals, which I'm sure has helped keep it working reliably for the last decade.

    I remember a magazine review of those dry etch transfers. It was printed 2 or 3 times with different rasters to prevent light-leaks. Dave I worked for a contracting company who did a bunch of the I.T. stuff for Conyourwealth Bank in the early 00's. I was involved in ripping out the keycorp gear and replacing it with some newer stuff, but before they replaced the computers, they refitted all the branches with new shop fronts designed for them.
    The keycorp keyboards did indeed have the card swipes built in, but the one that a lot of people may not know is that the connection between the keyboard and the computer used a custom interface card and the connection between keyboard and the card was hardware encrypted!
    It got really fun when you were pulling out a number of the workstations to allow them to do the shop refit and putting them back, because the cards and keyboards were paired and if you mixed up the keyboards, it wouldn't work properly with the computer. Each computer was (if I remember correctly) a 386 with something like 4MB of RAM, and booted into windows 3.1.... Then when you started up the banking application that started an OS/2 Warp 4 security kernel inside Windows that then communicated with the keyboard via the card and wouldn't actually load properly if the keyboard and card weren't communicating.
    This meant that in the case you had mixed up the keyboards... it took about ten minutes to load everything up and see whether or not it was the right one. With 10 or more computers in each branch this could turn into quite a process!
    The other part of this that was a lot of fun was that for a while they had the new system and the old systems in place with a KVM under the desk to switch back and forth between them. I got some complaints from the branches about the cables not being tidy enough and head office sent me two 10cm velcro cables ties to tidy up the cables under each desk. I sent them back a picture of the bundle of cables and they sent me 100m reel of doublesided velcro instead!

    @EEVBlog - Dave, HandSpring Visor was actually made by Palm founders who left Palm after 3Com bought it.
    It was pretty good, I had one - the expansion slot supported things like Compact Flash reader, Bluetooth and even early wifi cards. Visors were actually considered better Palms than Palm. Yes, the Handspring Visor was actually a Palm organizer, just rebadged with a slightly different case. Those things were quite awesome back in the day! I remember doing ICQ and e-mail back in 2001 over IrDA with my Nokia 7110 GSM phone as the modem. (The phone with the springy sliding mechanism from the Matrix movie, although not the same phone as in the movie, that one didn't have the springy mechanism, just a normal slider.) I got a whopping 9600bauds, but that was actually enough to chat with one person over ICQ back then! Although it had to be precisely aligned, laying flat on the table and any movement disturbed the connection (which made it so that I used the stylus on the on-screen keyboard instead of writing Graffiti on the writing area of the screen, because that was how you wrote on these devices back then!

I have a big Bluetooth sound system that has a rubbish antenna design with a range of about half a meter. At first I intended to keep the microphones muted and just use it as a WiFi enabled Bluetooth transmitter to stream audio over but as I mentioned before I just kept the mics on and use it for a bunch of stuff now.
