On My Own Elias Näslin
Hi my name is Carl Jacobson,
I started woodworking with my grandfather as a young boy. I continued woodworking through high school, and started woodturning after seeing a turned project in a friends shop. Shortly after TH-cam started, I was looking for a howto video for duck calls, with no results I decided to make my own video. Some of my fondest memories are working with my grandfather in his wood shop. Being able to share our passion for woodworking, ties it all together. We do a lot of epoxy projects as well as woodturning. - แนวปฏิบัติและการใช้ชีวิต
In this video I turned a sphere case for a magic 8 ball. I decorated it with basket illusion. Basket illusion is a technique of burning and coloring wood.
I put together a list of some of the tools I use in my shop

Who is the jerk that disliked this video? Amazing work, Carl. Your ability to do the tedious is outstanding.
Obviously not a lover of fine workmanship, or not a wood worker.
@@MusicFurler Obviously they have no appreciation for the craft.
Now there is 8 jerks. Player haters obviously.
Thank you very much!! :)
Mesmerizing to watch you turn wood!

Thank you!
Nice piece Carl.
Thank you Jim!
Wonderfully mesmerizing! Amazing! So awesome!
Thank you very much Scott!
Hi Carl. Great job. You make it look so Easy Wood Turning, I want to take up the hobby. lol.
I hope Craig gets to watch. I still think you could make a platform for burning to get you around to the other side that might cut some time out for you on some turnings.
Thank you buddy!! The platform does go around the other side, but the chuck gets in the way with a small tenon.
looks like it is so Cathartic to turn.
Cool. I like it.
Thank you!
You have an amazing creative skill. Just amazing.
Thank you very much Tony!
Thank you for keeping the section where you were cleaning up the number pad in teal-time... it’s better for seeing what you’re actually doing. For the most part the fast forward is fine, but that one bit of real-time video was a nice mix!
Thank you Jared!
Awesome! Love those Easy Wood Tools!
Right?! Thanks Lewis!
Great project, different. End results is really nice.
Thank you Bob!
good job it looks great
Thank you!!
What a cool idea. Man that turned out great. My hand goes numb when I'm working on tedious stuff like that so kudos to you and Robin for doing it. I couldn't believe you had thumbs down until I realized they're likely a joke. Great job again my friend.
Thank you buddy! My hands went numb after about 2 rows.
Super cool.. can’t wait to do some burning on a project!!
Thanks buddy!!
Ha, i love it!
Thank you! Home Depot right? :)
I really love the basket illusion, it looks great. Hats off to you both for the patience as I'm sure it took ages!
Thank you very much brother!!
Amazing, looks like hundreds of little pieces of wood glued together.
Thank you very much Philip!
Another beauty Carl!👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Thank you Alan!!
I'm definitely gonna get some of those pens next time I go to America. The whole thing looks great. So much work. I'm gonna go look for my patience now. 😂
lol Thank you Henrik!
Once again, superb!
Thank you so much Thomas!
Awesome Carl great job, much patience needed. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you Gary!!
I think that is one of the best looking, unusual wood turning pieces I have ever seen. The math you must have used to figure out the spacing would drive me crazy. Bravo, very well done!
Thank you so much! I have an indexing system on my lathe, which makes it easy. No math involved :) The coloring is the tough part.
Awesome
Thank you!
Hey Carl, I wouldn't believe to much in the predicting accuracy of the magic 8-ball. I love how it looks like a native american woven basket.
lol I'm not betting the farm on it ;) Thank you!!
Hey Carl......The dust collector looks like a robot's broken arm......Just makes it that much cooler if it works!!
lol It works great!!
Muito bom! Parabéns, teu talento é impressionante
Muito obrigado Vagner!

I've been telling my office staff that I was going to get a Magic 8 Ball for my desk to answer stupid questions and then you did this video! It looks fantastic!
lol To funny!! Thank you Shannon!!
What an amazing build and turn. It sure took a lot of patience!!
SAFE TURNING, John
Thank you John!!
Very cool Carl
Enjoyed and gave a Thumbs Up
Thank you buddy!!
@@CarlJacobson You're welcome
I finally subbed because the 8 ball said I would.
LOL Well Thank you very much!
Same here. I felt kind of obligated to subscribe, sort of a "self fulfilling prophecy". I've watched so much of this channel already it seemed disingenuous not to have subscribed by now anyway. :)
The ball is beautiful, your patience paid off! Not a fan of the toy, but your skills are inspirational!
Thank you very much!
Great job Carl, love the way you mounted the mechanism
Cheers
Jim
Thank you mate!

As always, great video Carl. We used to play with the 8Ball a lot when we were kids, brings back memories. Also nice shirt at the being of the video👍👍.
Thank you buddy! The Magic 8 Ball told me to wear the shirt...lol
@@CarlJacobson Ha!!!
Nice work Carl, and as usual Robin makes things look great
hahaha Thank you buddy!
Looks awesome Carl! 😍🎱 Great job! 👍🏻👊🏻
Thank you buddy!
I was really tempted to hit thumbs down as a joke per your eight ball at the beginning, BUT WOW! I love watching what you do. Mesmerizing and inspiring! Thank you for sharing!
:) Thank you so much Gary!!
After the wedge fiasco last week I had a closer look at the burn marks and there not so even . I guess it's a so so project 👅 lol . Awesome job buddy take care .
lol
LMAO I'll try harder next time! ;) Thank you buddy!!
muy bueno, saludos
¡Gracias!
That looks awesome Carl! and Robin did a great job coloring in the pattern, we seen you do a couple but we know the truth, lol. Awesome video!!
LOL
hahaha Thank you buddy!
Thank you for another teaching video! If I could have anything, I’d love to have your setup. I wish I knew how anyone can afford the finer things. I hope you have a great day. I wish also I could have my own channel turning wood. I have a crap lathe but sometimes I can make something but I get tired of only using glue blocks all the time, lmao. Anyways, I really hope you’re having a great day. Thank you again for such a great video.
That's how I started 25 years ago. It definitely takes time! Thank you :)
🤯❤
Great work!! Really cool design =)
Thank you very much!
yes! Yes! Yes! Love that! Where the heck do you get your ideas from??
It's all Robin! lol Thank you brother!!
Patience? I can learn patience. How long is that gonna take?
Seriously though that of just beautiful. No way my skill level will ever be that high, but still inspirational.
Hahaha....Thank you Tim! It just takes time I've been turning for 25 years.
I has other skills! 🙃
You did a beautiful job. Three hours for just the. Lack seems pretty amazing. Get yourself a lamp with a magnifying glass attached. Trust and believe it will save your eyesight.
Thank you! I have one attached to the lathe, and it works great!!
I tried to do the playing card trick on the bottom of one of my bowls... and it didn't work.... the groove might not have been deep enough/wide enough.... I'll differently try it again though! but if you have any other tips I would really appreciate it! because the bottom of my bowls are kinda boring.....
Adrian Bryant it’s also gotta be spinning pretty fast to generate enough heat.
I have the lathe at around 2,500 RPMs When you get to the center of of the bowl it's spinning a lot slower. Try turning it up as fast as your lathe will go.
That thing lies!! I hit the like button =D Awesome idea, and it turned out so cool. Love that basket illusion effect
Right?! It said there would only be 1 dislike lol Thank you buddy!!
Hi Carl, As I don't have a Magic 8 Ball I have to go by what I saw. So without any doubt gave a👍 . Cheers, Huw
Thank you Huw :)
wow that's amazing! did you put any finish on it or would that make the colour ink run?
Thank you June! I didn't put a finish on, but you can the colors won't run.
I just love this! You guys come up with the best ideas. I hear magic 8 balls are bad luck, you could just mail it to me. 😉
❤️🇨🇦❤️
hahaha Thank you so much Susan!!
Great job! I love the basket weave illusion and would like to try doing it some day. I have a beading tool from D-Way. Can you tell me what type of tip you used in the pyrography pen? Is it curved to fit the profile of the bead? Thanks. Jean
Thank you Jean!! The tip is flat and curved, like a round nose scraper. I have seen ones that are the profile of the beads that would work just as well.
To cut off with a saw put the lathe in reverse and kerp saw in same place the moving wood acts like your pulling the saw and you get a clean cut
Yes I've done that before, but thank you!
Excuse me, the wire with the handles to make the black trace burning the wood, did you do it or did you buy it? If yes, tell me where? Thank you very much. Ciao from Italy
I believe" Easy Wood Tools" just came out with them.
Easy Wood Tools makes them. I think you can get them from Amazon UK Here's a link, www.amazon.co.uk/stores/page/954FB9C9-9AC4-4074-9C9A-77C752971A2E?ingress=3
Love this project and pattern. Novice here! Can you point me in the direction of the beading tool, please. Thank you! Love watching you
Thank you so much Melissa! I put the link in the description for the beading tool :)
