A trick to keep your greens longer, transfer to a large zip lock bag, put a couple of paper towels in with the produce. Once the paper towel has absorbed the liquid, replace with dry towel. My veggies are lasting 2-3 weeks now.

@@saraareed5477 Yes, like Tupperware boxes, although mine are cheaper. I also sometimes buy salad greens in plastic boxes and they can be washed and reused several times, although they are more flimsy than reusable boxes. I do use a paper towel on the top and bottom because I only go to a store once a week or less and I need the greens to last awhile. I dry and reuse the paper towels for floor spills or to wipe residual oil from pans before washing them.

Even through these times of inflation it is possible to stay on budget. I read all the stores flyers (digitally) and make a mealplan according to what is on sale. If I find good deals in the reduced section, I buy it, and put it in the freezer for later, or change my mealplan for the week. Some weeks I have to shop at 3 different stores, but they are all relatively close, and on my way home from work, so I don´t spend any extra gas on the grocery shopping.

When I started working once my kids were in school, I numbered a paper 1-31 and got the fam to tell me meals they enjoyed. Once I got meals plugged in on the list, I shopped for 7 days at a time. I could switch meals within the week if I wanted. This method worked great for me.

  • @Tokixkitti

cutting the junk food = to healthy eating habits. A bag of chips in NYC is $6 now and even "on sale" cookies are like the regular price back before inflation went crazy!
Since prices of snacks has gone up, I've either learned to make my own snacks or stopped snacking all together.
Great tips in general. I also tend to have a lot of food waste since I sometimes shop at the grocery store hungry and then forget what I purchased a few days later. I think a good tip which I've implemented is to have a list of food that is in the fridge by my desk so when it comes time to preparing lunch/dinner I know what I have and I can use up those ingredients.

It's not just looking for a cheaper store. Where you buy things in the store affects prices. For example, in the store where I work, store brands are kept on a certain aisle or in the fridge. Every single item from yeast to oatmeal to spices to rice is significantly cheaper and usually the same brand as what's on the other ailes, just under the store brand name. Instead of liquid egg whites, buy the egg white protein powder. It's shelf stable and significantly cheaper. Matcha powder in the vitamins section is better quality and exponentially cheaper than on the tea aisle. Same with cocoa and cacao and beet powder and several other items. Always shop the markdowns first. Don't be afraid of expiration dates. You can freeze milk, cheese, cream cheese, sour cream, and that meat and bread with an expiration of today. Ask employees about coupons, in store specials, and tips and tricks they know for better prices too.

Not plant based but Jamerrill gave a tip to use lentils to supplement ground beef depending on your dish to make it stretch further. I haven't tried it yet but if kids/people really can't tell, it's gonna be better (and less expensive) than using more meat!

    • @juliea6095

Beans and tofu are staples for us. Chili, stir fry, wings, tacos, scramble breakfast... so many possibilities and so cheap to make. Lentils are also a great option. I made lentil meatballs last night and my husband ate most of them before we even sat down to dinner lol.

    • @Erin-rg3dw
      @Erin-rg3dw ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@zz-ic6vy I definitely recommend it anywhere you use ground meat - tacos, spaghetti, chili, etc. Cook up some lentils or black beans and cook them with the meat so they get a bit more broken up and absorb some of the flavor. You can cut the meat easily in half and still get the flavor. Vegan grounds are also frequently cheaper than real beef and take flavor really well so you can substitute them for meat on occasion.
For tofu, it marinates nicely and will take on pretty much any flavor you want. Try it in a stir fry. Just make sure to press and drain it before you cut and marinate.

I took my husband to the hospital for a knee replacement and on the way this morning, gas at Safeway was 5:19, on the way home at 5:00 it was 5:29. I am definitely cutting back on the easy snack foods, and making from scratch cookies, opting for popcorn instead of chips and if I'm going to spend money on snacks, it will have to be nutrient rich foods like fruit and veggies. I also am growing more food. Now more than ever, it is actually cheaper to grow food than buy it.

Two of my favorite people on TH-cam! Christine is so right about waste. I cut down on waste as much as possible, because like Christine said it's like throwing money away. I go through my refrigerator and preserve anything that I don't think I'm going to use. For example, with spinach if we have spinach salad but don't use it all, I cook the rest and freeze it. If there's only a small amount I steam it or saute it. if I have a larger quantity I make creamed spinach. For me the key is to do that right away instead of thinking I'll probably use it later. I do this with most fruits and vegetables.

When meal planning always check your fridge First to see what HAS to be eaten before it goes to waste. Then go to your pantry and check your fruit and veggies and bread situation on the stuff that goes bad. Make as many meals as you can with that stuff. Then wipe out your fridge because hopefully then you "ate" out your fridge enough to clean it every week.

We bought some at a Kroger case sale for 30 cents less than Walmart. I was going to can but we also saved on pressure canning lids. We got a Nutrimill and breadmaker and grind wheat berries and make pizza dough. We cook brown rice in the instapot with bouillon and freeze in meal sized portions, it rejeats fast! Brown two pans of hamburger at once put taco seasoning in one, freeze the extra. Cook the proteins in advance! I used to boil eggs as we unloaded the groceries. I then had hard boiled eggs ready, a slicer made salad sandwiches fast. Premix tuna and season overnight, tastier on next day sandwiches. Brown beef sausage and make casserole, white beans, tomatoes, green beans...

We honestly go through frozen way better than fresh. I buy fresh produce based on what I KNOW we will consume in a timely manner. I do a lot of frozen veggies because they are actually fresher and of course last as long as you need them to. Family of five, soon to be six in 2022 and we feel the pinch. We just decided to do a Costco style membership in our area so my husband will quit buying food daily at work to help also because that racks up fast!!
ETA: I’m more inclined to save what wasn’t eaten out of meal prepping or dinner now. It’s sometimes not much, but it’s easy to turn into soups or other dishes when we might need it in a pinch also.

I love shopping for groceries on line for pick up! Between menu planning and doing grocery pick up I’m staying in budget!!! So man fewer impulse buys when you stay out of the physical store.

Yesterday I went back to the store because I was sure they made a mistake for charging me 11.99$ for 15 pnds. of potatoes, it was not a misttake!

Easy protein fix--- eats beans, lentils, legumes, peas. They are ready whenever and can help last until groceries are bought.

This is all fantastic advice, but it kinda makes me sad how many people apparently don't already know all this. All of Christine's advice was how I was raised. It never even occurred to me to shop without a meal plan. I know a lot of people are not planners by nature like me so no judgment, but if anything is worth planning for, it's food!

I only buy fresh fruit if it's in season- everything else I just buy frozen and make smoothies! When you buy lemons you can just slice them and freeze them. I replace 2 meals a week with legume substitutes, frozen vegetables. Doing this my grocery costs are actually lower than a year ago!!

Something major I have to tell myself is if I'm not gonna eat it don't buy it! I try and tell myself oh I'll make a meal with mushrooms. I don't even like mushrooms I waste them all the time.

How cool is this. Thanks for having Christine on your show! I watch her channel :). It sort of freaks me out, that the basics, like eggs and bread (and we make our own bread) have sky rocketed in price. Those staple foods that would ride your through the month and keep the grocery bill at bay...is now just no the case. (And having your own chickens is also expensive...as my gals also eat a lot :). And Christine, you made a great point on your channel and on this one about food waste!!!!!I completely agree with you. I had to toss a 1/3 of my strawberries today because we didn't eat them in time, and my other half of my cauliflower went bad...so thats like 5 dollars right there. And thats just in one day. So I will definitely have to revisit my meal planning. I'd like to mention that my big saving grace this year, is that for the first time ever, I have saved a lot of my seeds from last year. I have thus far grown lettuce, spinach, tomatoes starters, etc. So those lettuces/and spinach that go bad every single week that I buy on repeat has decreased.

I never liked to spend money on junk food. About a year ago I bought a food saver so now I buy family packs of meat at Sam’s or Cosco and vacuum seal in smaller sizes. The meat is cheaper in family packs and vacuum sealing prevents freezer burn. The price of food is skyrocketing, so it is good to buy now and stock up. With fuel prices going through the roof, food prices will continue to rise. Thanks Rachel for having Christine on your show! I really like her channel because it is practical and concise.

I didn’t pay much attention. I only shop for 2, but wow! I switched the basics from Publix to Walmart. Lots of things are a whole $1 cheaper at Walmart or Aldi. I don’t like Walmart, but they’ll RING it to my car. Win win

Instead of ground beef I buy ground pork and put it in tacos or spaghetti. It comes in 2.5 lbs for 6.48 at winco. I also use it to make ground sausage just add a few spices. Price per pound is still less than beef. I have 2 teenage boys so they eat a lot!!😄. This is the time to cut back and I'm very aware now of food waste and try not to waste anything!
