For those who wonders what really happens: The game saves your name . This name has its own place in the game memory and stays there. The only time it is moved is when you have the old man catch a Pokémon for you. That's because it's the old man's name that appears in the battle screens, not yours. Internally, the memory then stores the name "Old Man" in the place where your player name was stored until then. So currently, when you go to the island, the trainer name is still in the field that tells you which Pokémon to hit. Normally, this information would be overwritten as soon as you enter a route with tall grass. Then the field is used to store the corresponding Pokémon. Before we get all the information together so far, it takes one last foray into the technology of the code for an explanation of what exactly MissingNo is in the first place. MissingNo stands for Missing Number. The fact that it exists is because all 151 Pokémon are recorded in a memory location. However, these memory locations - always powers of 2 - can have lots of space, so 1, 2, 4, 16, 128, 256 locations, and so on. The smallest unit to store 151 Pokémon has 256 spaces and therefore 105 too many. Now, an error or something like that can cause these unused spaces to be accessed - which is exactly what we're trying to do with the glitch. So that the code can give an answer here, there is MissingNo. It is simply a placeholder for the emergency. Exactly this emergency occurs on Vermilion Island. However, not always and immediately. As mentioned before, the info for new sections is overwritten as soon as you enter a new route. That happens here too, but we're on a water route. Water, as you know, doesn't have tall grass, so there's no wild Pokémon info stored for tall grass. So there is still the name of the trainer there. This name now comes together with an error in the code: The coastal section at Vermilion Island is defined as tall grass, not water. Therefore, the game accesses the last data stored in memory to find out which Pokémon should appear here. In our case: the trainer name. The letters of this name determine which Pokémon at which level you will now encounter. With certain combinations, this leads to MissingNo appearing because a number is being searched for that does not exist in the memory. More specifically, the familiar l-shaped MissingNo will appear if the third, fifth, or seventh position of the trainer's name contains either one of the letters G, H, J, M, S, T, :, ], a, b, c, m, o, p, or v, or the end mark. The latter is placed in the field after the name to indicate its end. Other letters in said places lead to other Pokémon, so MissingNo. need not appear. And whoever's trainer name doesn't fall into these defaults is out of luck, unfortunately. And why does this maximize the item count? The game stores two bits for each Pokémon, one for "Seen" and one for "Captured". If they are set to 0, it means no, 1 means yes, so you have seen or caught it. Since MissingNo is an unintentional exception, the bits for it are stored in other places. Namely at the place where the number of the item is stored at the sixth place in the bag. If you see MissingNo, a 1 is set here at the sixth place of the binary represented number. Therefore this is increased by 128. This also explains why the 99x for the specific item doesn't look right, because the game is actually trying to represent a number that can't be represented with two digits. And that's the whole secret of MissingNo, where exactly it comes from and why you can hit it at all.
@@frazlaz You find it in my answer already "And why does this maximize the item count? The game stores two bits for each Pokémon, one for "Seen" and one for "Captured". What makes missingno encounter scary is that long gap between the encounter and the start of the battle compared to normal encounter. This long loading time is due to the decompression of the MissingNo sprite. The data in MissingNo's two sprites is somehow corrupted and far exceeds the normal size of a sprite. This causes a longer loading time but it is also what causes the corruption of the Pokemon League data because this data is located immediately after the space used to decompress the sprite and the MissingNo sprite data overflows into the pokemon league data space.

It would be cool if they actually implement Missingno as an actual pokemon, and have him appear in this form. He would be a pokemon that's literally a sentient fragment of broken reality, who was sealed away by Arceus for trying to destroy reality as we know it.
That's a really interesting idea, maybe it could be part of quest to get it to the devs at the end of the game and have them fix it or something before it destroys everything or something
@@GoldenGamerFox7272fromYT Wouldn't it be great if we could somehow "lock" a Pokemon from gaining any exp at all when it was at like level 255 so it would stay badass forever?
Fun Fact: Not sure if anyone already knew this, but if you visit the safari zone prior doing the steps in this video, a lot of rare Safari Zone Pokémon will spawn more regularly in the same coast as Missingno. They also spawn in the same level as they normally would in the Safari Zone. This is a very easy way to encounter and catch Scyther, Chansey, Tauros and Kangaskhan. And you can use regular pokeballs too.
When I was a kid, my brother and I thought that capturing missingno would corrupt the save data from the gameboy. Missingno was some kind of a supernatural thing to us, pretty much a millennial urban legend lol.
@@luigi7834 there are actually 4 save files on the gameboy. Only one (or none) can be loaded at the same time (think of it like a disk drive with 4 disks). One holds HOF data, one the "main savefile" the other two 6 pc boxes each. The game always has the HOF one loaded, unless you just loaded in and have not seen a Pokémon sprite (so before you do any shenanigans, take a look at a non-glitch pokemon). Even if you manage to get the game stuck in a loop that overwrites the entire save with garbage (some other glitch pokemon do indeed cause this), you only ruin the HOF. There are ways to corrupt a save file, but most of them include corrupting the game to some state that cannot be loaded - then save.
Some versions of missingno use the cries of actual pokemon. However, most use the games equivalent of a blank cry- a nidoran♂️ (cry 0 in the data, the values ranging from 0 to 255) with a pitch of 0 and reverb of 0. Its form is usually dependent on the player's set name, more specifically certain letters, and with the right combinations you can find some real oddities, like the 3 versions that essentially duplicate the movement, stats and back sprite of the previous pokemon sent out in battle and the front sprites using those of the lavender tower ghosts when encountered without the silph scope and the two fossils found in the museum.
Just for reference, the glitch that causes missingno has to do with the way the game references random pokemon in areas of the game. Every area has data linked to it that contains the pokemon that appear. If it cannot find that data, then it will use the data from the last area that you encountered a pokemon. This is where the old man comes in. In order to set his name to old man, the game hasto temporarily store your player name. It stores it in the place that holds the last area, causing glitch
I saved afterwards and I was fine. Just don't catch or even battle it. All I did was trigger the actual battle to get tons of master balls and rare candies and then ran away.
There is absolutely no problem in catching the missingnos. Whenever your sprites are glitchy, use Missigno to fight against a wild Ditto. When your MissingNo has no visible attacks when you watched its stats earlier (which can happen), you should not try to see them in fight. So if that's the case, swap to MissingNo (or use item when it's your first Pokemon) in order to make Ditto transform into Missingno. Then just swap to another Pokemon and beat Ditto (not this easy if you haven't level enough, cause Ditto can use the hidden attacks - if they are hidden for you). After that fight all sprites (except hall of fame) are set to normal again. Until you resee the stats of MissingNo. I think the hall of fame stats should be reset when you beat it again. Hint: Also you can make 3 of the 4 attacks visible by giving MissingNo a TM. It will forget the first attack without even asking :(
I actually had a job to repair someone's PC a week ago, and they had a ten year old son that was playing Pokemon Blue and knew everything about catching Missingno and bypassing the Bike Road without a bike! Never thought newer generations would still be interested in this thing. (Lol, and here is 29 year old me commenting on something I used to do when I was 10 myself) Just why in the heck do we love to hack the crap out of this gameboy game?
The amount of people that don't know the story behind the MissingNo is astonishing...I've played pokemon since the beginning, missingno was the "trick" used to max out pokemon and rare candy / master balls. This was around '97/98. MissingNo was a pokemon that was pulled from the game late in the production. They didn't remove all the code from the game due to the short time, just some major aspects. That's why you can duplicate items, the code of the game is buggy. Theoretically speaking, you can face MissingNo, defeat him and duplicate all the items you want, there shouldn't be any issues. The probability of a corrupted save is minimal, like 0,0115%. But if you catch MissingNo, i won't say it's a 50/50 chance of getting corrupted but it's pretty close. You can catch it but release it immediately!! And even then, the probability of corruption is high. As for experience, when i duped items, 1/50 or 1/100 games got corrupted and i'm not 100% sure it was because of the trick. When i caught missingno,5 or 6 out of 10 got corrupted and a couple more got corrupted as i advanced in the story line. All that said, the original pokemon MissingNo was the Kangaskhan cub that eventually evolved to a Kangaskhan. Try giving MissingNo a couple of rare candy. Either missingno or 'M will evolve to Kangaskhan. This is very very VERY old information, how do kids today don't know this?
Yeah Missingno was supposedly a alternative evolution to Cubone that would evolve into Kangaskhan . Though that part might not be true. But if you look at the cub in Kangaskhan, you do see a resemblance to Cubone.
I remember doing this back in the days lol, me and my friends were scared that our gameboys would break xD. To this very day, I still got my green gameboy, and my pokemon red casset..
I used to do this glitch in gen one, I have no idea how I discovered it because it was way before TH-cam tutorials on the net. Was the best for item duplicates. Good vid blast from the past. I’m deep into arceus now very different times
4:44 Considering how corrupt Missingno is, In this that Rattata didn't just fainted, every atom of it's body and spirit got obliterated, then it was erased from existence
Fun fact: you can teach MissingNo fly and bird type attacks on Gameboy, but once uploaded to Pokémon Stadium he appears as a Kangaskhan that can utilize bird type attacks. 😂
@@OwlyFisher That didn't happen because it was a glitch Pokemon, that happened because the level overflowed. Max level is always 100. So if you find a Pokemon over that level and it gains any experience at all, it immediately goes down to 100.
Without getting too technical the missingno glitch is dependant on the hex values of your name thats why one person gets a lv 255 tauros and another gets a lv 2 pidgey, also if you picked one one of the preset names it also changes the result.

@@sans-_-7880 I'm sorry about replying to your comment after 1 year, but in order to multiply your items via encountering MissingNo, you need to select the item you want and place it in 6th place (from the upper perspective).

It corrupts that cartridge's hall of fame data, that's it

Missingno is so powerful its water gun obliterated a level 3 Ratata into pieces.
So the game is technically trying to encounter your character but it can’t find any battle data so it sends out missingno?
I love how most of the comments are about lavender town
Hey, did you know that Lavender Town?

Ah yes, the famous *B I R D T Y P E* pokémon

Well I'd just shit my pants.
This video is 12 years old this channel is a legend
This is very very VERY old information, how do kids today don't know this?
shadowownzz that's cool!
No its just a glitch thats caused by
extra space in the pokedex
Yeah Missingno was supposedly a alternative evolution to Cubone that would evolve into Kangaskhan . Though that part might not be true. But if you look at the cub in Kangaskhan, you do see a resemblance to Cubone.
Missingno doesn't evolve, only 'M does
Missingno is a glitch not a cut pokemon

I always wanted MissingNo to actually appear as an actual Pokémon in a game. Like, a minor Pokémon that only appears once as an easter egg.
Without getting too technical the missingno glitch is dependant on the hex values of your name thats why one person gets a lv 255 tauros and another gets a lv 2 pidgey, also if you picked one one of the preset names it also changes the result.

I can't remember for sure, but I may have done this myself at some point.
A few things I learned from testing out Missingno myself.
-It CANT corrupt your data, that is a myth. It just messes with your hall of fame data
-It doesn't really duplicate the 6th item in your inventory. It just changes the number, but you still have the same amount.
-If it is over level 100 and it gains xp, it levels down to Level 100.
Have you tried leveling a missingno over 100 with rare candies until it's level 1 and then battling with it until it evolves?
Don't do that if you value your red or blue version cartridge. It not only corrupts your save file but it distorts any new games you try to make on it.
