    And just t add one a little closer to home, the British government operated "Radio Atlántico del Sur" using the BBC Ascension Island relay on a couple of frequencies in the 31m band directed at Argentinian forces during the Falklands War of 1982.

    I've had more success receiving jamming of clandestine stations - the Chinese love to jam Sound of Hope, and I've received what I believe is Ethiopian jamming of the Voice of the Tigray Revolution.
    There were also reports of FM clandestine stations in Myanmar after the recent coup.

    • @fiftyfuckingfeet
      @fiftyfuckingfeet 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I live in the Philippines and Sound Of Hope is super easy to hear because they transmit on a ridiculous number of frequencies in order to try to dodge the jamming. It also results in the CNR feed being all over the place too because of the cat and mouse game they're playing with each other. The propaganda stations from the mainland aimed at Taiwan are never jammed on shortwave or mw, very easy to pick up the shortwave at any time or the mw at night. They run the old firedrake jammer on mw directed at some Taiwan stations though. Besides that the North/South Korea radio war still continues on but it's harder to hear their stations directed at each other because of the jamming and the fact they like to use lower frequencies that are more prone to interference here.

    Another great radio topic, indeed. Thanks for sharing!
    If you ever do a follow up, please include "Deutscher Freiheitssender 904" and "Deutscher Soldatensender 935", clandestine medium wave stations broadcasting from east Germany (same transmitter) but claiming to be pirates from the west.
    RFE/R. Liberty is having a bit of a renaissance these days... not clandestine anymore, though.

    Nicely done! Due to ongoing Ukranian Russian conflict the bottom of the 40 meter band and some parts of the 80 meter band become a total chaos with pirate radio stations from both sides. Few of them using really strong language in Russian and Ukrainian languages... If repection fine most of them can receive in the UK as well

    Radio Liberty/Radio Free Europe has been operating since WW2. It still does and it's been in overdrive since the current invasion of Ukraine began. RL/RFE have an active TH-cam channel - also very busy presently. These stations are indeed funded by the US government and have always been operated by the CIA. Take a look/a listen to see how your own 'side' does propaganda..

    My abuelo worked on the AMTRUNK clandestine radio operation carried out by the CIA whose goal was to encourage Cuban Democratic Socialists and Moderates to turn against Castro, he was a democratic socialist who wasn't happy with the provocative and homophobic actions and policies of Castro, although he had initially supported him during the removal of Batista.

      Juicy quote
      "He believes that he is receiving special attention because of his (Washington, DC) connections, and he will not hesitate to go behind (CIA's) back to AMTRUNK-1/George Volsky, AMCAPE-1/Tad Szulc and ODACID/State Dept. or higher authority/JFK...it is the recommendation of the JMWAVE station that this operation be terminated at the earliest possible moment..."
      "Moreno was born on 25 August 1921 in Havana, Cuba. His father was a Cuban Senator (1940-44) and the Minister of Public Works (1944)...In Miami after defection, he was associated with JURE. He was assessed in 1963 as being unfriendly to CIA. In February 1963 Moreno and Enrique Cayado Ribera (AMTRUNK-2) reportedly collaborated in the formulation of an operational plan to overthrow the Castro government. They discussed it with Jorge Volsky (AMTRUNK-1), who passed it to Tad Szulc (AMCAPE-1). Volsky and Szulc apparently conspired to have the plan passed to the 'political authorities' (Robert Hurwitch and the Kennedy Administration) in Washington in order to bypass the distrusted 'operational authorities' (the CIA)."

    While a lot of what clandestine radio stations had been doing had moved to social media, some on-air Battlefielda remain, although not necessarily as structured radio broadcasts. Here in Europe, the most notable example is probably a mix of propaganda and insults ruSSian and Ukrainian "radio amateurs" have been firing against each other every day on 80 & 40m bands. Of course, they continue during this war too.
    There were also some infamous anti-vaxx & anti-Green Pass transmissions from Italy near 40m band last autumn.

    There's a broadcaster funded by the US government called Radio Marti, which is anti-Castro, or since he's dead now, anti-communist. I don't know if it meets the definition of clandestine or not. From what I've monitored over the years, it's not really hardcore firebrand type of programming. It's mostly news, music, and other types of entertainment or special interest. It broadcasts I believe 24 hours a day on shortwave, but they also have a medium wave transmitter in south Florida. I don't think you'd call it clandestine, because their shortwave broadcast is also beamed to Central and South America for an audience there as well, so not always anti-regime in Cuba stuff. Cuba does jam it though, but the jammer leaves a lot to be desired. It's very weak. We've always called it the "bubble jammer," because it makes a strange "bubbly" type sound. But the Radio Marti transmissions are easily heard and understood over the weak Cuban jamming attempt.

    • @ArnieDXer
      @ArnieDXer 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I believe these Cuban jammers are designed for groundwave or NVIS coverage rather than skywave, which would make sense for such a relatively small country Cuba is. From afar, in Europe, it is easier to pick up Radio Marti, but it doesn't mean you can't hear the jammers' roar.
      BTW Radio Marti is part of the same US Government organisation as RFE/Radio Libertyn and Radio Free Asia. I've never considered these stations "clandestine" though.
