Gerry was a very special friend for Simon Gietl. A friend with whom he could talk about everything, but at the same time someone who was not afraid of silence. With Gerry it was a pleasure for Simon to make long term plans, pledges and promises: like opening a new route on a specific line they saw together.
Gerry had a climbing accident during an expedition in Nepal, and never came back from the Nilgiri. Simon grieved his friend and found a way to honor him: “After what happened to Gerry it was very clear to me that I would not do the route on Cima Scotoni, because for me it was unthinkable to open it with someone else. But then I thought there might be another way to honor our pact: to open the route solo, bringing Gerry with me, in my heart. That’s how I went to Cima Scotoni”.

"Feel strong, but not immortal" comes at 7:54 and describes with a few words the essence of climbing driven by such extreme passion. Although extraordinary mountaineers like Gerry and Simon are aware their lives can be swept away by unpredictable accidents, they stick to their plans and are able to train for years just to reach a single goal. That is the key learning we can derive from their thrilling ascents. We are all still risking our life every day even if we have ordinary habits, then we should make it worth, we should make the most out of our talents before it will be too late.
